Chapter 58 - Chapter 58: The Deal of a Lifetime

"Agreement?" Dora asked, tilting her head curiously.

Queen Buzzara let out a long sigh and settled back onto Chief Looma-Kahn's shoulder. "Those yellow bees, the ones who call themselves honey bees once had an agreement with the rest of us. They would handle honey production and flower nurturing inside human settlements so the ecosystems there wouldn't collapse. We Chocobees and other bees took care of the wild sources."

She turned her sharp gaze toward Kevin. "How about this? Let the chief and I discuss your offer in private. You and your companions can tour the village or rest. We know you've had a long journey."

Chief Looma-Kahn nodded in agreement. He pulled a rope hanging nearby, causing a soft wooden chime to ring outside. Moments later, a young Oompa-Loompa entered the hut.

"You called, Chief?" the man asked respectfully.

The chief introduced him to Kevin. "This is Luma. He will give you and your group a proper tour of our village and show you to the guest huts so you may rest."

Luma bowed slightly and gestured for them to follow. "Please, come with me."

As they stepped outside, the village unfolded before them. It was built high among the great trees, connected by swaying but sturdy bridges woven from thick vines and creepers, linking one home to the next. Each dwelling was carved from living wood and thatched with broad, glossy leaves.

The guide led them deeper, and they began to see the rhythm of daily life. Oompa-Loompas sang soft, rhythmic tunes as they worked, climbing high branches to harvest the few remaining cocoa pods by hand, spinning and weaving cloth from jungle fibers, and tending small hearths where simple tools were forged and food was prepared.

Soon they reached the farm groves where the cocoa trees grew. But the sight made Kevin's chest tighten. Only a handful of trees still bore fruit; most stood bare and wilted, their bark scored with deep, ragged claw marks and the ground around them marked by large, heavy footprints. Hanging near every surviving trunk were dozens of thick, brown hives.

"These are our bees," Luma explained, voice turning proud. "They do not gather ordinary pollen like other bees. They feed only on the essence of the cocoa flower itself. From that, they make something rare Chocohoney: rich, sweet, and unlike anything found anywhere else."

Throughout the tour, the group split naturally to their own interests. Dora bubbled with excitement, darting ahead to play and laugh with the village children, quickly winning them over with her warmth. Diego slipped away to a small, sheltered library hollowed into an ancient tree, spending hours poring over scrolls and maps that held the tribe's accumulated knowledge of the surrounding jungle. Virginia, meanwhile, asked about their defenses; she watched closely as Oompa-Loompas demonstrated how they used sharpened bows and long spears to stab and drive off predators from the branches above, while swarms of soldier bees would dart in to sting and harry intruders that came too near.

By the time the sun dipped low and painted the canopy in gold and amber, the tour came to an end. They were led to a row of empty guest huts, each simple but clean and lined with dry grass and soft furs. They chose one each, and the day's fatigue finally caught up with them.

Kevin slumped down onto the straw mat in his hut, exhausted but satisfied. He opened his status panel in his mind.
