After doing a little research and thinking over how to answer such a question if she were asked, Ash decided to just tell Laura and the others that she was not allowed to show her face to anyone outside of her family.
With her being alone without any family in her life anymore, she would not be able to show her face to others.
With her already telling them that she came from a family line that continues to live the lifestyle of a drifter or nomad, who were very set in the old ways, her answer seemed to work quite well.
Her present appearance may have been quite modern in many ways, but it would still give off the impression of someone in those circumstances who would have had to adjust to the changing times while trying to carry on those traditions and beliefs.
There were modern influences from the clothing she was wearing, but there were parts that would have been added to so that it could still work for anyone living like that.
