Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine: The Zero-Zone Date

Aethelgard's data twin was officially launched on Thursday. The city council held a celebration in the Chancery ballroom, the very room where Elara had fixed the echo-point. The city was aglow, every citizen a node in a massive, optimized network.

Except for one place.

On the roof of The Obsidian, Elara and Julian met. It was the only place in the city that remained 'un-indexable.' The air was cold, smelling of rain and stone.

"You are very good at creating problems," Julian said, his eyes on the city below.

"And you are very good at making them disappear," Elara replied, her hand tracing the rough texture of a gargoyle.

They sat in the shadow of the structure they had protected. Julian had brought a bottle of wine from a district that didn't appear on any tourist map, and Elara had brought bread from a baker who still used a brick oven.

It was their version of a date. They didn't talk about their pasts or their dreams. They talked about the building. They talked about how the gargoyles were positioned to channel rainwater away from the windows, about the acoustic properties of the service stairs, about the weight-bearing capacity of the hidden beam they had wired.

Their intimacy was built from shared technical knowledge and mutual respect. They were falling in love not with each other's faces, but with the way their minds solved the same problems from different directions. They were an impossible equation, and they were the only ones who knew how to balance it.

"When I was in the Electrical Room," Elara said, her voice barely a whisper, "I could hear the city. It sounded... empty."

"It's not empty," Julian said, taking her hand. "It's just content. It's given up the need to be in exchange for the safety of being recorded."

"We didn't," she said, looking at him. Her eyes reflected the moonlight.

"No," he said, his fingers tightening around hers. "We did not."
