Chapter 58 - My Darkest Spell Turns Out To Be The Real Thing

The war hammers came down.

Abel threw himself sideways. The impact cratered the ground where he'd been standing, stone fragments spraying outward like shrapnel. The Earth Demon followed through with a second swing, horizontal, aimed at Abel's midsection. Abel ducked under it, felt the displaced air tug at his hood, and rolled clear.

Stone spears erupted from the ground beneath his feet. Not random this time. Targeted. The Earth Demon had locked onto his position and was attacking from below while swinging from above. Pincer movement.

The black-smoke wings snapped open. Abel launched upward, weaving between stalactites that shot from the ceiling to intercept him. The subspace was the Earth Demon's body, his territory. Every surface was a weapon.

No levitation charm. Too slow, too static. In here, anything that doesn't move dies.

Abel banked hard, dove beneath a horizontal stone blade that would have bisected him, and fired back over his shoulder.

"Depulso!"

The concussive blast caught the Earth Demon in the chest and staggered him two steps. Not enough. The stone-fused body absorbed blunt force like a sponge absorbs water.

Abel touched down thirty meters away, wand raised, mind racing.

Caecus was burned. The devils could track his magical fluctuations now. Sectumsempra couldn't cut through of the reinforced flesh of the erath demon. Bombarda was doing surface damage at best. The Earth Demon was too durable for anything in Abel's standard arsenal.

The remaining devils, fewer than half the original number, regrouped behind their master. The Earth Demon's crimson eyes locked onto Abel.

"That's all you got? Then let me advise you, hand over the Contract of San Venganza. Or death won't be the end of your story. It will only be the beginning, the beginning of your endless torment."

Abel watched the cracks on the Earth Demon's chest seal themselves shut, the stone knitting together as if the damage had never happened.

Regeneration through his connection to the subspace. As long as this pocket dimension exists, he can repair himself indefinitely. Standard attacks won't work. I need something that damages on a level stone can't regenerate from.

Abel smiled.

"If that speech was meant to scare me, it's not very effective. It only spares me some time to think about how to destroy you." He raised his wand. "This is the real show."

He spoke the incantation.

"Incendio Diabolica."

Black and red flames erupted from the wand's tip.

Not ordinary fire. Not even the enhanced combustion of a standard fire spell. This was something else entirely. The flames poured outward like a breaking wave, spreading across the subspace floor in a tide of heat that made the stone beneath it glow cherry-red and crack.

Abel's eyes widened.

This is wrong. This isn't how Fiendfyre looks. In my previous life, Fiendfyre was orange-gold, chaotic, animalistic. This is black and red. This feels different. This feels like—

Hellfire.

The Fiendfyre Curse had mutated. Just as the Patronus Charm had evolved into something purer and more potent in this world's magical framework, the Fiendfyre had changed too. The spell's English name had always been a metaphor: devil's fire, hell's fire. A description of its danger, not its origin.

In this world, the metaphor had become literal. And with it, something had shifted inside Abel. Not in his body. In his magic. A thread of connection, impossibly thin, linking him to something vast and ancient and burning. A trace of authority over hellfire, stolen from the spell's mutation, lodged in his magical core like an ember in a bed of ash.

Not Mephisto's authority. Not borrowed, not granted, not contracted. His own. Tiny. Fragile. Barely enough to keep the flames from consuming him alongside everything else. But real.

Authority. That's what this is. The same force that lets Mephisto command the fires of Hell, that lets Laufey freeze space with a thought. Except mine is a splinter where theirs is an ocean. A candle flame next to a sun.

But it's mine.

The black-red hellfire swept through the subspace. Devils screamed. Their sulfur-resistant bodies, evolved over millennia in Hell's own furnaces, offered no protection against the genuine fire of their own dimension. Hellfire burned on a spiritual level, consuming essence, not flesh. The devils didn't burn. They unraveled, their forms dissolving into ash and nothing.

Abel hadn't known. Couldn't have known. He'd never cast the Fiendfyre Curse in this world before. The power that poured through his wand was staggering, almost beyond his ability to control. The flames wanted to spread, to consume, to devour everything in reach. Abel's will strained against the spell's hunger like a man gripping a fire hose at full pressure.

Control it. Don't let it spread beyond the targets. If I lose control in here, the hellfire will consume everything, including me.

The wand vibrated in his hand. A faint sound, almost inaudible, reached his ears. A sound like cracking glass.

Fuck my wand. The hellfire is too much for it.

Abel forced the flames into a narrower stream, directing them toward the Earth Demon. The black-red fire coiled into serpentine shapes, fire snakes that lunged at the Earth Demon with predatory intent.

The Earth Demon's confidence shattered.

"The fire of Hell? You possess authority over hellfire!"

This is what authority means. Even a trace of it outweighs raw power by orders of magnitude. The devils can resist my Bombarda, my Sectumsempra, my Depulso. But they can't resist their own dimension's fire, because the fire carries authority, and authority doesn't negotiate.

He retreated. For the first time since the fight began, the Earth Demon retreated. His stone body, which had shrugged off every spell Abel had thrown, began to crack under the hellfire's assault. The stone didn't melt. It disintegrated, spiritual fire consuming the magical bonds that held his form together.

The remaining devils fled in every direction, trampling each other in their desperation to escape. Hellfire was the ultimate authority in their hierarchy. The fire that Mephisto himself used to punish disobedience. No devil, no matter how powerful, could resist it.

Abel advanced. Step by step, wand extended, channeling every ounce of control he possessed into the fire snakes that pursued the Earth Demon across the crumbling subspace.

"No! Please! Forgive me! Forgive me!"

The Earth Demon's voice cracked with genuine terror. His stone form was fracturing, glowing cracks spreading across his body like veins of magma. The hellfire had penetrated inside him, destroying him from within.

Abel didn't stop.

The Earth Demon's body shattered. Like fired pottery dropped from a great height, his form broke apart, scattering across the ground in smoking fragments. The crimson light in his eyes flickered once and went dark.

The subspace collapsed.

The walls of churning stone dissolved. The sealed ceiling cracked open. The vast arena contracted, shrank, and folded back into the narrow Manhattan alley it had been. The remaining devils, caught in the collapse, were crushed between closing walls of reality reasserting itself.

Abel stood in the alley. The air smelled of ozone and sulfur and something older, something that had no business existing on a New York street.

He looked at his wand.

A crack. Hairline thin, nearly invisible, running along the shaft just below the tip. The Fiendfyre, the hellfire, had been too much. The wand's positive-energy nature conflicted with the dark-origin spell, and the internal stress had fractured the wood.

The wand held. Barely. But if i continue to of that level it won't held for long.

Abel drew the hellfire back. Slowly, carefully, reversing the flow, pulling the black-red flames back through the wand and sealing them away. The process was delicate, like re-bottling a storm. One mistake and the fire would escape, consuming everything in the alley and beyond.

The last wisp of hellfire vanished into the wand. The alley went dark. Quiet. Just an ordinary alley in Hell's Kitchen, slightly messier than usual, with no trace of the battle that had just occurred in the subspace.

Abel exhaled.

Somewhere across the city, he felt it. A flare of familiar energy. Burning, furious, heading in his direction at high speed.

Johnny. The Ghost Rider felt the hellfire and he's coming.

Abel didn't wait, he opened a portal to his apartment rooftop, and stepped through.

The portal closed.

Damnit, I didn't get mom's dessert!

Fifteen seconds later, a flaming motorcycle skidded to a halt at the alley entrance. The Ghost Rider dismounted, walked into the alley, and stood in the residual energy. His skull tilted, sensing, reading, processing.

Then he turned and rode away into the night.

On the rooftop of the New York Sanctum, the Ancient One stood motionless, her gaze fixed on a point in the city that no human eye could see.

Daniel appeared behind her. "Ancient One, what happened to Master Abel?"

"He's safe." Her voice was calm, but something flickered beneath it. Something that might have been awe. "He destroyed the Earth Demon by himself."

"By himself? That's... remarkable."

"More than remarkable." The Ancient One turned to face Daniel. "He used a spell from his inherited tradition, one that was never meant to summon real hellfire. But in this world, the spell mutated. It reached into the Hell dimension and pulled genuine hellfire through, and in doing so, it lodged a trace of hellfire authority into his magical core." She paused, letting the weight of that settle. "A seventeen-year-old mage, fighting alone in a sealed subspace, accidentally acquired a fragment of cosmic authority and used it to kill a high-ranking fallen angel."

Daniel absorbed that in silence. "Authority... like the Dimension Lords possess?"

"The same principle. Incomparably smaller in scale, but identical in nature. Authority is not power. It is dominion. The right to command a fundamental force. Even a trace of it changes everything." The Ancient One's voice carried the particular gravity of someone revising a long-held assumption. "The Patronus Charm gave him a fragment of pure life authority, sacred energy that repels darkness. And now his Fiendfyre has given him a fragment of hellfire authority, the very force Mephisto uses to rule Hell. White and dark, both transformed by this world, both granting him something no human mage has ever held."

She paused.

"When Mephisto discovers this, and he will, things will become considerably more complicated."

She looked out at the city.

"He is becoming something extraordinary, Daniel. And I'm not sure even he understands what that means yet."
