Chapter 8 - Part 8 – Finding Peace

The city felt the same as always, loud and crowded, but something inside Mika had changed, something quieter, something steadier. She walked to school without overthinking every step, without that constant weight pressing on her chest. It wasn't gone completely… but it wasn't controlling her anymore.

"Mika!" Akira's voice called out as she ran toward her, slightly out of breath.Mika turned and smiled, a real one this time. "You're late again.""I woke up late," Akira laughed softly, then paused. "You look… different.""Different how?""Calmer," Akira said. "Like you're not fighting yourself anymore."Mika thought about it for a second. "Maybe I'm just tired of fighting."Akira smiled. "That's still progress."

They walked together, not perfectly like before, but honestly this time.No pretending. No hidden feelings.

Later, Mika sat in the library, her notebook open again, but this time the pages were filled."You've been writing a lot," Leo said as he sat across from her."It helps," Mika replied."With what?""With hearing myself," she said softly.

Leo nodded, watching her quietly."You seem lighter," he said."I'm not completely okay," Mika admitted. "But I'm not lost anymore either.""That's enough," Leo replied.

Mika looked at him, her voice gentle. "Thank you… for staying, for listening, for not trying to fix me."Leo gave a small smile. "You didn't need fixing, Mika. You needed space to understand yourself."

Mika closed her notebook slowly. For once, her thoughts felt… clear.

That afternoon, she walked alone near the park, the same place where she once felt like everything was falling apart. Now, it felt quieter. Not empty.Just peaceful.

She sat on a bench, looking at the sky.

"Hey."

She froze slightly at the familiar voice.San.

She turned slowly. He stood there, hands in his pockets, a small smile on his face, not as bright as before, but real.

"Hi," Mika said softly.

There was a small silence between them. Not awkward.Just… careful.

"You look better," San said."I feel better," Mika replied.

San nodded. "That's good… that's really good."

Mika looked at him. "How are you?"

San shrugged lightly. "I'm okay… I guess I'm learning too.""Learning what?""That sometimes… you can give everything and still not be the one," he said, smiling slightly.

Mika's chest tightened. "San…""It's okay," he said gently. "I meant what I said before… I don't regret it."

There was a pause."But I needed to step back," he continued. "Not because I stopped caring… but because I needed to care about myself too."

Mika nodded slowly. "I understand."

San looked at her for a moment."And I'm glad you chose what was right for you," he added.

Mika's eyes softened. "You deserved someone who chooses you the same way."

San laughed quietly. "Yeah… maybe someday."

There was a small silence again, but this time it felt lighter.

"Friends?" San asked, holding out his hand slightly.Mika looked at it, then smiled gently and took it. "Friends."

And for the first time, it didn't hurt.

San stepped back. "Take care, Mika.""You too, San."

He turned and walked away, not broken this time… just moving forward.

Mika watched him go, her heart feeling full in a different way.Not heavy. Not empty.

Just… at peace.

That evening, Mika stood on the rooftop with Leo, the city lights stretching endlessly around them."It's still loud," Mika said, looking out.Leo stood beside her. "Does it bother you?"She shook her head. "No… because my mind isn't louder anymore."

Leo looked at her, his expression calm. "That means you've found something important."

Mika smiled softly."I found myself," she said.

Leo gently held her hand."And you didn't lose it again," he replied.

Mika looked at the city one last time, then closed her eyes for a moment.

"I'm still healing," she whispered. "But I'm not breaking anymore."

And this time—

she truly meant it.
