Chapter 3 - The Hunter

William watched the moving line in the sand for several seconds before the reality of the situation began to settle in.

Whatever was traveling beneath the dunes was moving far faster than anything that should reasonably exist in a desert. The trail cut across the landscape with alarming speed, tearing through the sand like a spear thrown across water.

At first he thought it might pass the crater.

But the line adjusted.

The movement shifted slightly, correcting its course.

Still heading toward the crater.

Still heading toward him.

A quiet tension crept into his chest.

William turned slowly and looked along the rim of the crater, scanning the desert around him for anything that might offer cover.

The landscape was mostly open sand, broken only by scattered patches of exposed stone.

Except for one place.

Several hundred meters away, jagged shapes rose unevenly from the dunes. At first glance they looked like broken rock formations, but the angles were too precise. Sections of flat stone jutted from the sand in unnatural lines.

Ruins.

William didn't hesitate.

He started running.

The sand shifted beneath his feet as he moved across the rim of the crater. Each step sank slightly into the loose surface, slowing his pace just enough to make the distance feel longer than it should have been.

Behind him, the moving line in the sand continued closing the gap.

The disturbance beneath the dunes was closer now. Even from this distance William could see the sand collapsing inward as something large forced its way through the ground.

The speed alone was enough to make his stomach tighten.

He pushed himself faster.

The ruins grew larger with every step. Up close they were clearly part of some kind of structure, though most of it had long since collapsed. Thick stone blocks formed broken walls half-buried in the sand, and several tall pillars leaned at awkward angles where time had worn away their supports.

William reached the edge of the ruins and scrambled onto the nearest section of exposed stone.

The ground here was solid.

That alone was a relief.

He climbed higher, pulling himself onto a broken platform formed by several massive slabs that had fallen together over time. The stone surface was uneven but stable, and it raised him several meters above the surrounding sand.

Only then did he turn back toward the desert.

The moving line in the sand had reached the crater.

For a moment the surface of the dunes went completely still.

Then the sand erupted.

A massive shape burst upward from the ground with explosive force, scattering sand in every direction.

The creature that emerged looked like something halfway between a serpent and a massive burrowing insect. Its body was long and segmented, each section protected by thick plates of pale chitin that overlapped like armor. Several powerful limbs extended from the front half of its body, each tipped with hooked claws designed for digging.

Its head rose above the sand slowly.

Rows of jagged mandibles flexed as the creature tasted the air.

Faint blue lines ran beneath its shell.

The same crystalline veins William had seen inside the dead creature earlier.

The monster was enormous.

Even with part of its body still buried beneath the dunes, it was easily the length of a large vehicle.

William didn't move.

The creature turned its head slightly.

The moment its mandibles opened, a low clicking sound echoed across the desert.

It had noticed him.

The monster surged forward instantly.

Sand exploded behind it as the creature lunged across the dunes, its massive body propelling itself forward with frightening speed.

William stepped backward onto the higher section of the ruins, his eyes locked on the approaching predator.

The creature reached the base of the structure within seconds.

Its claws tore through the sand as it attempted to climb the stone foundation, but the solid surface made the movement difficult. The creature slammed its body against the base of the ruins instead, sending vibrations through the stone beneath William's feet.

The predator circled the structure once, its long body carving trenches through the sand as it searched for a way up.

William stayed completely still.

The creature's head lifted again, mandibles opening as it clicked softly into the air.

It knew he was there.

But the stone platform kept him just out of reach.

The monster continued circling.

Minutes passed.

Then an hour.

The sun slowly moved across the sky as the desert heat intensified. William stayed where he was, barely shifting his weight as the predator below continued its slow patrol around the ruins.

Every time the creature moved out of sight, it eventually returned.

Waiting.

Watching.

The sun eventually dipped toward the horizon, casting long shadows across the desert. The air grew cooler, but the creature's patience didn't seem to fade.

Night settled over the dunes.

The predator was still there.

William hadn't moved from his position on the stone platform for hours. His legs ached and his throat burned with thirst, but every time he considered climbing down, the creature shifted somewhere below the ruins.

Still watching.

Still waiting.

Then the ground shook.

At first the vibration was faint, barely noticeable beneath the stone at William's feet.

But it grew stronger.

The predator below reacted instantly.

Its head snapped toward the distant dunes, mandibles clicking rapidly as it sensed something approaching beneath the sand.

The surface of the desert began to ripple.

A massive wave of shifting dunes rolled across the landscape toward the ruins.

Whatever was coming was much larger.

The first creature tried to retreat.

But it was too late.

The sand erupted again.

A colossal shape burst from the ground beneath the predator, jaws snapping shut around the smaller creature's midsection with crushing force.

The impact sent both monsters crashing into the dunes beside the ruins.

The larger creature was monstrous.

Its body was thicker, longer, and far more heavily armored than the predator that had stalked William all day. Massive spines ran along its back, and its head was built like a living battering ram lined with jagged teeth.

The smaller predator shrieked as the larger creature dragged it violently across the sand.

The fight was brutal and short.

The larger beast slammed the smaller predator against the dunes repeatedly before its jaws finally snapped shut around the creature's head.

The sound of cracking chitin echoed through the night.

The smaller monster went still.

For several minutes the larger creature remained where it was, its massive body partially buried in the sand as it tore into its prey.

William didn't move.

He barely even breathed.

Eventually the creature lifted its head.

Its body shifted slowly, orienting itself toward the distant crater.

Then, with a powerful surge of movement, the massive predator disappeared beneath the sand once more.

The dunes settled.

Silence returned to the desert.

William waited.

Several more minutes passed before he finally allowed himself to move.

The ruins were quiet now.

Carefully, he climbed down from the stone platform and stepped onto the sand below.

His eyes scanned the surrounding dunes one last time.

Nothing moved.

Without another glance back, William turned and began walking in the opposite direction of the crater.
