"Can you cook?"
"Um… I can bake."
"Can you sweep and mop?"
"Yes, I can do that."
"And why do you want to become a maid here anyway?"
Julia gulped, her throat suddenly dry as sand. She cleared it quickly, forcing a polite smile onto her face.
She had expected this to be easy. Slip in, say a few convincing words, and blend into the background like smoke. But this woman standing before her, clearly the head maid, had been firing questions at her like arrows from a well-trained archer.
Relentless, sharp and very hard to dodge.
Well… she should have expected it. This was the royal palace, after all, were not about to hire just anyone off the street.
"I really need the money, ma'am," Julia replied, lowering her gaze just enough to sell the lie. "And with the royal wedding around the corner… I thought you might need extra hands."
The plump woman raised a brow, her eyes scanning Julia from head to toe with unsettling precision.
