Chapter 165 - Chapter 130: Stone and Alliance

**35 days after Rothgard's Fall**

Hammers pause. Alliances are set in stone.

King Dain Granitehelm sat behind the heavy oak desk of his private study, the fire in the great hearth crackling steadily against the mountain chill that always seeped through the ancient stone walls. Ledgers, treaties, and supply tallies lay spread before him in orderly stacks, illuminated by the warm glow of rune-lamps. His broad shoulders were hunched slightly over the latest manifest from the eastern mines, a quill held firmly in his callused hand as he scratched careful notes in the margins. Across from him, his chief assistant Thrain Forgehammer reviewed the same documents with the quiet, methodical efficiency of decades in service, occasionally muttering corrections under his breath.

Flanking the table stood two senior court advisors. Elder Gloin Deepvein, the grizzled commander of the Deep Guard, leaned back in his chair with arms crossed, his scarred face set in its usual scowl of practiced suspicion. Beside him, Lady Brynna Stonevein tapped a finger on the table, her sharp eyes scanning every line with the pragmatic focus of someone who had negotiated trade pacts across half the Western Continent.

The heavy oak door opened with a low groan. A guard in full plate stepped aside to admit a breathless messenger, the young dwarf's beard still dusted with road grit from the long ride up the mountain pass. "Your Majesty," the messenger said, bowing low before offering a sealed scroll. "From the Albion Diplomatic Delegation. Marked urgent." King Dain set his quill aside and broke the wax seal with a thick thumb. He unrolled the parchment and read aloud, his deep voice rumbling through the chamber like distant thunder.

"'To His Majesty King Dain Granitehelm of Helmsland, from the Albion Diplomatic Delegation under Grand Mage Kitsune Vulpine. The Kingdom of Albion extends a formal invitation to join preliminary alliance talks with the newly arrived Americans of the starship Discovery. Their colony lies in the unclaimed valley adjacent to your eastern border. We believe joint discussion on mutual defense, resource sharing, and the growing threat from Imperia would serve both our peoples. A favorable reply is respectfully requested.' "

Silence settled for a moment, broken only by the hearth fire. Thrain Forgehammer leaned forward, brow furrowed. "The Americans again. The same ones who turned the tide at Blackthorn Harbor with those mysterious strikes from the sky. We still do not know what manner of spell or weapon they used to fell the greater dragons in a single blow."

Elder Gloin Deepvein crossed his thick arms, his voice a low growl. "We watched their sky-weapons from the eastern passes. One strike, one greater dragon gone. If they can do that, they are no ordinary outsiders. But inviting us to the table so soon? This could be a trap to pull Helmsland into Albion's war before we are ready."

Lady Brynna Stonevein tapped a finger on the table, her eyes sharp. "Or an opportunity. The Black Spine has always been our natural border with the valley on its western slopes. Our territory extends north along those slopes and partially into the western plains beyond. Albion lies on the eastern slopes, stretching to the east coast and south into the fertile plains. Shire Valley sits directly between us. A formal treaty could secure the passes, guarantee mana-stone trade, and give us leverage over the new arrivals before they grow too strong."

King Dain leaned back, stroking his iron-gray beard as the advisors debated. He listened without interruption, weighing every word. The firelight danced across the ancient runes carved into the stone walls—reminders of oaths sworn by his ancestors. Helmsland had stood alone for generations, its halls carved deep into the mountain, its people proud and self-reliant. Yet the reports from the east painted a grim picture: the Imperia's second wave already crossing the ocean, Albion bleeding, and now these star-fallen Americans building a colony on their very doorstep.

Thrain spoke again, more cautiously. "We have no quarrel with these Americans yet. Their sky-weapons are strange, but their actions at Blackthorn suggest they value honor. If we refuse, we risk standing alone when the black fleet reaches our western plains." Gloin grunted. "And if we accept, we risk entanglement in Albion's politics. The Four Kingdoms have their own games. We are not pawns."

Lady Brynna countered smoothly. "Then we do not go as pawns. We go as equals. Send our own delegation—myself, a senior runemaster, and a contingent of the Deep Guard. Demand clear borders, shared intelligence on the Imperia, and priority access to their defensive technology. The valley is unclaimed. We can secure it as a buffer."

King Dain raised a hand, and the room fell silent. He stared into the fire for a long moment, the weight of the crown heavy on his brow. Finally, he spoke, voice steady and final. "We will answer favorably. Helmsland will join the talks. Prepare a delegation—Lady Brynna will lead, with Runemaster Durin Fireforge and Captain Grim Stonefist of the Deep Guard. We will not rush into war, but neither will we sit idle while the black tide rises. The mountain stands firm, but even stone needs allies when the storm comes."

The advisors nodded, the decision settling like an anvil on the table. Thrain immediately began drafting the reply scroll, while Gloin and Brynna discussed the composition of the escort. King Dain watched the fire, his mind already turning to the larger map of the Western Continent that hung on the far wall. The Americans had brought fire from the sky. Now the dwarves would bring the unyielding strength of stone. Outside the study, the mountain wind whispered through the high passes, carrying the distant echo of hammers from the forges below. The king's decision had been made. The alliance was no longer Albion's alone.
