The moment Riya stepped inside the Malhotra mansion, her breath caught in her throat.
She had no idea how amazing the location was. The marble floors shone like mirrors beneath her feet. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, spreading golden light across the grand hall.
The walls were covered in pricey artwork, and every corner of the house whispered wealth and power. She suddenly became conscious of her simple background.
A middle-aged man in a neat uniform approached her with a polite smile.
"Welcome, Mrs. Malhotra. I am Thomas, the head butler of this house."
Mrs. Malhotra.
Her heart was heavy because of the title.
"Mr. Malhotra is in his study and waiting for you," Thomas added with respect. Riya gave him a nod and followed him down a long hallway. Strange was the mansion's silence. There were servants present, but there was no sound. No warmth. Without life Thomas stopped in front of a large wooden door.
After taking a deep breath, Riya softly knocked. Arjun's icy voice inside said, "Come in." She entered the space. Arjun was staring out the large window at the city view with his hands in his pockets and his back to her. Without turning toward her, he spoke.
"There are some rules you must follow while staying in this house."
Riya listened intently while remaining silent. You will initially remain in the guest room. My room is strictly off-limits."
"Second, you will not interfere in my personal or professional life."
"Third, in front of outsiders, you will act like my perfect wife. No one should doubt this marriage."
He finally turned around to face her.
His sharp eyes locked onto hers.
And last but not least, do not attempt to become emotionally involved. This is simply a deal. Each word pierced her heart like a needle.
Riya gathered the courage to speak.
"And what if I don't follow these rules?"
The room became silent for a brief moment. Arjun stepped closer to her.
It was intimidating to be in his presence. He scolded, "Then this deal ends." "And you are well aware of the implications that have for your father."
She lost all hope. She was gripped by fear. She replied softly, lowering her gaze, "I understand." Arjun gave her a brief glance before passing by her as if she were not there. Thomas came to guide her to her room.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she walked the long hallway. This mansion was breathtakingly beautiful.
But for her... It reminded me of a golden cage. Her room was larger than her entire house back home. The balcony offered a mesmerizing view of the city, the curtains were elegant, and the bed was soft.
Nevertheless, she felt suffocated. Riya curled up against her knees on the edge of the bed that night. Her mind was full of questions.
What kind of man lives with so many rules?
Why does he keep his distance from everyone? What is he trying so hard to hide?
And unconsciously...
She had already expressed an interest in knowing him.
