Chapter 5 - Chapter-5 The One Who Knows

The door creaked as it opened.

A faint scent of incense drifted out, mixing with the cold air. The inside of the building was dim, lit only by soft lantern light that flickered along wooden walls covered in paper seals.

Kuroshin Rei stepped in first.

Aika followed closely behind.

The moment Rei crossed the threshold—

He felt it.

A pressure.

Not heavy.

But deep.

Like something unseen had just noticed him.

"…So this is the boundary," Rei muttered.

"Yeah," Aika replied. "And this place… isn't just a house."

Rei glanced around.

The shadows here weren't normal.

They didn't move wildly like before.

They were… calm.

Watching.

Observing.

"…They're quieter," he said.

Aika nodded.

"Because they're being controlled."

That word again.

Controlled.

Before Rei could ask more—

A voice echoed from deeper inside.

"You brought him."

Old.

Calm.

But powerful.

Aika straightened instantly.

"…Yes."

Rei's eyes narrowed slightly.

From the darkness ahead, footsteps approached.

Slow.

Measured.

Then—

A figure emerged into the lantern light.

An old man.

Long white hair tied loosely behind his back. Sharp eyes that seemed to see far more than they should. He wore traditional robes, marked with faded symbols.

But what stood out the most—

Was the way the shadows around him bent.

Not aggressively.

But respectfully.

Rei felt it immediately.

"…You're strong," he said quietly.

The old man stopped a few steps away.

His gaze locked onto Rei.

Silent.

Unblinking.

Then—

"…Interesting," he murmured.

Aika stepped forward.

"Master, this is—"

"I know who he is."

She froze.

Rei didn't.

"…Then explain," Rei said. "What am I?"

The old man's lips curved slightly.

"Straight to the point. Good."

He turned, walking slowly past them.

"Follow me."

Aika gestured slightly.

"Come on."

Rei hesitated for a brief moment.

Then followed.

They entered a larger room.

At the center, a low wooden table sat surrounded by talismans, scrolls, and strange markings carved into the floor.

The old man sat down calmly.

Rei and Aika remained standing.

"…Sit," the man said.

Aika obeyed immediately.

Rei followed after a second.

Silence filled the room.

The lantern light flickered.

Then—

The old man spoke.

"You were born with it."

Rei's eyes sharpened.

"…With what?"

"The Void."

Aika glanced at Rei.

He didn't react outwardly.

But inside—

Something stirred.

"…That name again," Rei said.

"It is not a name," the man replied. "It is your nature."

Rei frowned.

"…Explain properly."

The old man's gaze deepened.

"There are many who can see Yokai. Some who can fight them. A rare few who can control spiritual energy."

A pause.

Then—

"And then… there are anomalies."

The air grew colder.

"Beings that stand between worlds. Not fully human. Not fully spirit."

Aika's expression changed.

"…You mean—"

"Yes," the man said calmly.

Then he looked directly at Rei.

"You are one of them."

Silence.

Rei's fingers tightened slightly.

"…That's not possible."

"It already happened," the old man replied.

Aika looked between them.

"…Wait," she said, "are you saying Rei is—"

"A vessel," the man finished.

The word hit harder than expected.

Rei's voice lowered.

"…For what?"

The old man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached out and placed a small charm on the table.

It began to glow faintly.

"The Void is not just power," he said. "It is existence."

The shadows in the room shifted slightly.

Responding.

"It is the absence of everything… and the potential for anything."

Rei stared at the charm.

"…You're speaking in riddles."

The old man gave a faint smile.

"Then let me simplify it."

His voice dropped.

"There is something inside you."

Aika's breath caught slightly.

"And it is not human."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Rei looked down at his hand.

"…So what?" he said. "You expect me to believe there's some monster inside me?"

"No," the man replied calmly.

"I expect you to accept it."

That hit differently.

Rei's jaw tightened.

"…I didn't choose this."

"No one does."

The lantern flickered again.

Aika leaned forward slightly.

"…Master," she said, "if what you're saying is true… then what happened last night—"

"Was only the beginning."

Her expression darkened.

"…Meaning?"

The old man's eyes shifted back to Rei.

"You lost control once."

A pause.

"It will happen again."

Rei didn't look away.

"…Then I'll control it."

The man's gaze sharpened.

"You believe that?"

"Yes."

Confidence.

Or stubbornness.

Maybe both.

The old man chuckled softly.

"…Very well."

He reached beside him and picked up a small object.

A blade.

Short.

Simple.

But covered in intricate markings.

He placed it on the table between them.

"Then prove it."

Rei's eyes flickered slightly.

"…What is this?"

"A limiter," the man said. "A tool used by hunters to suppress spiritual power."

Aika's eyes widened.

"…Wait—Master, that's—"

"Dangerous?" he interrupted. "Yes."

He looked at Rei again.

"If you truly wish to control the Void…"

His voice grew sharper.

"Then you must first survive it."

Silence.

Rei stared at the blade.

He could feel it.

Even without touching it.

It resisted him.

Rejected him.

"…What do I do?" Rei asked.

The old man's answer was simple.

"Pick it up."

Aika immediately shook her head.

"Rei, don't. That thing reacts violently to unstable energy—"

Rei ignored her.

His eyes stayed on the blade.

For a moment…

He hesitated.

Then—

He reached out.

The second his fingers touched it—

The room exploded with energy.

Aika flinched.

"Rei!"

Darkness surged violently from his body, clashing against the blade's light.

The markings ignited.

The shadows screamed.

Rei's grip tightened instinctively as pain shot through his arm.

"…Tch—!"

The blade resisted.

Pushed back.

Trying to reject him.

But Rei didn't let go.

His eyes darkened.

"…I'm not… losing again…"

The shadows around him roared, rising uncontrollably.

The entire building trembled slightly.

Aika stood up, panic rising.

"Master, stop this!"

But the old man didn't move.

He simply watched.

"…Good," he murmured.

Rei's body shook.

The darkness surged wildly, threatening to consume everything.

But then—

Something changed.

Instead of exploding outward—

The shadows slowed.

Compressed.

Forced back.

Rei's breathing steadied slightly.

His grip stabilized.

And slowly…

Very slowly…

The light and darkness began to balance.

Aika stared.

"…No way…"

The blade stopped resisting.

The glow softened.

And for the first time—

The room became still again.

Rei exhaled sharply, his arm trembling slightly.

But he didn't drop the blade.

The old man smiled faintly.

"…So you can resist it."

Rei looked up.

"…Barely."

"That is enough," the man replied.

Aika let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

"…You're insane," she muttered.

Rei glanced at her.

"…You're still here."

She smirked slightly.

"Obviously."

A brief silence followed.

Then—

The old man spoke again.

"This confirms it."

Rei's attention returned to him.

"…Confirms what?"

The man's eyes darkened slightly.

"That the Void has awakened."

Aika's expression froze.

"…Awakened?"

The old man nodded slowly.

"And once it awakens…"

A pause.

"It begins to call others."

Rei's grip on the blade tightened.

"…Others?"

The lantern flickered again.

But this time—

The shadows didn't move.

They listened.

Because somewhere…

Far beyond the city—

Something had already heard that call.

And it was coming.

The truth had begun to surface.

And with it…

Something far more dangerous than shadows.
