Chapter Four: Raven's Alley
Arthur traversed the labyrinthine thoroughfares of Greymoor. A suffocating, dense fog strangled visibility to a mere handful of meters, a fortunate variable that facilitated his evasion of the nocturnal constabulary patrols. It required an hour of sustained, calculated walking to reach the derelict industrial sector corresponding to the coordinates of "Raven's Alley."
Behind the crumbling brickwork of a defunct textile mill, he located a narrow passage terminating at a heavily rusted iron door. Two formidable figures guarded the threshold. The first cradled a steam-pressured rifle; the second absentmindedly wrapped a heavy iron chain around his scarred knuckles.
Arthur advanced, his pace rhythmic and unyielding.
"Halt," the rifle-bearing sentry growled, his voice a gravelly obstruction to the path. "Dead end, mate."
Arthur instantaneously computed the tactical scenario: Forcible breach is a statistical impossibility. Even if I eliminate these initial variables, the probability of an overwhelming secondary force within is near absolute.
He offered no verbal response. Sliding a pale hand into his overcoat pocket, he extracted the copper token bearing the insignia of the gear and the unblinking eye. With chilling detachment, he elevated it to the sentry's eye level. The guard's gaze narrowed, flicking from the token to the dark, blood-stained surgeon's coat Arthur wore. Slowly, he nodded to his compatriot.
With a groan of protesting hinges, the second man hauled the heavy iron door ajar.
"Step inside, Gear-man. See that you don't stir up trouble."
Arthur passed between them, uttering no acknowledgment. Beyond the threshold lay a descent of damp stone stairs, plunging into the subterranean belly of the city. Upon reaching the nadir, a sprawling network of catacombs unfurled before him, bathed in the sickly, viridescent glow of gas lamps. This was the Black Market. The subterranean bazaar teemed with frenetic activity; makeshift stalls showcased unnatural wares: vital organs suspended in cloudy glass jars, esoteric weaponry, and strange flora emitting pungent, corrosive chemical odors.
Arthur surveyed the subterranean ecosystem with neutral, calculating eyes. This is the nexus where individuals possessing these anomalous forces congregate. Yet, my internal database regarding the mechanics of this world remains empty. To operate in ignorance is a fatal error.
Bypassing the crowded, clamoring stalls, he navigated toward a dilapidated tavern recessed into an alcove. He situated himself upon a splintered wooden stool before a barkeep meticulously wiping a filthy glass.
"What's your poison?" the barkeep inquired with practiced apathy.
Arthur produced three silver shillings, aligning them precisely upon the scarred wood.
"Data," Arthur replied, his voice a quiet, flat monotone. "I require a comprehensive summation of the power dynamics. The dominant Lodges, and the active Paths currently operating within this metropolis."
The barkeep stared at the silver, then smoothly swept it into his palm. He leaned across the bar, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur. "You either just crawled out of the womb, friend, or you lost your bloody mind in one of their experiments. In Greymoor, the 'Cogwork' Lodge maintains a stranglehold over the Paths belonging to the Inevitability of Change. However, there's also the 'Ash' Lodge, constantly scouring the gutters for acolytes aligned with the Inevitability of Void."
Arthur's intellect instantaneously isolated the critical parameters: Paths... Inevitability of Change... Inevitability of Void."Do you vend literature or documentation detailing the foundational mechanics of these Paths?" Arthur demanded directly.
The barkeep paused, a wry smile touching his lips. "You truly are a blank slate, aren't you? To ascend to a new Sequence, you must know its designation and the precise alchemical formula to synthesize the Breakthrough Pill. Listen closely: the Sequences progress in reverse numerical order, from the weakest foundation at Sequence Seven, culminating at the apex, Sequence One. I might be persuaded to assist you in identifying your next Sequence. Tell me, what Path and Sequence are you currently anchored to?" He paused, adding, "For a fee, naturally."
Arthur reviewed the fragments of data. The journal explicitly stated his intention to breach the Sixth Sequence of the Aberrant Path: 'The Pattern Breaker'.
"The Aberrant Path, Sequence Seven," Arthur stated. "Provide me with the requisite data for Sequence Six, and Sequence Seven, if you possess it."
The barkeep scrutinized him. Why did he omit the title of Sequence Seven? Did the poor bastard truly get his brains scrambled in a laboratory? Ah well, coin is coin. He withdrew a sheet of parchment and began to write. The scratching of his quill seemed to drag on endlessly. Finally, he folded the parchment. "One gold sovereign. For that, you secure the complete codices for both Sequence Seven and Six. A bargain, well below the current market rate."
Arthur leveled a look of cold skepticism at the man. When the barkeep's expression remained fixed, Arthur produced the gold coin, sliding it across the wood. Securing the parchment, he exited the tavern. He navigated the tunnels until he located a secluded, unoccupied courtyard. Settling onto a cold stone bench, he unfolded the document and began to read.
Codex of the Inevitability of Change — The Aberrant Path
Sequence Seven: The Glitch Essence: The capability to introduce microscopic errors into the established physical and biological parameters of the immediate environment.
Core Mechanics:
Minor Deviation: The ability to execute slight interference upon the trajectory of kinetic objects in motion. (e.g., Deflecting the path of a projectile or a descending blade by a margin of inches to negate fatal impact).
Localized Distortion: Temporarily altering the physical properties of a small, inanimate object for a duration of mere seconds. (e.g., Coercing an iron padlock to adopt the fragility of glass, or forcing a rigid plank of wood to exhibit the elasticity of rubber).
Physiological Side-Effect (Mutation): The Ascendant's vessel begins to respond to trauma in an illogical manner; lacerations and wounds mend by leaving scars in the shape of anomalous geometric patterns.
Sequence Six: The Pattern Breaker Essence: The capacity to shatter the anticipated, logical rules of matter and temporarily impose an alternate, contradictory reality.
Core Mechanics:
Logical Dissonance: The forced amalgamation of two naturally opposing elements to manifest a novel physical reality. (e.g., Coercing water to combust, or commanding blood to calcify into the density of metal upon exposure to oxygen).
Structural Reversal: Forcing a shattered substance or collapsed architecture to temporarily revert to its original, unbroken pattern for a duration not exceeding sixty seconds. (e.g., Reassembling the fragmented splinters of a destroyed door to form a solid barrier, before it inevitably collapses back into ruin once the duration expires).
Formula of Ascension (The Sequence Six Elixir)
Warning: Consumption of the Elixir prior to achieving absolute "Total Assimilation" of Sequence Seven will trigger a catastrophic structural collapse of the Ascendant's vessel (Spontaneous Hemorrhagic Detonation).
Reagents:
Primary Essence: The pituitary gland of a Mutated Soot-Macaque.
Catalysts:
15 grams of oxidized iron filings, harvested from a cogwheel operating in a reversed rotation.
5 drops of unadulterated mercury.
Bone ash, specifically extracted from the skeletal remains of an individual born with a severe congenital deformity.
Alchemical Process and Ritual: The gland must be thoroughly pulverized and amalgamated with the iron filings, mercury, and bone ash within a copper crucible. The concoction is to be simmered in distilled water over a low flame until all liquid evaporates, leaving behind a solid, thumb-sized pill possessing a pulsating, ashen hue.
Ritual Condition of Consumption: The pill must be ingested within an environment currently experiencing a "sustained logical glitch." (Recommended Condition: Enclosed spatial environments).
