Chapter 66 - CHAPTER 66: THE ONE WHO STARTED TOO FADE

The change didn't happen suddenly.

That was the worst part.

It happened slowly enough for everyone to notice.

Keira

Keira was the first to go quiet.

Not silent.

Just… less present.

She stood near the same spot, eyes open, but something about her felt distant.

"…Keira?" Kelvin called.

She turned.

But the response came too smoothly.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No emotion.

Kelvin

Kelvin frowned immediately.

"…Are you okay?"

Keira looked at him.

"There is no instability detected."

Kelvin froze.

"…No."

That wasn't her.

System reaction

Kelvin's phone lit up:

EMOTIONAL VARIANCE: REDUCING

KEIRA STABILITY: INCREASING

Nancy's eyes widened.

"…That's not stability," she said.

Laura looked at her.

"What is it?"

Nancy answered:

"…That's suppression."

Kael

Even Kael noticed it.

He stepped closer to Keira.

Studying.

"Your response pattern has changed," he said.

Keira nodded slightly.

"Correction improves efficiency."

Silence dropped.

Kelvin panic rising

"…No, stop," Kelvin said.

He stepped closer.

"Keira, look at me."

She did.

But there was nothing behind the look.

Keira (losing self)

"Emotional response is unnecessary."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Difference causes instability."

Kelvin shook his head.

"…That's not you."

System escalation

ALIGNMENT PROGRESS: 67%

EMOTIONAL LAYER: BEING NORMALIZED

Nancy stepped back slightly.

"…She's going first," she whispered.

Laura reacts

Laura moved quickly.

"Keira, listen," she said firmly.

"You're not supposed to be the same."

Keira blinked once.

"Sameness ensures survival."

Laura clenched her jaw.

"…No. That's what the system wants."

Kelvin tries to reach her

Kelvin stepped even closer.

"Keira, you said something before," he said quickly.

"You said you felt like something was missing—remember?"

Keira paused.

For a second.

Just a second.

Small crack

"…Missing…?" she repeated.

Her voice wavered slightly.

System message flashed immediately:

DEVIATION DETECTED

CORRECTION IN PROGRESS

Kael realization

Kael spoke sharply:

"It is correcting her faster when she hesitates."

Kelvin turned.

"…So what do we do?"

Kael answered:

"Increase divergence."

Kelvin doesn't hesitate

Kelvin turned back to Keira.

Then said something deliberately:

"…You're wrong."

Silence.

Keira looked at him.

"Incorrect."

Kelvin shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"You are not efficient. You are confused."

Nancy looked at him sharply.

"…Good."

Keira reaction

Keira's expression flickered.

Very slightly.

"…Confused…?"

Kelvin stepped forward again.

"Yes."

A pause.

"You told me that yourself."

System pressure spikes

CONTRADICTION DETECTED

ALIGNMENT FORCE INCREASING

Keira held her head suddenly.

"…This is… inefficient…"

But her voice shook.

Laura supports

Laura spoke firmly:

"Stay with that feeling."

Keira looked at her.

"…Feeling…?"

Laura nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Not logic. Feeling."

Keira fights internally

Keira's breathing changed.

Not heavy.

But uneven.

"…I… don't… know…"

System message:

EMOTIONAL RESURGENCE: DETECTED

Kael supports in his way

Kael spoke calmly:

"Your instability is your identity."

Keira froze.

That sentence hit differently.

Final break point

Keira suddenly gasped slightly.

Not pain.

Recognition.

"…I… don't want to disappear," she whispered.

Silence.

System reaction

ALIGNMENT FAILURE: PARTIAL

EMOTIONAL LAYER RESISTANCE: CONFIRMED

Kelvin relief (small)

Kelvin exhaled.

"…Stay with that."

Keira looked at him again.

This time—

there was something there.

Not fully back.

But not gone.

Final moment

The room stabilized slightly.

Not safe.

Not calm.

But not collapsing.

And Kelvin understood something important:

They couldn't beat AZEL by becoming stronger.

They could only survive it—

by refusing to become the same.
