Chapter 20 - Nine Against One

The arena didn't just grow cold; it became a vacuum of intent. Nine of the world's most powerful "Variables"—Architects and Sovereigns alike—shifted their stances, their eyes locked on the boy with the Zero. The Bounty of the Ghost had turned a trial of survival into a literal gold rush.

"I don't want to kill you, Kael," the High-Tier Magus said, his floating runic rings beginning to spin with a high-pitched whine. "But the System is offering me back my life. 10,000 points is enough to secure my legacy for another century."

Kael didn't look at the Magus. He looked at Seren Vale. Her silver rapier was shaking, the tip dipping toward the obsidian floor. She was the "True Hero," the one the script favored, yet she was currently staring at a "Bounty" that violated every heroic tenet she had ever been taught.

"Are you going to join them, Seren?" Kael asked, his voice a clinical whisper that bypassed the roar of the Magus's rising mana. "Are you going to follow the new prompt? 'Kill the Anomaly, Reclaim the Lead'?"

Seren didn't answer. She closed her eyes.

The Horror in the Static

"Enough talk!" a massive warrior with an Index of 15,000 roared, lunging forward with a warhammer that could crack a mountain.

Kael didn't move. He reached into the Heart of a Forgotten City still held in his left hand and pulsed his Narrative Static.

[ Skill Activation: Ghost Data — 'Terrain Corrupt' ]

The floor didn't just break; it became non-existent. The obsidian marble beneath the warrior's feet pixelated into grey cubes, revealing a yawning abyss of white static. The warrior's momentum carried him directly into the hole. Because he was "important" to the System, the deletion logic treated him like a priority file—it swallowed him whole.

[ Credit Stolen: 1,500 Index Points Devoured ]

"You're fighting with the wrong physics," Kael said, his violet eyes glowing with the raw data he was bleeding from the Heart. "In the graveyard of the script, your Index isn't a shield. It's a target."

The Architect's Wrath

High above, the golden mask of the Architect rippled in fury. The System didn't like being used against itself.

[ System Intervention: 'Correction Protocols' ]

[ Environment: Forced Stabilization ]

The white abyss beneath Kael's feet was forcibly overwritten with solid ground, pinning him in place. The remaining seven participants saw their opening. They attacked simultaneously—a storm of fire, steel, and golden energy designed to incinerate the "Zero" where he stood.

"Now!" the Magus screamed, releasing a beam of concentrated Aether.

Kael slammed the Heart into his own chest, directly over the Seed of a Failed Protagonist.

[ Evolution Progress: 35% — Stage 2: 'Event Thief' ]

[ Emergency Skill: Narrative Redirection ]

The incoming attacks didn't hit Kael. They hit the "space" around him and were pulled into the Seed. Kael's body arched, his skin turning translucent as the Index points of seven powerful entities were forcibly drained into his hollow core.

"Lira, close your eyes," Kael choked out, his voice now layered with the screams of the deleted souls within him.

The violet flare that erupted from Kael wasn't a hero's light. It was the scream of a broken world.
