"Are you sure you want to do this?" Luke stopped the car, the desert making everything seem hotter. "We can still leave."
"No, but I have to," I hated leaving Nefra for so long, but I can't avoid this. "It's not like we'll take that long."
"Are you sure about that?" Luke's not convinced. He'd never approved of my relationship with Jessica, but he hadn't stopped me either. "There's a lot of history to unpack."
"Yeah, but I'm not here for that," and I wasn't. This was about getting that ring back and making it clear where I stood, nothing more. "Besides, Nefra knows I'm here. I don't want her to get worried."
"Yeah, stupid of you to think you could hide it," he laughed, getting out.
An enormous wolf with shaved fur trotted out from behind the trees, sitting in front of the car.
"Hey Carlos!" Luke greeted, scratching behind his ear. "Anything interesting going on?"
Carlos's eyes grow glassy, and Luke laughs at the silent response.
