Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Morning Prelude

New York was shrouded in morning mist, with vehicles forming long queues at red lights on the wide streets.

Inside a blue Chevrolet Corvette C8 sports car, Wade slumped in the passenger seat, nodding off to the rhythm of the car music.

"Heh heh..." The petite and exquisite Jill held the steering wheel, letting out a smug chuckle, "Who would have thought, who would have thought? Our famous Cyclone is actually an 'unlicensed person' without even a driver's license."

"Is it necessary? No matter how fast you drive this sports car, can it be faster than me flying?" Wade slurped the drool that was about to drip and refuted vaguely, "I could fly you directly to the Metropolitan Stadium; it would only take a few minutes."

"That's no fun! Today you're mine, so you have to follow the rules." Jill reached under the seat and grabbed two popsicles emitting wisps of cold air out of thin air, "Here, my treat. Hurry and taste how they are."

"Treating me to ice so early in the morning?" Wade grumbled as he stuffed it into his mouth, taking a few big bites and tasting the dense slush, "Hmm?! A strawberry-pineapple mix?"

"Hee hee... I ate a lot of fruit last night!"

"It's a waste of your ability not to open an ice cream shop. Do you have chocolate flavor?"

"In your dreams." Jill rolled her eyes at him, "Production can't keep up. At most, I can only make a few dozen milliliters, and it has to be... under specific circumstances."

Wade's eyes widened upon hearing this, and he stopped chewing: "Wait, this thing... where did you pull it out from?"

Jill stepped on the gas, raising an eyebrow with a wicked smile: "Ohoho... didn't you enjoy eating it last time?"

"You're making me eat this damn thing? No wonder it tasted a bit sour!" Wade froze in place, his throat gulping several times.

Seeing his stunned expression, Jill slapped the storage compartment under the seat hard: "Hahaha, just kidding! I have a mini-fridge in the car!"

The two bantered all the way, and the car was filled with a cheerful atmosphere.

The blue sports car drove through the suburbs and merged into the increasingly dense traffic of the city center.

Half an hour later, at the Metropolitan Stadium, the magnificent curved dome of the venue came into view, with crowds of people converging from all directions.

On a huge billboard, the words "Speedster Peak Showdown" were displayed prominently above the white man in orange, 'A-Train', and the black man in blue, 'A-Train', making it exceptionally eye-catching.

Wade put on his Godolkin University volunteer badge and, together with Jill, followed the support team organized by the Sisterhood Society, entering through the dedicated channel in an orderly manner.

Their task was not easy; they not only had to set up their school's promotional camp in the designated area but also had to follow the instructions of Vought Corporation staff to help set up the main venue.

On the first floor of the inner field, Wade lifted two heavy long tables by himself and whispered: "I said the race doesn't start until 10:30, so why did they drag us here to sign in at 7:00? It turns out they're using us as free labor?"

"Be content. You get credits and free group photos and signed posters of The Seven." Beside him, Jade shouldered a long string of stools and curled his lip, "But you, not bad, quietly getting my cousin... I was wondering why she refused to let me hitch a ticket this time no matter what."

"It's a long story. I asked her for a favor last time, and I'm here to repay the debt." Wade dodged the question and quickly changed the subject, "Back to business, do you think A-Train can win this time? He's in his thirties, right?"

"He must." At the mention of his idol, Jade immediately perked up, his face full of admiration, "A-Train is the GOAT of our Speedster world! The greatest of all time... the records for 400 meters and 340 meters per second have remained unbroken! Why else would I spend money to buy a slot just to watch the race?"

Wade looked at the life-sized standee of "A-Train" in an orange skin-tight suit that had just been placed nearby: "Hard to say. A-Train is only in his early twenties, with limitless youth, better physical quality, and more drive."

"Yo! You're quite stubborn, aren't you? Dare to make a bet?" Hearing this, Jade immediately got excited, "Let's bet a hundred thousand, how about it? Don't cry poverty to me; you've made plenty of commissions from the bookies in those arena matches you fought at school, haven't you?"

"Am I that kind of person?" Wade set the table and slapped the dust off his hands, saying casually, "How about this, if I lose, I'll pay you double, one to two odds. Sound fair?"

Jade's eyes lit up, and he rubbed his hands excitedly: "Ho ho ho... giving your brother a welfare check, are you? I'm in!"

Just then, a person in a Vought uniform holding a walkie-talkie ran over hurriedly and shouted at them: "I need a few people. The backstage needs help moving some items provided by sponsors to the dressing rooms."

Jade poked Wade's shoulder with his hand: "Here's the chance. Quick, let's go!"

Before Wade could react, Jade pulled his arm and followed several other selected volunteers toward the backstage passage.

Passing through the door where security personnel stood, the backstage scene was completely different from the public area.

In various areas of the dressing rooms, the lighting was distinct, and the air was filled with the smell of cosmetics, hairspray, and perfume.

People were coming and going, staff in various uniforms were walking hurriedly, and walkie-talkie instructions rose and fell.

Wade and Jade each pushed a cart full of energy drinks and snacks, following the instructions through the corridor.

Passing a door left ajar, Wade glimpsed Starlight inside with her head lowered, letting a makeup artist apply something to her face.

She was wearing a V-neck low-cut battle suit and was frequently shifting her body, looking very uncomfortable.

The door to the next room was wide open, and Queen Maeve could be seen standing and putting on her armor, letting a stylist arrange her hair while she focused on murmuring from a teleprompter card.

"Look over there!" Jade lowered his voice and pointed to the entrance of the most spacious lounge area at the end of the corridor.

Many people were gathered there, and A-Train, wearing his blue uniform, had just arrived.

A training team of black men in blue surrounded him, some handing him water, others helping him relax his neck and shoulders, like stars surrounding the moon.

"Just leave the stuff here!" Someone who looked like an assistant directed Wade and the others, pointing outside the lounge area.

Just as they put down the supplies and were about to leave, Jade plucked up his courage and pulled Wade over.

"A-Train! We are volunteers from Godolkin University and also your loyal fans!" He shouted softly toward A-Train, who was surrounded by his team, "May we... may we take a photo with you?"

Hearing the voice, A-Train turned his head, a professional toothy grin appearing on his face, and waved his hand: "Of course, kids. Make it quick."

Jade excitedly stuffed his phone into the hands of a nearby staff member and pulled Wade to stand beside A-Train.

Wade could clearly smell the scent of sweat mixed with sports spray coming from A-Train.

The photo was frozen in time.

In the picture, A-Train stood behind the two of them with a smile; Jade struck A-Train's signature bow-and-arrow pose, smiling like a kid who had successfully met his idol; Wade smiled brightly and made a peace sign.

"Thank you! I wish you a victorious race today!" Jade shook A-Train's hand and bowed repeatedly in thanks.

Wade shook the other hand and said with a sincere gaze: "No matter the result, you are our idol!"

A-Train pulled his hand away, patted their shoulders, and encouraged: "Kids, work hard in school, strive to be number one on the campus rankings... just like I was back then, and you can become superheroes in the future too!"

"Goodbye, we'll be cheering for you later!" Wade and the other two stepped aside and waved goodbye.

"You're welcome, thanks for your support." A-Train nodded in response and returned to his training team.

A weak airflow rose in Wade's palm, forming an invisible barrier that refined a few beads of sweat.

He pulled a thumb-sized glass bottle from his pocket and transferred the sweat beads into it.

'Sweat contains pheromones... He moves too fast; if I want to find where the compound v is hidden, I can only rely on this!'
