Chapter 118 - The Weight of One Step

Feroz stood motionless.

The first lantern continued to burn.

Its golden light spread gently across the ancient road, revealing only a few more steps before the darkness swallowed everything again.

Behind him...

the shadow figures remained silent.

He did not need to turn around.

He could feel them.

Waiting.

Watching.

Following.

For several moments, nothing changed.

Then...

another lantern flickered to life farther ahead.

The road had responded.

Not to his strength.

Not to his power.

To his decision.

Feroz slowly looked toward Suleiman.

The old man remained at the edge of the road.

His hands rested calmly behind his back.

He had not moved since Feroz stepped onto the Path of Followers.

"You aren't coming?"

Suleiman smiled.

"I already walked my road."

"This one belongs to you."

Feroz looked ahead again.

"So I'm alone."

"No."

Suleiman answered softly.

"You only feel alone."

The words lingered inside Feroz's mind.

For years...

he had believed those two things meant the same.

Perhaps they never had.

He took another step.

The sound echoed through the silent road.

Click.

A second statue lowered its head.

Not much.

Only enough to acknowledge his movement.

The shadow figures behind him also stepped forward.

Perfectly together.

Feroz frowned.

"They don't hesitate."

"They cannot."

Suleiman replied.

"They chose to follow."

Feroz slowly looked over his shoulder.

The figures were still impossible to recognize.

Each one was wrapped in darkness.

No faces.

No voices.

Only outlines.

How many were there?

Ten?

Twenty?

More?

He could not tell.

Every time he tried counting them...

his attention drifted away.

Almost as if the road itself refused to let him know.

He turned back.

"Who are they?"

Suleiman remained silent.

Feroz almost repeated the question.

Instead...

he remembered another lesson.

Sometimes...

the Path answered through experience instead of words.

He continued walking.

The statues watched him.

Some looked young.

Others appeared ancient.

Kings.

Scholars.

Warriors.

Ordinary people.

None wore crowns.

None looked greater than the others.

Only different.

After several minutes...

Feroz noticed something unusual.

Every statue faced the same direction.

Forward.

None looked behind.

He slowed his pace.

"Suleiman."

"Yes?"

"Why aren't any of them looking back?"

The old man smiled.

"Because a guide may remember where he came from..."

"...but he cannot lead by walking backward."

Feroz quietly repeated those words inside his mind.

He continued walking.

Another lantern awakened.

Then another.

Each one lit only after he moved.

Never before.

Never without him.

The road refused to reveal more than his next few steps.

It reminded him of life itself.

No one could see the entire journey.

Only the next choice.

A soft wind suddenly crossed the road.

The air carried whispers.

Too quiet to understand.

Feroz stopped.

The whispers disappeared.

He walked again.

They returned.

He listened carefully.

At first...

they sounded meaningless.

Then...

he recognized a single word.

"...help..."

Another whisper followed.

"...wait..."

Then another.

"...don't..."

His heartbeat slowed.

The voices were different.

Men.

Women.

Children.

Old people.

Each whisper came from a different direction.

He looked toward Suleiman.

"Do you hear them?"

"No."

"You don't?"

"They are not speaking to me."

Feroz listened again.

The whispers became clearer.

Some sounded frightened.

Others hopeful.

Some angry.

Some filled with grief.

None finished their sentences.

Each voice vanished before another appeared.

"What are they?"

Suleiman answered without hesitation.

"Possibilities."

Feroz frowned.

"Possibilities?"

"The people whose lives your choices may touch."

Feroz stared ahead.

"My choices?"

"They have not met you yet."

"They may never know your name."

"But your decisions can still reach them."

A strange heaviness settled inside his chest.

He had always thought leadership meant standing in front.

Now...

it felt like carrying invisible lives.

He took another step.

The whispers changed.

Some grew louder.

Others disappeared completely.

One child's laughter echoed briefly before fading away.

An old man began praying.

A woman cried.

Then...

silence.

Feroz looked back.

The shadow figures had not changed.

Still following.

Still silent.

Still keeping the same distance.

He finally asked the question that had been growing inside him.

"What happens if I leave this road?"

Suleiman looked directly into his eyes.

"They will follow."

"And if I choose the wrong direction?"

"They will follow."

"And if I stop walking forever?"

"They will wait."

Feroz lowered his head.

"So every choice becomes theirs."

Suleiman nodded.

"That..."

"...is the burden no sword can carry."

The road continued forward.

Endless.

Patient.

Feroz's thoughts drifted.

He remembered Haroon.

The old warrior had stood beside him when others would have walked away.

He remembered Yusuf.

The mysterious guardian had risked everything to keep him alive.

He remembered Mrs. Aliya.

The woman who had raised him with nothing but kindness, even when she had little to give.

Then...

he remembered his father.

Qadir's final smile before disappearing into the rain.

None of them had followed him because he had commanded them.

They had chosen to stand beside him.

Just as these silent figures had chosen to follow the First Guardian.

A painful realization slowly formed.

Perhaps...

people had been following him long before he noticed.

He simply never understood the responsibility.

Another lantern awakened.

Its light revealed something new.

Footprints.

Hundreds of them.

Old footprints.

Some were large.

Some belonged to children.

Some stopped halfway across the road.

Others continued into the darkness.

Feroz knelt beside one of them.

"They're real."

"Yes."

"Whose are they?"

Suleiman walked closer than before.

Still...

he did not step onto the road.

"Those who walked before you."

Feroz gently touched one footprint.

It was warm.

As though someone had stepped there only moments ago.

"Did they finish the journey?"

Suleiman remained quiet.

Finally...

he answered.

"Some did."

"And the others?"

"They stopped believing their footsteps mattered."

Feroz stared at the endless trail.

The footprints did not disappear.

Every person who walked this road had left something behind.

Not power.

Not treasure.

A direction.

A path for someone else.

Feroz slowly stood.

He looked once more at the shadow figures.

Then at the footprints stretching into the darkness.

For the first time...

he understood why the Learning Path had brought him here before granting him greater strength.

Power without responsibility...

created tyrants.

Responsibility before power...

created protectors.

Without speaking...

Feroz took another step.

Immediately...

the shadows followed.

Another lantern burst into golden light.

Far ahead...

beyond the reach of every lantern...

a massive silhouette slowly emerged from the darkness.

It did not move.

It simply waited.

From where he stood...

Feroz could only make out its outline.

It looked...

like another gate.

Or perhaps...

another question.
