Chapter 224 - Earth and Heaven

Chapter 224 — Earth and Heaven

The argument began without a raised voice.

That was what made it dangerous.

Brook was walking across Asteria's eastern courtyard when he heard Tala.

"You shouldn't be here."

He stopped.

Gabriel stood several feet away from her.

The morning sun rested across the stone courtyard, catching on the edges of Gabriel's coat. He looked completely calm.

Tala did not.

She stood barefoot against the earth.

Her eyes were fixed on him.

Gabriel glanced at Brook.

Then back at Tala.

"I live here now."

Tala's expression hardened.

"For now."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"Apparently, that's a popular phrase around here."

Brook sighed.

"Oh, great."

He walked toward them.

Tala didn't look away from Gabriel.

"The Earth hasn't accepted you."

Gabriel's expression became more serious.

"I know."

"You say that as though you understand what it means."

"I don't."

"Then stop pretending."

Gabriel nodded.

"Fair."

Brook looked between them.

"What exactly is happening?"

Tala finally looked at him.

"Your friend from Heaven is standing on ground that doesn't recognize him."

Gabriel corrected her gently.

"Your Earth doesn't recognize me."

Tala's eyes narrowed.

"Don't make that distinction sound smaller than it is."

"I'm not."

Brook stepped between them.

"Okay."

Neither moved.

Brook looked at Tala.

"What's wrong?"

"The Earth is uncomfortable."

Gabriel said nothing.

Brook turned toward him.

"And you?"

"I'm fine."

Tala gave a humorless laugh.

"Of course you are."

Gabriel looked at her.

"Should I leave?"

Tala hesitated.

That question seemed to catch her off guard.

"No."

Gabriel nodded.

"Then I'll stay."

"That doesn't mean the Earth accepts you."

"I understand."

Tala stepped forward.

"You don't."

The ground beneath her feet shifted.

Not dramatically.

There was no earthquake.

No crack.

Just a subtle movement.

The stones beneath Gabriel's boots trembled.

Brook felt it immediately.

His fourth mark burned.

He looked down.

A faint pulse moved beneath his skin.

Gabriel noticed.

Tala noticed too.

"See?"

Brook looked at her.

"What?"

"It reacted."

"To him?"

"To both of you."

Gabriel looked down at the ground.

Then back at Tala.

"Does it want me gone?"

Tala's expression softened for half a second.

"I don't know."

"Does it want to hurt me?"

"I don't know."

"Then what do you know?"

Tala stared at him.

"The Earth doesn't know what you are."

Gabriel accepted the words without argument.

Brook felt something deep inside himself stir.

Not a voice.

Not a thought.

A sensation.

Recognition.

The same strange feeling he'd experienced before.

Something within him seemed to listen.

Gabriel looked at Brook.

"You feel it."

Brook nodded.

"Yeah."

Tala's eyes moved between them.

"That's why I'm telling you both to be careful."

Gabriel folded his arms.

"Careful of what?"

"Each other."

Silence.

Brook frowned.

"Why me?"

Tala looked at him.

"Because you're standing between Heaven and Earth."

Brook looked toward Gabriel.

Then back at Tala.

"I'm not choosing either."

"I know."

"Then what's the problem?"

"The problem is that neither side is asking you to choose yet."

Brook's expression tightened.

"And when they do?"

Tala didn't answer.

Gabriel did.

"Then he chooses for himself."

Tala's eyes snapped toward him.

"That's easy for you to say."

"Why?"

"Because Heaven taught you to believe choice is something you can afford."

Gabriel's expression changed.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

"I learned the opposite."

Tala stepped closer.

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"Then why are you here?"

Gabriel looked at Brook.

"Because I chose to come."

Tala followed his gaze.

"And if Heaven orders you back?"

Gabriel looked toward the sky.

"I won't go."

The courtyard became completely silent.

Brook stared at him.

Tala's expression didn't change.

"You would refuse Heaven?"

"Yes."

"Even if they send others?"

"Yes."

"Even if they call you a traitor?"

Gabriel's voice remained calm.

"Then I'm a traitor."

Brook watched him carefully.

There was no hesitation.

No bravado.

Gabriel wasn't trying to impress anyone.

He had simply made his decision.

Tala looked toward the ground.

The earth beneath them remained still.

Then she said,

"You don't understand what Heaven will do."

Gabriel looked at her.

"I understand enough."

"No."

Her voice sharpened.

"You understand Heaven."

She pointed toward the ground.

"I understand this."

Then she pointed toward Brook.

"And he is caught between them."

Gabriel looked at Brook.

"Then perhaps we should stop making him stand between us."

Brook raised an eyebrow.

"Finally, something we agree on."

Tala almost smiled.

Almost.

Then the ground moved again.

This time harder.

The stones shifted beneath their feet.

Brook staggered.

Gabriel reached for him.

Tala shouted,

"Don't!"

Gabriel stopped.

Brook caught himself.

"What the hell?"

The fourth mark burned brightly beneath his skin.

Tala dropped to one knee.

Her hand pressed against the stone.

"Something is wrong."

Gabriel looked at her.

"What?"

"The Earth is reacting."

"To what?"

Tala closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

Brook's breathing became heavier.

He could feel it.

Something underneath them.

Not attacking.

Not defending.

Watching.

Listening.

Judging.

Gabriel looked at Brook.

"Does it hurt?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah."

Tala looked up.

"Don't touch him."

Gabriel's eyes moved toward her.

"I wasn't going to."

"You were."

"I was."

Brook stepped forward.

"Stop."

Both turned toward him.

Brook stood between them.

Literally.

Tala on one side.

Gabriel on the other.

The wind moved through the courtyard.

Brook looked at Tala.

"I trust you."

Then he looked at Gabriel.

"I don't know if I trust you yet."

Gabriel nodded.

"That's fair."

Brook looked back at Tala.

"But I'm not going to turn against him because the Earth doesn't understand him."

Tala's expression softened.

"And I'm not asking you to."

"Then what are you asking?"

"Nothing."

Brook frowned.

"Nothing?"

"I'm asking you to listen."

He glanced down at the ground.

"That's all."

Brook looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel nodded.

"She's right."

Tala looked surprised.

Gabriel continued.

"The Earth doesn't need to accept me today."

Brook looked at him.

"And you don't need to leave."

"No."

Gabriel glanced toward the sky.

"But I won't force myself onto something that doesn't want me."

Tala stood.

"Good."

For a moment, everything settled.

The fourth mark dimmed.

The stones stopped trembling.

Brook exhaled.

Then Gabriel spoke.

"Can I ask you something?"

Tala nodded cautiously.

"Why are you so afraid of Heaven?"

Her eyes hardened.

"I'm not afraid of Heaven."

Gabriel waited.

"I'm afraid of what Heaven believes it has the right to do."

Gabriel's expression became thoughtful.

"That's different."

"Very."

Brook watched them.

The hostility was still there.

But something else had appeared.

Understanding.

Not trust.

Not friendship.

Just the beginning of recognizing that the other side wasn't as simple as they had assumed.

Tala looked toward Gabriel.

"You said Heaven taught you choice."

"Yes."

"Then remember something."

Gabriel waited.

"The Earth has choices too."

Gabriel nodded.

"I believe you."

Brook looked at him.

"Really?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Gabriel glanced down.

"Because it hasn't killed me."

Tala almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, she shook her head.

"You really are strange."

Gabriel smiled.

"I've heard that."

Brook groaned.

"Can everyone stop saying that?"

Neither answered.

Brook looked from one to the other.

Then he noticed something.

The earth beneath Gabriel's feet was no longer trembling.

It still didn't welcome him.

It still didn't recognize him.

But it had stopped resisting.

For now.

Brook looked down at his hand.

The fourth mark was quiet.

He didn't know what it wanted.

He didn't know what Heaven wanted.

He didn't know what Hell wanted.

And he certainly didn't know what Gabriel would become in the days ahead.

But he knew one thing.

He wasn't choosing a side.

Not Heaven.

Not Earth.

Not Hell.

Not anyone.

If the world wanted a war over him, it would have to learn something first.

Brook Smith was not a prize.

He was not property.

And he wasn't going to stand aside while everyone else decided where he belonged.

He looked at Gabriel.

Then Tala.

"I'm going inside."

Tala nodded.

Gabriel followed.

Brook stopped.

"You can come."

Gabriel smiled.

"I was hoping you would say that."

Tala watched them walk away.

She remained alone in the courtyard.

Her bare feet rested against the stone.

Slowly, she lowered her eyes.

The Earth was quiet again.

But it was listening.

And whatever it was listening for—

it had not decided yet.
