Chapter 29 - Tian trying to kiss

The evening air was cool as the city lights shimmered beyond the apartment window. Katie stood silently near the bookshelf, organizing a few papers she had brought home from work. The room was peaceful, filled only with the soft hum of the air conditioner.

Behind her, Tian watched quietly.

For days, he had been carrying emotions he couldn't put into words. The fear of losing her during the explosion. The sleepless nights in the hospital. The relief of seeing her open her eyes again.

Katie turned around and noticed his gaze.

"Tian?" she asked softly.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he took a step closer.

Then another.

Katie's heartbeat quickened.

"What are you doing?" she asked, confused by the unusual seriousness in his eyes.

Tian stopped only inches away from her.

The distance between them disappeared.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The memories of everything they had endured together flashed through his mind—the investigations, the danger, the tears, and the countless times she had stood beside him when the world seemed against him.

Without thinking, Tian reached for her hand.

Katie froze.

"Tian..."

His fingers tightened slightly.

His eyes were filled with emotions she had never seen before.

A mixture of gratitude.

Fear.

And something deeper.

Something he had hidden for a very long time.

"Katie," he whispered.

The sound of her name in his voice made her heart tremble.

Slowly, he leaned closer.

Katie's eyes widened.

"Tian—stop."

The words escaped her lips before she could think.

Not because she hated him.

Not because she didn't care.

But because everything was happening too suddenly.

Tian immediately stopped.

The realization hit him like cold water.

For several seconds, neither moved.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, Tian stepped back.

"I'm sorry."

His voice was barely audible.

Katie wanted to say something.

Anything.

But the words wouldn't come.

Tian looked away.

Then he turned and walked toward the door.

The soft click of it closing echoed through the apartment.

Katie remained standing in the middle of the room.

Alone.

Confused.

She slowly touched her chest.

Her heart was beating faster than ever.

Looking toward the closed door, she whispered to herself,

"...Why does this feel so heavy?"

Outside, Tian stood in the hallway.

His eyes closed.

Regret filled his heart.

Perhaps he had moved too quickly.

Perhaps he had almost ruined the most important relationship in his life.

The night stretched endlessly before both of them.

And for the first time since the case was solved, neither of them knew what would happen next.
