Hannah looked up from her phone. "Josie found the Plants' and Noah's schoolbooks, but she's not sure what to do about Zeke."
"What's the problem?" Betty asked.
"He can read," Hannah said, "but Engrada doesn't use the same alphabet we do."
"Have you asked Noelle?" Betty asked.
"Not yet." Hannah tapped her screen. "I'll tell Josie to ask her."
"Does it matter right now?" Randy asked. "What about CDs or audiobooks?"
"They'd help," Hannah said, "but if anyone tests him, they're going to wonder why a fifth grader can't read."
"And if he writes in Engradian, good luck explaining that to someone who thinks everyone in America should speak English," Betty added.
"Customers mouth off to you?" Randy asked.
"Some people think anyone waiting on them is a peasant," Betty said.
"And they're not any kinder to children who don't speak English," Hannah said.
"Zeke speaks English," Randy said.
