The blazing sun hung high in the sky, scorching the world below. The moment they stepped out of the car, the searing heat made it difficult to breathe. There was still wind in this Hyperthermal Hell, but it would have been better if there wasn't—every gust was like a pot of red-hot coals being dumped over their heads.
After getting out of the car, Luther and Marcie immediately furrowed their brows, covering their mouths and noses. Since all the plants and trees had died off, the high temperatures had turned the soil to sand. Thick, yellow dust, whipped up by the wind, raged through the air. Grains of sand collected on their eyebrows and eyelashes, making it impossible to fully open their eyes; they could only squint at their surroundings.
The moment Marcie opened her mouth, she choked on the yellow sand and coughed several times before she managed to say, "...Are you sure? I was bringing up the rear, but I didn't notice any cars behind us."
