Chapter 93 - 093: The Invisible Siege

The silence in the hanging Elven village was not merely the absence of sound; it was a living entity lying in wait. Suddenly, without any auditory prelude or kinetic warning, the physical reality of the place began to distort.

The dwindling light, which had struggled to filter through the white fog clouds and the dense leafy canopy of the World Tree, began to recede slowly. It wasn't a natural withdrawal like the onset of dusk; rather, it seemed as though the "shadows" themselves had acquired mass and hunger, beginning to devour the very particles of light surrounding the square. The spaces between the lavish wooden houses morphed into pools of viscous darkness.

This photic asphyxiation coincided with a terrifying reaction from the surrounding network of black arrows. Thousands of arrows embedded in the walls, the bridges, and the great trunk began to vibrate with violent, synchronized mechanical intensity. The creaking was no longer faint; it escalated into a piercing hum, an ultrasonic wave that bypassed flesh to strike directly at the bone.

Dex felt as if needles of ice were being driven into his eardrums. He clutched his head with both hands, squeezing his eyes shut to fight off the vertigo assaulting his equilibrium. The "Phoenix Core" in his chest responded to this frequency threat with a defensive frenzy, pumping blood laden with golden heat to protect his brain from acoustic rupture, causing the veins in his neck to bulge and glow with a faint light.

Beside him, Lumia did not stand idle. The celestial girl, harboring the energy of "Void and Sky," understood that this hum was merely the overture to an all-out assault. She closed her eyes and, in a fluid motion, brought her palms together in front of her chest.

"Nebula Domain!" Lumia whispered. Her silver celestial aura erupted from her body like a newborn star, pushing out a wave of pure, crystalline light in an attempt to form a spherical protective shield around herself and Dex, aiming to purge the square of this creeping darkness.

However, the moment the silver light expanded just one meter beyond the perimeter of their bodies, it crashed into an invisible, solid wall. The aura did not expand freely as it usually did in the outside world; instead, it was met with a counter-pressure of equal force, and far greater mystery and antiquity. It was a pressure emanating from the very shadows enveloping the square, as if the darkness here possessed a will and density superior to light. Sparks of magical repulsion began to fly into the air where the silver light met the pitch-black void, emitting crackling sounds like the tearing of silk fabric.

"Don't move... and don't attack!" Dex shouted in a stern voice, fighting through the agony in his ears. He reached out with his rough hand and gripped Lumia's wrist tightly, forcing her to halt the flow of her celestial mana.

Lumia looked at him in shock, but Dex's eyes weren't fixed on her. He was staring with terrifying concentration downward, at the floor of the wooden platform and the glowing moss surrounding their feet.

The instant Lumia ceased radiating light, the blades of black razors, honed to a molecular edge and forged from solidified mana, began to protrude from the "nothingness" with agonizing slowness, piercing the moss mere millimeters from their ankles. Had Lumia continued to push her aura, or had Dex taken a single offensive step forward, these concealed blades would have severed their feet at the roots before they even registered their existence.

Then, the true nightmarish spectacle commenced.

The dense shadows pooling beneath the suspension bridges and in the corners of the abandoned houses began to writhe and condense. They detached from the surfaces, morphing into humanoid shapes. From the womb of this darkness, the Dark Elf warriors were born.

They appeared one after another, in a maddening silence. They weren't just soldiers; they were the artistic embodiment of murder. Their features were sharp and chiseled, as if carved from harsh volcanic rock, entirely devoid of empathy or human warmth. Their skin wasn't entirely black, but rather a dark, dusky hue leaning towards a deep nocturnal blue, absorbing whatever light remained in the vicinity. As for their eyes... they were narrow slits radiating a lethal, cold green gleam, the unblinking eyes of nocturnal predators.

They wore light armor that clung to their sleek physiques, masterfully woven from the hides of "Shadow Beasts", mythical creatures dwelling in the deepest layers of the abyss. The armor was designed to provide maximum flexibility while nullifying any friction noise. In the hands of each warrior rested a longbow, taller than a fully grown man, crafted from pliant black wood. The bowstrings were fully drawn back, nocking arrows whose tips dripped with black poison, aimed with mathematical precision at the vital points on Dex and Lumia's heads and chests.

But what pushed the scene beyond the realm of tactical terror and into the impossible were their "positioning points."

They weren't merely surrounding Dex on the flat ground. These were warriors who mocked the conventional laws of gravity and physics. Some stood with unnatural stability on the tips of branches so impossibly thin they could barely support the weight of a bird. Others stood "upside down," their feet clinging to the undersides of the suspension bridges, aiming their bows downwards. A third group was anchored to the vertical trunk of the World Tree at a perfect ninety-degree angle, standing on the sheer wood as if it were flat terrain.

They were everywhere, above them, below them, and all around them. A three-dimensional firing squad.

Even with Dex's senses pushed to the absolute peak of the (D+) rank, capable of detecting the heartbeat of an insect meters away, he hadn't sensed them until they had physically materialized.

And suddenly, before Dex could even assess an impossible escape route, time stopped.

He felt a biting cold graze the back of his neck, resting right above his spine. It wasn't cold air; it was the blade of a long, serrated dagger. The blade was so freezing that a drop of sweat sliding down Dex's neck turned to ice the instant it touched the metal, freezing the blood in his veins along with it.

How? When? Dex's analytical mind screamed.

He hadn't heard a single footstep behind him. He hadn't felt the displacement of air that accompanies the movement of any solid mass. He hadn't picked up on a single ripple of mana. This level of stealth and assassination wasn't just high skill; it was a magical art that surpassed the capabilities of the (B) rank by light-years. The person standing behind him, pressing death against his jugular vein, possessed no "presence" in the physical sense. He was merely an armed void.

"Now... we'll know the truth," Dex thought, forcing his muscles, tight as steel cables, to relax.

The Phoenix fires boiled beneath his skin like a restrained volcano, begging him to unleash a circular shockwave that would turn everything around him to ash. He could have done it; perhaps he could have incinerated the blade at his throat and dropped a few archers. But the strategic mind of the prisoner overpowered the savage instinct for survival. An explosion here meant certain death for him and Lumia beneath a downpour of thousands of arrows.

Very slowly, with a deliberate motion entirely devoid of hostility, Dex raised both hands in the air, moving them away from the hilt of his partially drawn short sword. He opened his palms to declare his total surrender of any intent to fight.

"We will know now," Dex continued his internal monologue, casting a sidelong glance at Lumia's eyes. "Whether the legendary commander Okonnor still possesses a mind for dialogue and negotiation, or if the betrayals of the past have twisted his soul, turning him into a paranoid monster who slaughters anyone daring to set foot in his final sanctuary."

Dex stood resolute, his hands raised, the dagger pressed to his throat, waiting in the heart of the darkness for the Lord of Shadows to reveal himself, the only entity possessing the authority to control all this murderous intent surrounding them.
