Chapter 19: Girl & The Ghost ; Wendy's Rescue & Broken Seals
The Shadow of Memory
Deep within the subterranean chambers at Nirvana's base, ancient stone carvings pulsed with faint, unnatural luminescence. Wendy Marvell stood frozen before a stone sarcophagus, her hands trembling. Within lay Jellal Fernandes-motionless, peaceful, yet surrounded by a legacy of chaos.
"You owe this man your life," Brain urged, his voice smooth and toxic. "Without him, you would have perished long before Cait Shelter ever took you in."
"Don't listen to him, Wendy!" Happy shouted from his magical containment sphere nearby. "Jellal tried to sacrifice Erza! He fired Etherion! He's dangerous!"
Tears spilled down Wendy's cheeks as two conflicting truths collided in her mind: the memory of a kind boy who had guided her through the wilderness, and the terrifying monster who had nearly destroyed her friends.
"I have to know," Wendy whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the ruins. "I have to see who he really is."
With a soft gasp, she extended her hands over the sarcophagus. Radiant, pale-gold Sky Dragon magic poured from her palms, soaking into Jellal's quiet form and repairing the deep magical stasis that bound his soul.
Breach of the Inner Sanctum
Outside, a massive explosion shook the northern treeline as Natsu's roar echoed through the forest, drawing Cobra and Racer away from the cavern entrance.
Slipping past the weakened outer wards, Cumber and Sala moved like shadows, guided by Carla through winding tunnels of pre-historic masonry. They rounded the final descent and burst into the central chamber just as the golden light around the sarcophagus faded.
"That's enough!" Cumber roared, surging forward in a flash of blue Ki and placing himself squarely between Brain and the sarcophagus.
"Cumber!" Wendy cried, stepping back in shock.
Sala blurred to Wendy's side, pulling the young Dragon Slayer back while keeping her guard raised. "It ends here, Brain."
Brain only chuckled, gesturing toward the sarcophagus where Jellal was slowly sitting up, his eyes unfocused. "You are seconds too late. Though I suspect his lost memories may amuse you-stasis has wiped his mind clean."
"Who... am I?" Jellal murmured, staring blankly at his own hands.
"It matters little," Brain dismissed, his gaze locking onto Cumber. "He retains the innate signature needed to unlock Nirvana. Just as your brother Uruk served his purpose so obediently when I held his mind."
The deliberate mention of Uruk snapped something inside Cumber. His Ki erupted into a violent, crackling pressure wave. "Don't you dare mention my brother!"
Cumber launched himself at Brain, his Ki-infused fist tearing through the air. Brain barely raised his dark staff in time, the magical barrier deflecting the strike, though the shockwave blasted the dark wizard ten meters backward.
Shadows lengthened along the cavern walls as Midnight and Hoteye stepped from the side passages to reinforce their master. Simultaneously, Uruk emerged from a rear tunnel, pale and weary from treating the poisoned mages outside, but holding a firm combat stance to protect Wendy and Happy.
The Pillar of Decision
"Jellal," Brain commanded, recovering his balance. "Find the activation core. Your body remembers what your mind has forgotten."
As if hypnotized, Jellal stood up and began walking unsteadily toward an ancient archway leading deeper into the complex.
"Wendy, go!" Uruk urged, blocking a surge of dark magic from Brain. "You created the connection when you healed him-you're the only one who can reach his mind before he touches the core!"
Wendy nodded, her fear hardening into resolve as she darted after Jellal into the dark corridor.
Cumber tried to follow, but Midnight intercepted him, his Reflector Magic twisting space around Cumber's path and redirecting his Ki blasts back toward the cavern ceiling.
"You cannot hit what you cannot touch, Saiyan," Midnight purred softly, his crimson eyes gleaming with quiet boredom.
"I don't need to touch you to crush you," Cumber snarled. Drawing on deep reserves of anger and protectiveness, golden sparks began to arc wildly across his aura, the ambient pressure in the cavern skyrocketing.
In the inner chamber beyond, Jellal stood before a giant crystalline pillar where black and white energies swirled like a captive storm. His hand hovered inches from the activation rune.
"Jellal, please!" Wendy pleaded, running up behind him. "You don't have to do what Brain says! The Jellal I knew saved people!"
Jellal looked back at her, his expression torn with profound agony and confusion. "I feel... like I've committed terrible sins," he whispered, his hand trembling above the crystal. "Like I don't deserve to exist."
"Then choose to do good now," Wendy urged, reaching out her small hand toward his. "Don't let them use you again!"
Jellal's hand froze in mid-air, caught between the darkness calling to his instincts and the small voice of light standing right behind him.
The Shattered Core
Footsteps echoed violently through the narrow stone corridor as Cumber rushed into the inner chamber, his clothes torn from battle, his eyes blazing with protective fury. Brain stood near the glowing crystal, staff raised high as dark magic crackled along its tip.
"Touch the pillar, Jellal!" Brain barked, his voice filled with frantic authority. "Fulfill your destiny!"
"Don't touch it!" Cumber shouted, placing himself directly between Wendy and the dark wizard. "Whatever lies he fed you, it's nothing but poison!"
"Stay out of this, Saiyan pest!" Brain snarled, sweeping his staff forward. A beam of concentrated dark energy tore through the air straight toward Jellal and Wendy.
Before Cumber could form a full Ki shield, Wendy threw herself forward with surprising swiftness. She thrust her small hands out, a brilliant dome of pale-gold Sky Dragon magic erupting to intercept the beam. The two forces collided with a deafening sizzle, dark magic grinding against light. But the strain was too great; hairline fractures spiderwebbed across her golden barrier.
"Wendy, no!" Cumber lunged forward, grabbing her by the waist and diving aside just as the shield shattered.
The stray dark magic grazed Cumber's left shoulder, burning through his armor and flesh like liquid fire. He hit the ground hard, rolling to keep Wendy shielded beneath him. He gritted his teeth against the searing agony, his breathing ragged.
"Cumber! Your shoulder!" Wendy gasped, horror in her eyes.
"I'm fine... stay behind me," he growled, forcing himself back to his feet.
Brain chuckled darkly, stepping over the shattered stone. "How touching. But your interference changes nothing. If Jellal will not act willingly, I will force his hand!"
He raised his staff once more, but a sudden, blinding luminescence stopped him cold.
Jellal stood before the central pillar, his right palm pressed flat against its glowing, translucent surface.
"No!" Wendy cried out, fearing the worst.
Instead of the black-and-white spiral of Nirvana awakening, violent cracks burst across the crystal's surface. Pulses of volatile, unchecked magic poured from every fissure.
"What are you doing?!" Brain shrieked, horror instantly supplanting his triumph. "Stop!"
"What I should have done from the beginning," Jellal said, his hollow voice suddenly ringing with absolute clarity. "I am destroying Nirvana's core."
The structural foundation of the chamber groaned as the ancient magic destabilized. Boulders began raining down from the vaulted ceiling.
"The whole cavern is going down!" Cumber yelled, catching Wendy's hand. "We have to move!"
Brain roared in helpless fury, charging Jellal with his staff, but Cumber reacted instantly-sweeping his good arm around and firing a point-blank Ki blast that slammed Brain through the far wall.
"Jellal, move!" Cumber ordered. The blue-haired wizard nodded, following Cumber and Wendy as they sprinted through the collapsing passage toward the central cavern.
Awakening of the Destroyer
They burst back into the main cavern to find Sala standing victorious over an unconscious Hoteye, while Uruk had pinned Midnight against the wall using a lattice of Ki-reinforced binding chains. Happy and Carla were hovering nearby, attending to Uruk's minor wounds.
"The core is destroyed, but the whole ruin is collapsing!" Cumber called out over the rumbling earth. "We need to clear out right now!"
"Not so fast," a voice rasped from the dust-filled entrance.
Brain staggered back into the light, his robes shredded. But as they watched, the intricate magical tattoos across his face began to shift, liquefying and vanishing entirely into his skin. His hunched posture straightened, his sinister sneer replaced by a expression of cold, psychopathic detachment.
"You think you've won?" his voice echoed, strangely dual-toned and vibrating with terrifying mana. "You have merely unsealed something far worse."
Uruk's eyes widened as his analytical mind processed the shift. "His magic signature... it completely inverted. His baseline magical output just quadrupled!"
"I am Zero," the entity stated, his crimson aura flaring so violently that it cracked the floor beneath him. "Brain was weak-obsessed with controlling Nirvana. I have no such desire. I live only to reduce everything to ash!"
With terrifying speed, Zero thrust both hands forward, unleashing Dark Capriccio-a barrage of spiraling, needle-thin beams of dark magic that shredded the surrounding stone.
Cumber tackled Wendy behind a fallen pillar, taking the brunt of the flying debris.
"Cumber, hold still!" Wendy pleaded, grabbing his arm as he prepared to leap back into the fray.
"Wendy, there's no time-"
"There is!" She pressed her hands over his shattered, burned shoulder. Warm, soothing Sky Dragon magic surged into his flesh. Within seconds, the agonizing burn subsided, the muscle fibers stitching themselves back together.
Cumber looked down at her, feeling a deep wave of strength and mutual trust flow through the magic. "Thank you, Wendy. Stay with Happy and Carla."
The Delta Strike & The Final Atonement
Cumber vaulted over the pillar, taking his place beside Sala and Uruk.
"Standard Delta formation!" Cumber commanded. "Draw his fire and give me an opening!"
Without a second thought, Sala and Uruk moved in perfect sync. Sala flanked from the air, raining Ki strikes to force Zero's guard up, while Uruk darted across the ground, using precise Ki blades to sever Zero's dark magic conduits.
Zero sneered, turning to blast Uruk out of the air. "Insignificant insects!"
That brief moment of overconfidence was all Cumber needed. Drawing deep upon his ancestral bloodline and the renewed strength from Wendy's healing, golden Ki crackled violently around his fist. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, appearing directly inside Zero's guard.
"This is for Uruk... and for Wendy!" Cumber roared, driving his Ki-condensed fist straight through Zero's dark barrier and sinking it deep into his chest.
The shockwave blew the surrounding dust clear across the cavern. Zero's eyes bulged in utter disbelief as the golden energy detonated, launching him backward through fifty meters of solid bedrock. As his body crashed into the rubble, the dark aura vanished, and the tattoos slowly bled back onto his face-Brain returning, broken and unconscious.
"It's over," Uruk panted, wiping blood from his lip. "But the ceiling is giving way!"
Tremors shook the earth as massive stalactites plummeted from above. Cumber rushed back to grab Wendy, but stopped as he saw Jellal standing near the threshold of the crumbling inner sanctum.
"Jellal, come on!" Wendy yelled through her tears. "We have to go!"
Jellal turned back, offering her a faint, sorrowful smile. "Go ahead, Wendy. I must stay behind to ensure the residual magic in the core neutralizes completely... otherwise, the backflow will wipe out the entire forest."
"That's suicide!" Uruk warned. "You won't survive the collapse!"
"It is my choice," Jellal replied softly, his voice firm with newfound resolve. "A small price to pay to begin atoning for the darkness I brought into this world. Thank you, Wendy... for showing me that light still exists."
Before she could reach for him, Jellal turned and vanished into the falling debris of the inner chamber.
Cumber placed a gentle, firm hand on Wendy's shoulder as tears streamed down her face. "He made his choice, Wendy. We have to respect it."
Scooping her up, Cumber led the group as they raced through the rapidly collapsing exit tunnels, bursting out into the blinding sunlight of the Woodsea just as the entire subterranean cavern caved in behind them.
Outside, Natsu and Gray stood waiting, battered but victorious over Racer and Cobra. Together, the Allied Forces watched as the massive central spire of Nirvana groaned, buckled, and collapsed into dust, its dark presence completely purged from the world.
The Quiet Path Back
The journey back toward the temporary encampment was slow and quiet. Dust from Nirvana's collapse still settled over the Woodsea in a thin, pale haze, filtering the low sunlight into soft gold. Despite her pale face and trembling hands, Wendy insisted on walking on her own feet, her small shoulders set with a quiet resolve that belied her physical exhaustion.
Cumber matched her shorter stride, keeping his aura low and warm beside her-a steady, grounding presence against the lingering chill of dark magic in the forest air.
"I'm sorry," Wendy said softly, her voice barely carrying over the rustle of leaves beneath their boots. She kept her eyes fixed on the dirt path. "For healing Jellal... for making everything so much harder for everyone."
Cumber paused, looking down at her. "You don't need to apologize for having a heart, Wendy. You did what you believed was right based on who he was to you. And in the end... he made his own choice because of what you reminded him of."
Wendy looked up, her earnest brown eyes wide and shining with unshed tears. "Because of you, too, Cumber. You showed me what it means to stand firm when everything around you is falling apart."
A strange, unfamiliar warmth bloomed in Cumber's chest, cutting straight through the residual ache in his healed shoulder. He looked away briefly, rubbing the back of his neck with a rare, quiet sheepishness. "I think... we both learned a few things today."
A short distance ahead, Sala and Uruk walked side by side. Uruk caught his younger brother's eye and offered a subtle, approving nod, while Sala's lips curled into a faint, rare smile before both turned back to scout the trail ahead.
A New Definition of Power
When they reached the clearing, the heavy gloom of battle had finally lifted. Erza sat propped against a mossy boulder, her arm restored to its healthy tone thanks to Uruk's earlier Ki treatment, while Gray and Lucy were slowly regaining their footing nearby.
As Wendy immediately rushed over to check Erza's vitals-her small hands lighting up with the faint, remaining wisps of her healing magic-Cumber stood at the edge of the camp, watching her with a quiet realization taking root.
His journey in Earth-land had begun as a harsh, single-minded crusade: prove his strength, rescue his brother, and crush any obstacle in his path with overwhelming force. But watching the young Sky Dragon Slayer give every ounce of herself to protect and heal others, even after enduring terror and captivity, something fundamental shifted inside him.
Power isn't just about how hard you can strike, Cumber thought, his hand subtly brushing his unblemished shoulder. It's about having something-or someone-unshakable to protect.
In Wendy's brave, unyielding spirit, Cumber had caught a glimpse of a light that no dark magic or ancient seal could ever extinguish. And as his family gathered around the recovering coalition, he knew that whatever trials Earth-land threw at them next, he was no longer fighting merely out of vengeance, but to protect the bonds they were building step by step.
The Guild of Shadows and Silk
The journey through the Woodsea to Cait Shelter passed in companionable silence, the weight of the battle against the Oración Seis settling into a quiet rhythm of exhaustion and relief. Wendy walked beside Cumber, her short steps matching his grounded pace, occasionally casting glances up at the young Saiyan with unspoken gratitude.
When they crested the final ridge, the colorful, woven tents of Cait Shelter appeared nestled in the valley below.
"It looks just as I left it," Wendy murmured, a faint smile touching her lips before a shadow passed over her eyes. "Cait Shelter may be small, but it's been my home ever since..."
"He saved you in the end," Cumber said softly, knowing her thoughts had drifted to Jellal. "Whatever mistakes he made, he chose light when it counted."
Wendy looked up, her earnest brown eyes softening. "Thank you, Cumber. For being there when I needed someone to stand beside me."
Master Roubaul emerged from the central tent to greet them, his ancient face carved with deep lines of relief and quiet sorrow. "You have returned victorious," the Guild Master announced, his fragile voice carrying surprising authority. "Nirvana is neutralized, and the dark guild eliminated. You have done well, child."
After announcing a feast for the Allied Forces, Roubaul gestured for Wendy to follow him into his private tent. At the threshold, she turned back to Cumber. "Will you wait for me?"
"Of course," he replied without hesitation.
Inside, beneath the amber glow of lacrima lamps, Roubaul looked upon the young Sky Dragon Slayer with paternal affection. "You have grown beyond these walls, Wendy. Your path may lie past Cait Shelter now."
Wendy gasped softly. "What do you mean, Master?"
"I have seen the bond forming between you and your companions-especially the young Saiyan who protected you," Roubaul said gently. "Fairy Tail has offered you a place among them. You should accept."
"But Cait Shelter is my home! You're my family!"
"There are truths about this guild you do not yet know, child," Roubaul whispered softly, his eyes filled with lingering grief. "Truths that will soon light your way. Join the celebration tonight. By morning, your heart will know its choice."
Fires of the Allied Feast
Bonfires crackled across the central clearing as mages from Fairy Tail, Blue Pegasus, and Lamia Scale celebrated their hard-won victory. Cumber sat on a fallen log at the edge of the light, watching the chaos with a guarded expression.
Sala stepped up beside him, tossing him a piece of roasted meat. "You look deep in thought, little brother. That's usually Uruk's domain."
Across the clearing, Uruk was indeed deep in discussion with Hibiki, analyzing magical runes on a parchment.
"You've changed, Cumber," Sala noted, taking a drink. "A few weeks ago, your entire world was burned down to vengeance. Tonight, your eyes keep drifting toward a certain blue-haired Dragon Slayer."
Cumber's jaw tightened. "She was in danger. I protected her. That's all."
"Gentler. More open," Sala teased softly, her expression warming. "You've found someone worth protecting beyond just our family. That's real growth."
Before Cumber could grumble a response, Wendy emerged from Roubaul's tent, her face conflicted until her eyes met his. Sala smirked and smoothly took her leave, allowing Wendy to sit on the log beside Cumber.
"Master Roubaul thinks I should join Fairy Tail," Wendy confessed, watching the dancing flames. "What would you do?"
Cumber considered her question carefully. "I can't choose for you. But Fairy Tail protects their own. They fight for each other without second thoughts."
"Like you fought for me?" she asked softly.
"Yes," Cumber admitted, looking away.
Wendy's voice dropped, almost lost to the crackle of the fire. "If I joined Fairy Tail... would I still see you?"
The question caught Cumber off guard. "We haven't decided our next destination. With Brain defeated and Uruk recovered, our original hunt is over."
Disappointment flickered across her face, prompting Cumber to speak before his practical mind could stop him. "But... Fairy Tail has proven to be reliable allies. We have no reason to leave Fiore immediately."
A radiant smile broke across Wendy's face, lighting up the starlight above them.
Illusion of the Nirvit
As dawn painted the sky in shades of rose and gold, the assembly gathered at the center of the guild. Master Roubaul stood before them, his ethereal presence commanding absolute silence.
"You have made your decision, Wendy," Roubaul said gently. "You choose Fairy Tail."
"I do, Master," Wendy said, tears welling in her eyes. "But I will never forget Cait Shelter. It will always be my first home."
Roubaul offered a sad, peaceful smile. "About that, child... the time has come for the truth. Cait Shelter is not what it appears to be." He gestured toward the guild members standing behind him. "These people... this guild... they are not real."
Gasp ripples washed through Natsu, Lucy, and the others.
"I am the last surviving spirit of the Nirvit tribe," Roubaul explained as his body began to glow with translucent light. "Four hundred years ago, my people created Nirvana. Its dark backflow corrupted us, leading to our absolute ruin. I remained as a spirit to guard its seal."
Wendy's hands began to tremble violently. "Master... no..."
"When Grandeeney brought you to me years ago-a lost, crying child-I could not leave you alone," Roubaul continued softly. "So I wove an illusion. The tents, the people, the warmth... all magical projections engineered to give you a home until you were strong enough to find your true family."
As Roubaul spoke, the members of Cait Shelter smiled warmly at Wendy before dissolving into streams of golden dust. The grand tents shimmering like heat waves before vanishing, leaving behind only ancient, moss-covered ruins.
"No! Please don't go!" Wendy sobbed, falling to her knees as her world dissolved into ash.
Cumber knelt beside her instantly, his heavy hand resting gently on her trembling shoulder-a solid, unshakeable anchor in the void. "They aren't gone, Wendy," he said quietly. "What they gave you, what they taught you... that stays with you forever."
"He's right," Lucy murmured, crouching on her other side while Natsu and Erza stepped forward. "You have a real guild now. A real family."
Roubaul's shimmering spirit smiled one last time at the group. "Thank you, Wendy Marvell, for bringing light to an old ghost's final years. Go forward with my love."
With a final cascade of starlight, the last Nirvit faded into the morning air. On Wendy's shoulder, the crest of Cait Shelter slowly dissolved, leaving clear skin behind-a blank canvas for her future.
The Horizon to Magnolia
The journey to Magnolia was quiet at first, but the irrepressible spirit of Fairy Tail gradually eased the heavy gloom. By the second evening at camp, Wendy found Sala sitting near the supply crates.
"Are you... coming with us all the way to Magnolia?" Wendy asked hesitantly.
Sala smirked, casting a glance over to where Cumber sat methodically polishing his arm guards. "For now, yes. My own training can wait... given certain developments that require my direct big-sister supervision."
Wendy blinked, a soft blush dusting her cheeks as Cumber looked up and caught her eye.
By late afternoon of the following day, the bustling city of Magnolia sprawled beneath them in the sunlight, the distinctive, grand silhouette of the Fairy Tail guild hall rising proudly near the harbor.
"It's beautiful," Wendy breathed, standing at the crest of the hill.
"Wait till you see inside!" Natsu grinned. "It's the best place in Fiore!"
Cumber walked up beside Wendy, his tall frame blocking the cool sea breeze. "Are you nervous?"
"A little," she admitted, looking up at him. "It's strange to think I'm joining a real guild for the first time. What about you? Will you stay in Magnolia for a while?"
Cumber stared down at the lively city, his usual harsh demeanor replaced by a quiet, grounded resolve. "Sala thinks we should stay. And... I think there are still things here worth standing by."
A warm, radiant feeling bloomed in Wendy's chest as she stepped forward beside him. Together with the Saiyan siblings and Fairy Tail, she took her first step toward the guild doors thrown wide open to receive her.
