Chapter 13: The Girl Who Didn't Fear Death
The wind moved softly.
But the tension didn't.
Kairo stood still.
Blade in hand.
Target behind him.
And in front of him—
Her.
The girl who didn't move.
Didn't run.
Didn't fear him.
"…Move," Kairo said again.
His voice was cold.
Sharp.
Final.
But she shook her head.
"No."
Silence.
Unshaken
"You're in my way," Kairo said.
"And you're about to make a mistake," she replied.
A pause.
Their eyes locked.
For a moment—
It felt like they were the only two people in the world.
"…Why?" Kairo asked.
The question slipped out before he could stop it.
The girl blinked.
"Why what?"
"Why are you not afraid?"
Silence.
Then—
She smiled.
Not mockingly.
Not nervously.
Just… softly.
"Because I can see you're not what you pretend to be."
Kairo's grip tightened.
"…You're wrong."
"Am I?"
She stepped closer.
One step.
That alone—
Should have terrified her.
But it didn't.
"You hesitate," she said.
A pause.
"And people who hesitate… still feel something."
A Dangerous Truth
Kairo's eyes darkened.
"That hesitation will get you killed," he said.
"Then why haven't you killed me yet?" she asked.
Silence.
That question—
Had no answer.
The Name
"What's your name?" she asked suddenly.
Kairo froze.
A strange feeling passed through him.
Name…
He hadn't heard that word in years.
"…I don't have one."
She frowned slightly.
"That's not true."
Silence.
"…Everyone has a name."
Kairo looked away.
"…Not anymore."
A pause.
Then—
She spoke again.
"I'm Aira."
The name felt… different.
Soft.
Real.
Alive.
"…Aira," Kairo repeated quietly.
The word left his mouth before he could stop it.
Something New
For the first time—
Kairo felt something unfamiliar.
Not anger.
Not coldness.
Something else.
And it made him uncomfortable.
The Mission Returns
A voice echoed in his mind.
Kill the target.
Complete the mission.
No hesitation.
His grip tightened again.
The blade lifted slightly.
Aira noticed.
But she didn't move.
Didn't run.
"If you do this," she said softly…
"You won't be able to come back."
Silence.
"…Come back from what?" Kairo asked.
Her eyes met his.
"…From yourself."
The Breaking Point
Kairo's mind went quiet.
The world slowed.
The mission.
The target.
The Order.
Everything—
Faded.
Only her voice remained.
From yourself…
The Interruption
Then—
A presence.
Cold.
Sharp.
Familiar.
Kairo's eyes widened slightly.
Behind Aira—
A shadow appeared.
"…You're late," a calm voice said.
Aira turned.
Confused.
But Kairo already knew.
Three.
No More Time
"Well," Three said, stepping forward.
"This is disappointing."
His eyes moved between them.
"You hesitated."
Silence.
Then—
He looked at Aira.
"…So this is the reason."
Kairo stepped forward instantly.
Positioning himself between them.
"…Don't touch her."
The words came out cold.
Sharp.
Final.
A Line Crossed
Three stopped.
Then—
He smiled.
"…Now I understand."
A pause.
"You've become weak."
Kairo's eyes didn't change.
But his voice did.
"…Leave."
Three tilted his head slightly.
"Or what?"
Silence.
The air tightened.
Danger rising.
End of Chapter 13
Kairo stood in front of Aira.
Protecting her.
Against one of the most dangerous assassins in the Order.
And for the first time—
He made a choice.
Not as a weapon.
But as a human.
Cliffhanger:
Kairo just chose to protect Aira… but now he must face Three—and this time, there will be no holding back.
