Chapter 171 - Chapter 136: A Warrior's Challenge

**Kitsune Vulpine's Log, Supplemental**

**Discovery recording**

**37 days after Rothgard's Fall**

Flame calls to flame in the dark between worlds.

The heavy shuttle bay deck hummed with the deep, steady pulse of the starship's fusion reactors. Kitsune Vulpine stood among the awed delegations, her nine tails swaying slowly as she took in the vast, cavernous space. The air carried a faint metallic tang mixed with the clean scent of recycled oxygen and warm machinery. Overhead, massive cranes and harness systems hung in perfect order, their precision speaking of engineering far beyond anything her people had ever forged. The sheer scale pressed against her senses, a living testament to power held in check. For a moment, her usual courtly poise slipped, replaced by genuine wonder as she traced the lines of the bay doors now sealed beneath the captured CHS-130.

Then her gaze caught on a cluster of figures near the far bulkhead. Sergeant Elias Vargas stood among a handful of other Delta operators, all in matte-black powered armor, visors up as they talked quietly while watching the new arrivals. "Elias," she called out, the word rolling from her tongue in a low, velvety purr that carried across the bay. Without waiting for a reply, Kitsune crossed the deck with fluid, deliberate grace, her hips swaying just enough to draw every eye. Her nine tails flicked behind her in a slow, teasing rhythm, and the flirtatious smile curving her lips promised both challenge and invitation.

Vargas's head snapped up, surprise flashing across his face. His companions fell silent, exchanging quick glances. He looked instinctively toward Captain Nolan, who was finishing a brief welcome speech in the background. Nolan caught the exchange and smirked, raising his voice just enough to carry. "As long as you show up clean and sober, Sergeant. Just don't break her heart—if she doesn't kill you first, it'll be a diplomatic incident." He laughed openly as he turned to lead the delegations deeper into the ship.

Vargas stood there looking distinctly awkward, one hand rubbing the back of his neck while his teammates grinned at his expense. Kitsune stopped just within arm's reach, her golden-orange eyes sparkling with mischief. "Sergeant Elias Vargas," she purred, voice warm and intimate, "I believe we have unfinished business. After these talks conclude, I would very much like your number—and another spar. This time without the audience, perhaps." Vargas cleared his throat, clearly caught off guard. "Ma'am… I mean, Grand Mage. I'd be honored. Just… let me know when."

Kitsune's smile widened, satisfied. She turned away with a final flick of her tails, rejoining the group as Nolan led them out of the hangar and into the ship's corridors. The delegations moved through Discovery in a state of collective awe. Wide, brightly lit passageways stretched ahead, lined with smooth composite walls that hummed faintly with power. Durin Fireforge kept stopping to press his palm against bulkheads, murmuring about the invisible energies flowing within. Grim Stonefist walked with his head on a swivel, grumbling about the lack of visible bracing yet clearly impressed by the seamless construction. Lord Alister Greymoor maintained a dignified silence, though his eyes betrayed the same stunned wonder. Kitsune walked beside Brynna, the two exchanging quiet comments about the impossible scale of it all.

They reached the command center conference room—a spacious chamber dominated by a large curved screen and a central holographic table. The delegations took their seats, the air thick with anticipation. Nolan stood at the head of the table, A.L.I. at his side, and the screen behind him flickered to life with crisp images of Discovery's journey. Nolan began without preamble, his voice steady and measured. "Construction of this vessel began a year before its christening in 2126 in our timeline. Humanity on our Earth built Discovery as part of a fleet meant to travel between the stars. It uses advanced engines that manipulate gravity itself to create a kind of shortcut through space, allowing us to cross vast distances in days rather than centuries."

The screen showed archival footage of the ship under construction in orbit, then the christening ceremony with crowds and flags, followed by the vessel accelerating away from its home planet. "Five days after launch, someone sabotaged the gravimetric drive—the system that bends space around the ship. The failure tore open an uncontrolled rift in spacetime. That rift pulled us through and deposited us here, in the outer reaches of your star system. We arrived damaged, drifting, and completely lost."

Images appeared of the ship tumbling through darkness, emergency lights flashing, crew scrambling to repair ruptured conduits and stabilize failing systems. "We spent weeks making emergency repairs, studying the local space, and planning our next move. Once we understood where we were, we descended to the surface in the place we call Shire Valley. That is how we came to be here." The screen showed the long, fiery descent through the atmosphere, the first landing, and people stepping out onto green grass for the first time in this new world.

Nolan paused, letting the pictures speak. "We did not choose to come here. But we are here now. And we want to talk with you about how our two peoples might help each other survive what is coming." The delegations watched in rapt silence, the simple yet precise words and moving pictures painting a story far larger than any legend they had ever heard.
