Chapter 65 - The Child Behind The Heart (Part - I)

The sound did not come from the sky.

It came from beneath the earth.

A breath.

Slow.

Deep.

Ancient.

It passed through the broken chamber like a living wind, though there was no wind anywhere.

The great Heart had cracked.

Its seven chains had fallen.

And the darkness beneath it had opened its eyes.

For several moments, nobody moved.

Tez stood frozen before the shattered crystal.

His hand was still joined with Vaidehi's.

The light from their two Seals had almost disappeared, leaving only faint white lines across their palms.

In front of them stood the third child.

Or what looked like a child.

He was perhaps twelve or thirteen years old.

His clothes were torn and covered in dust, but they were not like the clothes worn by people of the present age. They looked ancient—older than the cities, older than the temples, perhaps even older than the Guardian order itself.

His face was pale.

His dark hair fell across his forehead.

And his eyes...

Tez could not look away from them.

They were his eyes.

Not similar.

Not close.

His.

The same deep brown eyes.

The same sharp shape.

Even the small mark near the left eyebrow was there.

Tez slowly stepped forward.

The boy watched him.

Then he smiled.

It was not an evil smile.

That made it worse.

It was the smile of someone who had been waiting for a very long time.

"Brother," the boy whispered.

Tez's heart stopped.

Vaidehi tightened her grip on his hand.

"Tez..." she whispered.

Tez did not answer.

He could not.

The word had struck something buried deep inside him.

Not a memory.

Something older than memory.

A feeling.

A strange warmth.

A courtyard filled with sunlight.

A small hand holding his.

A boy laughing.

A woman calling his name.

And then—

Fire.

Tez stumbled backward.

Devadatta caught his shoulder.

"Tez!"

"I..." Tez breathed heavily. "I know him."

Everyone stared at him.

Arvind's face had gone completely white.

Maitreyi looked from Tez to the child.

"No," she whispered.

Arvind closed his eyes.

For the first time since Tez had found him behind the black stone door, the man looked afraid.

Not worried.

Not troubled.

Afraid.

Tez noticed it.

"You know him."

Arvind did not answer.

"You know him!" Tez shouted.

His voice shook the chamber.

The child lowered his head.

The broken Heart behind him gave a faint pulse.

Dhum.

The ground moved.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

A crack raced across the stone floor.

Aarav pulled Bhaskar away from it.

"We need to move!" Aarav shouted.

Another crack appeared.

Then another.

Kaalvan had begun to die.

The ancient city that had survived for ages was finally losing its last strength.

The towers above them began collapsing one after another.

A deep roar passed through the tunnels.

Maitreyi looked upward.

"The city is breaking."

"Because the Heart is broken?" Bhaskar asked.

"No," Maitreyi said.

Her eyes moved toward the darkness behind the child.

"Because something has been released."

The darkness moved.

Only slightly.

But Tez saw it.

A black line crawled along the broken wall.

It was not smoke.

It was not shadow.

It moved like a living thing.

And wherever it passed, the stone lost its carvings.

Names disappeared.

Symbols vanished.

Faces carved into ancient pillars became blank.

The Shadow was eating the memories of Kaalvan.

Tez watched in horror as a name disappeared from the wall.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

"The city is forgetting itself," Maitreyi whispered.

A sudden scream came from somewhere above.

Then another.

People were running through the distant streets.

But their voices were strange.

Confused.

Some called out names.

Some asked where they were.

Some were crying because they could no longer remember why they were crying.

The First Shadow had escaped the chamber.

And it was spreading.

Arvind turned toward the exit.

"We leave now."

Tez did not move.

He pointed at the child.

"What about him?"

Arvind's face tightened.

"He comes with us."

The boy looked at Arvind.

For the first time, his expression changed.

There was anger in his eyes.

"You left me here."

Arvind stopped.

The words were quiet.

But they struck him harder than any weapon.

"I had no choice," Arvind said.

"You always had a choice."

The boy took one step forward.

Arvind's hand moved toward his sword.

Tez noticed.

"Don't."

Arvind looked at him.

"That isn't the boy you remember."

Tez's breath caught.

"What do you mean?"

The boy smiled again.

"I remember you."

Tez stared at him.

"Who are you?"

The child opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the chamber shook violently.

A huge piece of the ceiling broke free.

Aarav pushed Bhaskar aside.

"Move!"

The stone crashed down.

Dust filled the chamber.

Vaidehi pulled Tez toward the doorway.

"Tez!"

He looked back.

Through the dust, the child was still standing.

Completely still.

The falling stones seemed to avoid him.

The black mist curled around his feet.

And behind him, the broken Heart pulsed again.

Dhum.

The child raised his hand.

The entire chamber became silent.

Even the collapsing stones seemed to freeze for one impossible moment.

Then the boy looked directly at Tez.

"Don't run from me."

Tez felt a sharp pain in his head.

The world disappeared.

---

He was small.

Very small.

Perhaps five years old.

He was standing in a forest.

The trees were enormous.

Sunlight fell through the leaves in golden lines.

Someone was laughing.

Tez turned.

A boy was running toward him.

"Tez!"

The child was smiling.

Tez smiled back.

"Wait!"

The boy stopped.

He turned around.

"You're too slow."

Tez laughed.

"I'll catch you."

"You never do."

Tez ran.

The memory changed.

They were sitting beside a stone pool.

A little girl was sitting between them.

Vaidehi.

She was younger.

Perhaps four or five.

She was holding a small flower.

The three children were laughing.

Then a woman appeared.

Tez's mother.

And beside her stood Vaidehi's mother.

Their faces were worried.

Tez's mother knelt before the children.

"Listen to me carefully."

The memory began shaking.

The children's laughter faded.

Tez looked at the other boy.

"Who are you?"

The boy looked at him.

And suddenly—

His face changed.

Not into another face.

Into Tez's own face.

Tez gasped.

The memory shattered.

---

He returned to the chamber.

He fell to his knees.

Vaidehi knelt beside him.

"Tez!"

He struggled to breathe.

"I saw..."

"What?"

"Us."

Vaidehi's eyes widened.

"Us?"

Tez nodded.

"You were there."

Vaidehi's face went pale.

"And another boy."

The child stood several steps away.

He was watching them.

Vaidehi slowly turned toward him.

Something in her expression changed.

She was remembering too.

A small garden.

Three children.

A promise.

A stone.

And a fourth presence standing behind them.

Something without a face.

Something that had whispered to her when she was little.

Open the door.

Vaidehi pressed both hands against her head.

"No..."

Tez caught her.

"What did you remember?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"He was there."

"Who?"

She looked at the child.

"Him."

The child smiled.

"I told you," he said softly.

"You forgot me."

A violent tremor passed through Kaalvan.

The chamber wall split open.

Beyond it was not another room.

It was darkness.

Pure darkness.

And inside that darkness, hundreds of pale faces appeared.

Faces of people whose memories had been consumed.

They opened their mouths together.

No words came.

Only whispers.

Thousands of whispers.

Remember...

Remember...

Remember...

Maitreyi stepped backward.

"The Shadow is using the memories of the dead."

"No," Arvind said.

His voice was barely audible.

"It is using the memories of everyone."

The darkness suddenly rushed toward them.

Arvind drew his sword.

"Behind me!"

He struck.

The blade passed through the black mist.

Nothing happened.

The Shadow laughed.

Not loudly.

Almost gently.

Then the darkness changed direction.

It moved toward Vaidehi.

Her pendant began glowing.

White-blue light burst from it.

The Shadow stopped.

For the first time, it seemed surprised.

The child turned toward Vaidehi.

"You still have it."

Vaidehi looked at her pendant.

"What?"

"Her gift."

"Whose?"

The child looked at her with an expression almost like pity.

"Your mother's."

Vaidehi's breath caught.

The boy took another step.

"She gave it to you before she forgot."

"Forgot what?"

The boy looked at Tez.

Then at Vaidehi.

Then at the broken Heart.

"Everything."

The white light around Vaidehi grew stronger.

A memory flashed through her mind.

Her mother kneeling beside her.

A small pendant being placed around her neck.

A trembling hand touching her forehead.

And words:

"If you forget him, don't fear."

Another voice—Tez's mother.

"The Heart will remember for them."

Then her mother's voice again.

"But if he remembers before the right time..."

The memory broke.

Vaidehi cried out.

"What happens?"

The child answered.

"The Shadow remembers too."

Silence.

Tez slowly stood.

He looked at Arvind.

"What is he?"

Arvind did not answer.

"Father."

Nothing.

"Tell me."

Arvind's eyes were fixed on the child.

Finally, he whispered:

"He was the first."

"The first what?"

"The first child the Shadow touched."

Tez's heart began beating faster.

Arvind continued.

"And the first child the Heart tried to save."

Tez looked at the boy again.

The child was smiling.

But this time, there was sadness in his smile.

Tez suddenly noticed something.

Around the boy's wrist was a thin scar.

A circular scar.

The same shape as the mark that had appeared on Tez's palm.

Tez slowly looked at his own hand.

The black mark was glowing.

Vaidehi's mark was glowing too.

Then—

The child's scar began glowing.

Three lights.

One black.

One white.

One somewhere between them.

They connected.

A symbol appeared in the air.

A symbol Tez had never seen in any Guardian temple.

Three circles joined around a single point.

Maitreyi stared at it.

Her lips parted.

"No..."

Tez looked at her.

"You know this symbol."

She shook her head.

"No one was supposed to know it."

"What is it?"

Maitreyi's voice trembled.

"The symbol that was erased from every Guardian record."

"Why?"

She looked at the child.

"Because there were never supposed to be three."

The child smiled.

"There were always three."

The ground suddenly split beneath him.

A column of black light rose from the broken Heart.

The child did not fall.

He stood inside it.

His eyes turned completely dark.

And when he spoke, his voice was no longer that of a child.

It was the voice of the First Shadow.

"You have spent your whole life asking who you are, Tez."

Tez froze.

The voice continued.

"Now ask a better question."

The black light grew.

"Why were you brought back?"

Tez could not breathe.

The Shadow whispered:

"Because you were never forgotten."

The child looked at him.

And then he said something that made Arvind drop his sword.

A name.

A name Tez had never heard in his present life.

Yet the moment he heard it—

His entire body remembered.

The name came from the darkness.

And somewhere deep inside Tez's mind, a child's voice answered it.

"I remember."

Then the chamber exploded with light.

And for the first time, Tez saw the face of the boy he had forgotten.

It was his own.

But older.

And covered in the marks of the Shadow.
