Chapter 12 - Beginning of the struggle

'The fissure narrowed into a rough-hewn tunnel of black stone, the air growing colder and heavier with every step. At its end stood a heavy iron-bound gate, its surface pitted with age and streaked with dark residue. Ivan raised a hand, signaling the others to halt. His eyes narrowed as he extended his spiritual sense through the gate.

"Three Qi Condensation on the other side," he murmured. "No higher. They're careless."

Gabriel nodded once. The concealing talisman still hummed faintly against their skin, though the constant pressure of the baleful aura was effecting their spiritual energy.

Ivan shoved the gate open with a surge of Foundation Building strength. The hinges screamed, but the team was already moving.

They poured through like a breaking wave.

The three bandits barely had time to rise from their dice game before steel met their necks. Gabriel's blade took one through the throat in a single fluid motion. Wren's sword flashed twice. Ivan's palm strike crumpled the last against the wall hard enough to crack stone. The bodies hit the floor with wet, final sounds.

They continued further into the bandit hideout.

The corridors twisted downward, lit by sputtering oil lamps that cast long, trembling shadows. The malevolent energy grew denser as they went deeper. Distant echoes of voices and the occasional harsh laugh drifted from further within, but the outer chambers had been thoroughly cleared.

Then the tunnel opened into a vast cavern.

Torches lined the walls, illuminating a raised stone platform at the far end. Mad Viper stood there, a man in his fifties whose presence alone made the air feel heavier. A long scar carved down the left side of his face, pulling the corner of his mouth into a permanent sneer. Black hair shot through with gray was tied loosely at the nape of his neck. In one hand he rested a massive double-edged axe, its blade dark with old blood and faintly etched with crude runes. His cultivation pressure rolled outward in heavy waves—Foundation Building Level 8, solid and oppressive.

Three men flanked him.

One at Foundation Building Level 1, lean and sharp-eyed, another at Level 3, broader, with a heavy saber, and one at Level 4, the strongest of the three, already rolling his shoulders as if eager for violence.

Gabriel, Ivan, Jason, Eleanor, and Wren stopped a full thirty paces away, weapons ready.

Ivan's voice carried across the cavern, cold and clear. "Your men outside are dead, this stronghold is finished."

Mad Viper's gaze swept over them with open contempt. He did not even straighten from his casual stance. A low, rasping chuckle escaped him.

"Ants," he said, the word dripping with disdain. "Little sect ants who think killing a few dogs makes them wolves. You don't even understand what you've walked into." His eyes lingered on Eleanor and Wren with the same ugly hunger the earlier bandits had shown, then dismissed them. "Kill them. Slowly if you like. I have better things to do."

He raised one hand and slammed his palm against a stone mechanism set into the platform.

A section of the cavern wall behind him ground open with a deep, grinding roar. From the darkness beyond poured an ungodly flood of baleful aura—thicker, darker, and more malevolent than anything they had felt so far. It rolled across the floor like living smoke, carrying the stench of rot, old blood, and something far older and hungrier. The temperature in the cavern dropped. The torches flickered wildly.

Gabriel's fingers twitched toward his storage ring, already reaching for formation flags—

Too late.

The Stage 4 bandit slammed into Ivan. The Stage 3 closed on Jason. The Stage 1 charged straight at Gabriel, Eleanor, and Wren.

The cavern exploded into chaos.

Ivan met the Level 4 head-on, their blades colliding with a sound like splitting stone. Sparks and qi shockwaves rippled outward. Jason engaged the Level 3, his Foundation Building strength pushed to its limit against the heavier, more experienced saber.

Gabriel, Eleanor, and Wren faced the Level 1 together.

Eleanor's strongest barrier art flared into existence—Aegis of the Unbroken Veil. A translucent dome of force locked the Stage 1 fighter inside with them, its surface rippling like living glass. Wren's sword left its sheath in a silver arc as she unleashed her strongest technique, Severing Gale Sword. Wind qi howled around the blade, sharp enough to shear stone. Gabriel moved beside them, the three fighting as one against the trapped bandit while the other two duels raged across the cavern.

Gabriel stepped in.

*Rootcleaver* rose, and with it came a new circulation of power. Water Qi, cool and flowing, began to nourish the Wood Qi that had always resided quietly in his body—an affinity deepened by the Earth-grade sword and the forest itself. The two energies intertwined. His movements lost every trace of stiffness, becoming fluid, continuous, almost liquid, while the Wood Qi lent each stance a deep, rooted endurance.

**Verdant River Sword.**

Gabriel's movements were fluid, his sword strikes flowing one into the next, accompanied by twisting threads of green Wood Qi that coiled around the blade like living vines. The Level 1 bandit's saber met the first strike and was turned aside as if striking moving water. The second and third cuts forced him back, green qi scraping across his guard and leaving faint, stinging marks on his skin.

Gabriel was unprepared for a fist to his stomach, causing him to stagger. Wren used a sword art whispering cut, which shrouded the blade with wind qi, vanishing in an instant and reappearing, leaving a deep gash on the man's thigh. He roared and staggered.

Eleanor's barrier snapped back into place just in time to catch a desperate counter-slash that would have taken Gabriel's shoulder. The impact still drove her back two steps, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.

Gabriel swept *Rootcleaver* in a wide arc. A wave of Water Qi surged forward while vines erupted from the stone floor beneath the bandit's feet, coiling upward. The man hacked downward, severing several vines, but the water wave slammed into his chest and sent him skidding.

Wren's movement technique Gale Steps allows her to attack from multiple different angles. One cut from Wren's wind qi opened up his guard; another scored across his ribs.

That was the opening Gabriel was waiting for. Water and Wood Qi erupted simultaneously around *Rootcleaver*. The blade became the centre of a brief, violent storm of green and blue energy.

Gabriel stepped in and drove the final thrust through the bandit's heart. The man stiffened, eyes wide, then collapsed as the dual qi tore through his dantian and meridians.

Across the cavern, Ivan finished the Level 4 with a brutal overhead slash that split the man's guard and the man beneath it. Jason, blood running freely from a gash along his side, managed a desperate reverse-grip thrust that punched through the Level 3's throat just as the heavier bandit raised his saber for a killing blow.

Silence returned, broken only by ragged breathing and the low, constant pulse of the baleful energy still leaking from the open cellar door.

Everyone was injured.

Ivan's left arm hung slightly lower than it should, blood soaking through his sleeve. Jason leaned heavily on one knee, face pale. Eleanor's barrier had shattered completely; a dark bruise was already forming along her collarbone. Wren's arm wound still bled steadily. Gabriel himself felt the sting of shallow cuts, a punch in the gut and the deeper ache of qi expenditure.

But the three underlings were finally dead.

Only Mad Viper remained.

The bandit leader had not moved from the platform. He watched them with the same condescending boredom, as though the deaths of his men were of no importance to him. The scar on his face pulled his mouth into that permanent sneer. Behind him, the secret doorway continued to vomit out its ungodly aura into the cavern, and something deeper in that darkness seemed to shift.

Mad Viper lifted his double-edged axe onto one shoulder.

"Still standing," he said, almost mildly. "Annoying. But ants can still be crushed."

He stepped down from the platform.

The true fight for survival was only just beginning.
