Chapter 5 - CHAPTER FIVE: AFTER THE MASKS FALL

The ride home was silent.

Not the calm kind.

The kind that pressed against your chest until it hurt to breathe.

Diana stared out the window, watching the city lights blur past.

"You didn't have to do that," she said finally.

Victor didn't look at her. "Do what?"

"Defend me like that."

"I wasn't aware it required effort."

Her lips pressed together. "You made a scene."

"No," he said calmly. "I ended one."

Diana turned to him. "You don't even like me."

That got his attention.

Slowly, his gaze shifted to hers.

"You're confusing interest with obligation," he said.

Her brows pulled together. "So this is obligation?"

Victor held her gaze for a moment too long.

Then

"No."

The answer was quiet.

But it landed.

The car stopped.

The mansion loomed ahead, darker than usual. Heavier.

Diana stepped out first.

She needed space.

Air.

Something.

But the moment she entered

"Diana."

She froze.

Ethan.

Of course.

He stood in the middle of the living room like he had been waiting.

Like he owned the place.

Her patience snapped instantly. "You really don't know when to leave, do you?"

Ethan ignored that, stepping closer. "We need to talk."

"There's nothing to talk about."

"There is," he insisted. "You married my father."

"And you slept with my sister," she shot back. "I'd say we're even."

That hit.

Hard.

Ethan exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "It wasn't like that."

Diana laughed.

Actually laughed.

"That's exactly what it was."

"Leave."

Victor's voice came from behind her.

Cold.

Final.

Diana didn't turn, but she felt him step closer.

Felt the shift.

Ethan's jaw tightened. "This doesn't concern you."

Victor's response was instant. "Everything that involves my wife concerns me."

Silence.

Thick.

Ethan scoffed. "You keep saying that like it means something."

Victor moved then.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

But deliberate.

Until he was standing right beside Diana.

Close enough to make a point.

"It means everything," he said quietly.

Diana's heart skipped.

Again.

And she hated it.

Ethan looked between them, something dark flashing in his eyes. "You think this is real?"

Victor didn't respond.

Didn't need to.

That silence said more than words ever could.

Ethan turned to Diana. "You're making a mistake."

She met his gaze, steady this time. "No. I already made one."

A pause.

Then—

"And I'm done repeating it."l

That did it.

Ethan stepped back, shaking his head. "This isn't over."

Victor's voice dropped slightly. "It is for tonight."

The message was clear.

Leave.

Now.

Ethan left.

But something about the way he walked out—

It didn't feel finished.

It felt like a warning.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

But it was different now.

Heavier.

Closer.

Diana exhaled slowly. "You could've let me handle that."

Victor's gaze was already on her. "You were handling it emotionally."

"And that's a problem?"

"It's inefficient."

She stared at him. "You're unbelievable."

"And you're predictable," he replied calmly.

Her eyes flashed. "You don't know me."

Victor stepped closer.

Of course he did.

Always closing the distance.

"I know enough," he said.

"Like what?" she challenged.

His gaze dropped briefly—to her lips—then back up.

"That you act like you're in control," he said quietly, "but you react to everything."

Diana's breath hitched.

"That's not true."

Victor tilted his head slightly. "Then prove it."

The air shifted.

Something dangerous.

Something new.

Diana didn't step back.

Didn't look away.

Instead, she took a small step forward.

Closing the gap herself this time.

"If I react so much," she said softly, "why am I still here?"

Victor's eyes darkened.

That was the wrong question.

Or maybe…

The right one.

"Because you don't have a choice," he said.

Diana shook her head slightly. "No."

A pause.

Then—

"I'm here because I chose to stay."

Silence.

Heavy.

Electric.

For the first time…

Victor didn't respond immediately.

And that alone felt like a shift in power.

Then he leaned in slightly.

Close enough for his voice to drop.

Lower.

Rougher.

"Be careful with that illusion," he said. "Choice can disappear very quickly in my world."

Diana's heart pounded.

But she didn't move.

Didn't break.

"Then maybe," she whispered, "you should be careful too."

That did it.

Something snapped.

Not anger.

Not control.

Something far more dangerous.

Victor's hand lifted—

Then stopped.

Mid-air.

Like he was holding himself back.

Diana saw it.

Felt it.

And for the first time…

She understood something terrifying.

He wasn't struggling to control her.

He was struggling to control himself.

And that made him far more dangerous.
