**Captain James Nolan's Log, Supplemental**
**USS Discovery – Ready Room**
**USS Discovery Command recording**
**40 days after Rothgard's Fall**
The stars align for war.
A trap is set in steel and fire.
The black tide will break.
The ready room aboard Discovery was bathed in the soft, cold blue glow of the holo-table. Captain James Nolan stood at the head of the long table, arms crossed, his silhouette sharp against the shifting tactical map. Beside him, A.L.I.'s avatar stood perfectly still, her black-and-gold uniform immaculate, green eyes reflecting the flickering data streams.
Across the synchronized quantum link, two life-sized holographic figures stood as if they were physically present in the same room. Captain Marcus Hale and Captain Aric Vaelor occupied identical positions around a matching holo-table in the Forward Operating Base command center. Every satellite feed, every thermal signature, every supply route, and every piece of gathered intelligence appeared identically on both ends of the connection. The full weight of the Imperial presence in Albion stretched across the displays like a spreading shadow.
Nolan broke the silence. "We can't keep bleeding them like this. Every day we trade casualties and hold the line, they reinforce. We're winning battles but losing the war of attrition. We need to break their fortified positions decisively." Vaelor leaned forward, the holographic projection so sharp that the faint scar along his jaw was visible. "The Imperials are invaders. They do not know this land. Those battlements you see were thrown up in desperation after your ship turned back their sea reinforcements. They are not ancient fortresses — they are recent constructions, built in haste and held together by fear and magic. Their mages and commanders are fighting on unfamiliar ground. That is our advantage."
Hale's holographic form nodded grimly. "They keep pulling back and re-forming behind the next line of defenses. It's like fighting smoke. We need to force them into a fight they cannot retreat from." A.L.I. tilted her head slightly, the faint cascade of light-blue code flickering across her green corneas as she processed the live data streams. "Analysis of satellite imagery confirms the pattern. Imperial forces are rotating reserves efficiently along internal supply corridors. Any single-axis push is quickly met with layered counterattacks."
Nolan studied the map in silence for a long moment. Several options were proposed and discarded — orbital strikes risked civilian populations still trapped behind the lines, while a prolonged siege would only give the Imperials time to bring up more dragons and heavier reinforcements from the south. Then Nolan spoke again, his voice low but decisive. "What if we stop trying to push them back… and instead let them come to us?"
Vaelor raised an eyebrow. "Explain." Nolan zoomed the display in on the western sector. The map responded instantly, highlighting the current line in blue and the Imperial positions in crimson. "We split 1st Company and the Albion forces into two elements — Alpha on the east flank, Charlie on the west. We create a deliberate gap in the center and allow the Imperials to believe they've found a weakness. When they push north into that gap in force, we close the jaws."
He pointed to the southern vector on the map. "Delta — Discovery's Marines and every available Delta team — strikes hard from the south, cutting off their retreat and hammering their rear. At the same moment, Alpha and Charlie collapse inward from the flanks. Full Switchblade and Jackal support overhead to suppress their mages and command elements."
Hale's holographic form straightened, eyes narrowing as he studied the proposed maneuver. "A classic pincer… but inverted. We become the anvil, and the Imperials become the hammer that breaks itself." Vaelor studied the projected movements for a long moment, then gave a slow, thoughtful nod. "It is risky. But it plays to our strengths. If we can draw them deep enough into the gap before we spring the trap…" He traced a line across the map with his finger. "Their own momentum becomes their downfall," A.L.I. spoke, her voice calm and precise.
"Simulations indicate a seventy-eight percent probability of success if the timing is executed within a four-minute window. Satellite coverage will provide real-time adjustments. The Jackal gunships and Switchblade fighters can maintain continuous suppression on the flanks while Delta executes the southern hammer strike." Nolan looked at each man in turn — Hale in the FOB, Vaelor standing beside him, and A.L.I. at his side. The weight of the decision settled over the room like a physical presence.
"We break the cycle here. No more trading lives for inches of ground. We end this push." Hale gave a sharp nod. "Alpha and Charlie will be ready by dawn. We'll coordinate the gap with the Albion commanders." Vaelor's expression was grim but resolute. "I will ensure the Four Kingdoms forces understand the plan. They will hold their positions until the signal." Nolan straightened, his decision made.
"Operation Hammer and Anvil begins at first light. Full Switchblade and Jackal support authorized. Delta elements will insert under cover of darkness. Let's make them regret ever setting foot on this continent." The holo-tables flickered as the synchronized feeds updated with new operational markers. For the first time in weeks, the black tide on the map looked less like an unstoppable force and more like prey walking into a trap.
