The date— 30th July 2005, marked the day when Kiyomi is officially a 5 years old. But during Omagatoki (The Hour of Meeting Evil Spirits).
AROUND 6:30PM
THE KUZUNOHA CLAN ELDERS
The air in the estate didn't just shift—it vibrated with a frequency unheard of.
For five years, we watched the girl's Cursed Energy pool like a quiet, still lake.
We always wondered if the Fox was sleeping, or if it's blood had thinned too much over the centuries.
Then, in a single heartbeat, the lake in question became a whirlpool.
The screens rattled in their frames, and the scent of wild ozone and cedar filled the halls.
We rushed to the inner chamber, our hearts in our throats, silk robes snapping at the wodden floors due to rush.
There she was.
Kiyomi, now a 5 year-old, sitting on the tatami mats, looking remarkably calm for a five-year-old who had just fractured the air itself.
And beside her...
White fur. Shimmering blue undertones like moonlight on snow. Blue piercing eyes.
Large, tufted ears that twitched at the slightest sound.
It wasn't just a Shikigami; it was the Manifestation.
The Guardian.
"The First Tail," the Head Elder whispered, falling to his knees. "The record already estimated manifestation of guardian at age 5. It hasn't walked in these halls since Lady Kuzunoha."
We have our proof.
The contract with the Kamo feels more like a cage for a hurricane now.
KIYOMI KUZUNOHA (Age 5)
Everything felt hot for a second.
Like I had swallowed a spark from the fireplace. It TINGLED in my toes and made my ears ring like a sound of hundreds of bells.
I closed my eyes for a second, and when I opened them, the room felt different.
It felt... friendly and warm.
Then, something soft and ticklish brushed against my cheek.
It was warm.
It smelled like rain.
I turned my head and saw the smallest, prettiest fox I had ever seen.
Its fur was so white it looked like a cloud, and when it moved, I saw some blue under that fur.
His eyes were blue, pretty.
I didn't think about "Heirs" or "Guardians" or "The King of Curses."
"Haku," I whispered, the only word that came to my mind after looking at his white fur, reaching out to boop its tiny nose. "Your name is Haku. So, you were the one qho occasionally tickle me."
He yapped—a tiny, sweet sound—and hopped onto my shoulder curled around my neck like a living scarf.
He felt like he had always been there.
Finally, I thought. Someone to play with who isn't a grumpy elder or an annoying cousin.
Speaking of which...
SATORU GOJO (Age 15)
I was halfway through the main gate ignoring elders and complaining to myself about the lack of decent souvenirs in this province, when the "ping" hit my Six Eyes.
It wasn't a threat.
It wasn't the jagged, ugly energy of an assassin.
It felt like... Something.
I didn't bother with the hallways.
I didn't have the patience for the bowing guards.
I just walked upto her room, and slid the door open before the guards could even finish saying "Young Master Gojo"
"Kiyomi!"
I stopped.
The kid was sitting there with a fox-like thing on her shoulder.
But it wasn't just a fox.
To my eyes, that thing was a concentrated mass of ancient, refined Cursed Energy.
It was beautiful. It was terrifying.
"So, you finally did it," I said, a massive grin appearing on my face.
I shoved my hands in my pockets and walked over, leaning down to her eye level, practically bending myself in half because she was small and sitting on floor, to get a better look. "Nice timing. I was getting tired of waiting for you to manifest something besides pretty handwriting."
The fox didn't appreciated my comment, and hissed at me.
A tiny spark of blue fox-fire danced on its tail.
I heard one elder gasping behind me, I'll ask them some questions later. Right now, my priority was this.
"Whoa, easy there, little guy," I laughed. "I'm the cousin. I'm the one who brings the good candy. I'm allowed to be here."
I looked at Kiyomi. She looked... brighter.
Like a lamp had been turned on inside her.
"One tail down," I muttered, ruffling her hair. "Eight to go. Don't take another five years for the next one, okay? I want to see that Domain Expansion before I graduate."
I saw her rolling her eyes, worth it.
NAOBITO ZENIN
The messenger nearly tripped over his own feet. His face pale.
"It manifested? Now?"
I stared at the report.
A one-tailed fox.
Small, but the energy readings the observers sent back were absurd for a five-year-old. It wasn't just a Shikigami; it was.. Something hidden in those scrolls in their shrine.
The Kuzunoha aren't just returning. They are accelerating. Towards the peak we only imagined to achieve.
"Haku," I read the name on the parchment. "The girl named it? It's like giving a child name for a God's shadow. "
I looked at Naoya, who was training in the courtyard, his Projection Sorcery Technique developing his movements sharp but lacking that "natural" spark the girl now possessed.
The world is changing.
The Gojo boy is a monster, and now the Kuzunoha girl has her first fang.
The Zenin strategies needed to pivot.
We had spent previous years debating about her being Kamo bride.
Now? Now the question was whether we could afford to let the Kamo have her at all.
She wasn't a prize; she was a variable that could unbalance the entire Three Great Houses.
OGI ZENIN
I gripped the hilt of my sword until the wood creaked, my knuckles white with a fury I had to keep buried.
Five years old and she has already summoned the Guardian.
I think of my own daughters—the failures I have to hide in the corners of my estate—and the bitterness tastes like copper in my mouth.
"It's just a fox," I spat, my voice made the servants flinch. "A beast that hasn't seen the light of day since the Heian Era. If it was so powerful, why did it hide for a thousand years?"
But I know the truth.
I am looking at a power I will never possess.
I am looking at a child who, in a few years, will be able to look down on me just as Naobito and that Gojo heir do.
She disgusts me.
That fox disgusts me.
Power like that…is being wasted on her.
NAOYA ZENIN (Age 14)
I heard the news through the servants' gossip.
"The Fox has woken up."
I gripped my sword so hard the wood creaked.
Five-years old.
She's five-years old and she's already manifesting the legendary Shikigami.
I'm fourteen.
I've worked every single day. I've bled for my rank.
And yet, all anyone talks about is the girl in the forest and her pet.
"It's just a fox," I told myself, my voice cold. "It's a pet. It doesn't mean she can fight. It doesn't mean she's better than me."
But I remembered her eyes from the birthday ceremony. Those ink-black eyes, which made me straighten my collar.
I swung my sword at the practice post, shearing the top off in a spray of splinters.
"If she's going to be a Kamo," I hissed, "they better keep her on a short leash. Because if she ever gets all nine tails... no one's going to be able to tell her what to do."
The thought made me angry.
And, in a way I hated to admit, it made me want to go to the Shinoda forest and see it for myself.
THE KAMO CLAN (Head of Kamo Clan)
"Inform the elders. Immediately"
My voice was a whisper in the dark shrine.
"The Kuzunoha Heir has summoned the First Tail.
The news of the Manifestation reached us fast.
The betrothal at age six is no longer just a 'proposal.' It is a necessity. We must tether her blood to ours before she realizes she is stronger than the contract."
We cannot let that power mature outside of our influence.
If she stays with the Gojo boy, she will become a wild fire.
If she comes to the Kamo, we will turn that fire into a refined, surgical weapon.
I looked at the group of five-year-olds standing nearby. All of them quiet, all of them obedient.
"The Fox has found her strength," I told them, my eyes settling on the one who showed the most promise in Blood Manipulation, Noritoshi, my concubine's child. "You must find your strength too. If you are weak when you meet her next year, she will not be your bride. She will be your executioner."
HAKU (The Guardian Fox)
Silence.
For a thousand years, there was only silence.
I do not remember the name of the one who came before this kid.
The Tall One (Satoru) called her Kiyomi.
I do not remember the face of my previous master.
I lost them during the fight I barely remember.
I was a tool back then.
A weapon to be unsheathed and broken.
They called me a Tenko (Heavenly Fox)
Then, there was a spark.
I followed the scent of cedar and ozone until I found her.
A small soul, bright and fierce, sitting in the middle of a forest of white light.
She didn't look at me with authority.
She didn't look at me like a sword.
She called me "Haku."
The word vibrated through me, stitching in my memory.
A name.
I have a name.
I am no longer just the "Guardian of the Kitsune."
I am Haku.
I curled around her neck, my fur pressing against her warm skin.
The tall boy with blue eyes—the one who smells like the infinite sky—he is loud, but he is a friend.
I flicked my tail, a spark of blue fire dancing on the tip.
Let them come, I thought, closing my eyes against the girl's soft hair. I am Haku. And I will burn anyone who tries to take my Master back into the silence.
Note:
Research work was tiring tbh.
Now, regarding some deeper details about the elements used in this chapter-
Omagotoki is the transition between day and night. It is the moment when the sun has set, but the stars aren't out yet— yk that dreamy like sky. This is known as the time when the world becomes blurred and humans can accidentally stumble into the realm of the yōkai (they're a broad category of supernatural entities, spirits, and monsters.)..
I didn't chosed midnight because Kitsune (foxes) are rarely associated with night. They are creatures of twilight.
Further, i chosed this time exactly because-
1-Kitsune are masters of illusion. This would symbolise that the Kitsune thrives the most during the blur of time between the day and night.
2-Fox-fire (Kitsunebi) is most visible and haunting at dusk time, not in total darkness.
*This is important for lore, that's why i didn't posted it as Author's Thoughts.
