Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE: A DANGEROUS SECRET

The words hung in the air like a warning. "I'mthe reason you shouldn't be here." Elara's heart pounded as she stared at Lucien. Nothing about this felt normal anymore. Not the cold air, not the shadows, not him. "What does that mean?" she asked, her voice unsteady. Lucien didn't answer immediately. His eyes flicked toward the darkness behind him—as if making sure the others were gone. "They're watching," he said quietly. "And if they think you matter to me…" He stopped. Elara swallowed. "If they think I matter… what?" His jaw tightened. "They'll use you."

Elara shook her head slowly. "Use me for what? Lucien, stop speaking in riddles!" Silence. Then he stepped closer. Too close. Her breath caught as she felt it again—That unnatural cold. "You need to leave Ravencrest," he said. "No." The word came out before she could stop it. His eyes narrowed slightly. "No?" he repeated. "I'm not leaving until you tell me the truth," she said, her voice stronger now. "All of it."

For a moment, it looked like he might walk away. But instead… He did something worse. He looked straight at her—and let the mask fall. His eyes darkened. Not just in color… but in something deeper. Something hungry. "I don't eat like you," he said quietly. Elara froze. "I don't sleep like you. I don't live like you." A step closer. "I survive on blood." Her world tilted.

"No…" she whispered, shaking her head. "That's not possible." Lucien's expression didn't change. "It is." Her eyes dropped to his lips… then back to his eyes. Every strange thing suddenly made sense. The cold skin, the silence, the way he disappeared. Her voice broke. "You're a… monster?" Something flickered across his face. Pain!

"If that's what you want to call me," he said. Elara stepped back, her heart racing. But she didn't run. Even now… she didn't run. Lucien noticed. "Why aren't you afraid?" he asked. "I am," she admitted. A pause. "But I'm more afraid of not understanding."

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then Lucien said something unexpected. "I've never wanted to hurt you." His voice was softer now. Almost human. Elara's chest tightened. "But you could," she said. Silence. Lucien didn't deny it.
