Chapter 23 - Twenty three

I have never been to Devan's office before.

I knew of it, of course. He had mentioned it in passing long days, high-pressure meetings, numbers and negotiations that seemed to follow him even after he got home. I know he was the Vice President at Apex Tax and Finance. I know his job wasn't something you simply called in sick from without consequences.

But knowing that and seeing it were two different things.

The building itself is imposing. Glass and steel stretch upward, reflecting the city in sharp, polished angles. It looks like a place where people don't falter. Where weakness isn't tolerated.

My chest tightens as I step out of the taxi.

I push through the revolving doors and into the cool, controlled environment of the lobby. Everything inside is pristine. Quiet footsteps on polished floors, low conversations, the faint hum of air conditioning.

At the front desk, a woman with sleek hair and a sharp suit looked up.

"Yes ma'am. How many I help you?" she asks politely.
