Chapter 117 - The Road of Followers

The narrow stone road stretched into the darkness.

Neither side had walls.

Only endless emptiness.

The statues stood in perfect silence.

Dozens of them.

Perhaps hundreds.

Some wore robes.

Some carried staffs.

Others rested both hands upon the tops of weathered swords.

None of them looked alike.

Yet every face carried the same expression.

Not anger.

Not kindness.

Expectation.

Feroz remained where he was.

His breathing was calm.

But his heartbeat had begun to quicken.

Slowly...

he turned his head.

Every statue's eyes were open.

Watching him.

Not one blinked.

Not one moved.

Yet he could not escape the feeling that something had changed.

Behind him...

the shadows remained.

He did not look back.

Some instincts did not require proof.

He already knew they were still there.

Suleiman stood several steps away.

He did not walk onto the road.

Instead...

he waited.

As though an invisible line separated where he could stand...

from where Feroz had to continue alone.

For several moments...

neither of them spoke.

The silence itself felt like part of the lesson.

Finally...

Feroz broke it.

"They're waiting."

Suleiman nodded.

"They always are."

"For what?"

"For your next step."

Feroz looked ahead.

The road disappeared into darkness.

No destination.

No doorway.

No end.

Only stone stretching farther than he could see.

"It doesn't look like a path."

Suleiman smiled faintly.

"Most important roads never do."

Feroz took another slow breath.

His foot lifted.

Then stopped.

For the first time since entering the Learning Path...

hesitation held him still.

Not because he feared the road.

Because he feared making the wrong step.

Suleiman noticed.

"What changed?"

Feroz remained looking ahead.

"Before..."

"If I failed..."

"I paid the price."

His voice became quieter.

"But this place feels different."

Suleiman waited.

Feroz slowly looked over his shoulder.

He still could not see the shadows clearly.

Only dark figures standing behind him.

Silent.

Motionless.

Watching.

"It doesn't feel like only my choice anymore."

A gentle smile appeared on Suleiman's face.

"You are beginning to see."

Nothing more was said.

The words settled inside Feroz.

He looked forward once again.

Then...

carefully...

he placed one foot upon the road.

The moment his weight settled...

a quiet sound echoed through the darkness.

Click.

One of the statues lowered its head.

Only slightly.

Then became still again.

Feroz froze.

"I didn't touch it."

"No."

Suleiman answered.

"You touched the road."

Feroz frowned.

"They're connected?"

"They always have been."

He looked ahead.

Every statue remained motionless.

Yet something about them no longer felt lifeless.

They were listening.

He continued walking.

One step.

Then another.

Each footstep echoed farther than it should have.

The strange rhythm spread into the darkness.

Behind him...

another sound answered.

Footsteps.

Feroz stopped instantly.

The footsteps stopped too.

Slowly...

he turned.

The shadow figures had moved.

Not much.

Only enough to remain the same distance behind him.

His chest tightened.

"They're following me."

"They are."

"Who are they?"

Suleiman did not answer immediately.

Instead...

he asked a question.

"When you walked..."

"...what did they do?"

"They followed."

"And when you stopped?"

"They stopped."

Suleiman nodded.

"They are already teaching you."

Feroz looked between the shadows and the road.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

He looked back toward the statues.

"They do not create the lesson."

"You do."

The answer left Feroz unsatisfied.

But he had stopped expecting complete explanations.

Instead...

he began thinking.

If he walked...

they walked.

If he stopped...

they stopped.

His decision became theirs.

A cold realization slowly formed inside him.

Without another word...

he stepped backward.

Immediately...

the shadow figures stepped backward as well.

Exactly together.

Feroz stared.

He stepped to the left.

So did they.

To the right.

Again...

they followed perfectly.

His breathing became slower.

"They copy me."

Suleiman gently shook his head.

"No."

"They trust you."

Those words struck harder than any attack.

Trust.

How could shadows trust him?

He did not even know who they were.

He had never met them.

"They don't know me."

Suleiman's eyes remained calm.

"Must someone know you..."

"...before they follow you?"

Feroz opened his mouth.

No answer came.

Images surfaced inside his mind.

The orphanage.

Children following older children.

Haroon trusting him during impossible moments.

Sameer believing him when no one else did.

Haya refusing to abandon him.

Even Ayan...

who had guided him through the Village of Echoes.

Very few of them had truly known him.

Yet...

they had chosen to walk beside him.

The realization settled heavily inside his chest.

Suleiman slowly walked toward the edge of the road.

Still...

he did not step onto it.

"A leader rarely notices the first person who begins following."

"He notices only after many already have."

Feroz looked back at the shadows.

"There are too many."

"There always are."

"I didn't ask for this."

"No."

"You didn't."

Silence returned.

The golden light surrounding the statues seemed softer now.

Warmer.

Almost alive.

Suleiman's voice broke the quiet once more.

"Tell me, Feroz."

"If your next step leads toward darkness..."

"...where will they go?"

Feroz immediately answered.

"Into the darkness."

"And if your fear makes you stop?"

"They'll stop."

"If you choose revenge?"

"They'll learn revenge."

"If you choose mercy?"

"They'll learn mercy."

Each answer became heavier.

Until finally...

Feroz stopped speaking altogether.

He understood.

Not completely.

But enough.

The Road of Followers was never asking whether he was strong enough to lead.

It was asking whether he understood...

that someone would always become a reflection of the path he chose.

The statues remained silent.

The shadows remained behind him.

Neither judged him.

Neither praised him.

They simply waited.

As though the road itself refused to move...

until Feroz decided what kind of footsteps he wished to leave behind.

Far ahead...

hidden within the darkness...

something shifted.

A single stone lantern slowly lit itself.

Then another.

And another.

The road had not become shorter.

But for the first time...

it had begun to reveal where it wished him to walk.

Feroz looked into the distance.

Then quietly took another step forward.

This time...

the shadows followed without hesitation.
