Chapter 5 - Pressure From All Sides

After completing Lily's admission, the two of them stood outside the administrative building.

Students moved around them.

Voices overlapped.

The world continued.

But for a brief moment—

it felt like everything had slowed down.

Lily still held onto his sleeve.

Lightly.

Not enough to attract attention.

But enough to be noticed by him.

"…You're not coming with me?"

Her voice was calm.

But there was a faint trace of reluctance beneath it.

Adrian glanced at her hand.

Then at her.

"I have class."

A pause.

Not long.

But not short either.

"…Then I'll see you later."

She didn't let go immediately.

Her fingers remained there—

just for a second longer than necessary.

As if testing something.

As if confirming something.

Then—

she slowly released him.

"…Don't talk to too many girls."

The words came softly.

Almost like a casual remark.

But there was something underneath.

Something quiet.

Something that didn't feel like a joke.

Adrian noticed it.

Of course he did.

He always noticed now.

"…I'll try."

It wasn't a promise.

It wasn't reassurance.

It was neutral.

Careful.

And yet—

Lily seemed satisfied.

She nodded slightly.

Then turned away.

Walking toward her designated classroom.

But even as she moved further—

she looked back once.

Her gaze lingered on him.

As if making sure—

he was still there.

Still within reach.

[Ding!]

A sharp sound cut through Adrian's thoughts.

[SYSTEM WARNING]

[Target Emotional Deviation Increasing]

[Target Emotional Activity Detected]

[Target: Emily Carter]

[Thought Frequency Spike Detected]

[Obsession Seed Formation: 7%]

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But his mind sharpened instantly.

"…Already?"

Too fast.

Everything was moving too fast.

Emily shouldn't have reached this level yet.

Not from just observation.

Unless—

He stopped that thought.

No time.

He turned immediately—

and walked toward the corridor.

Emily Carter stood near the window.

Her posture was straight.

Her expression calm.

At least on the surface.

She was looking outside.

But not really seeing anything.

Her thoughts were elsewhere.

Focused.

Unsettled.

She didn't turn when Adrian approached.

But she knew.

Of course she knew.

"…Who is she?"

The question came out without warning.

Direct.

Clean.

No hesitation.

Like it had been building for a while.

Adrian stopped beside her.

"…Who?"

He already knew.

But he asked anyway.

Emily turned this time.

Her eyes met his.

"The girl you were with."

A pause.

"She doesn't look like just a classmate."

Her tone wasn't accusatory.

But it wasn't neutral either.

There was something subtle.

Something tight.

Something she hadn't noticed herself.

Adrian observed her for a brief moment.

Her posture.

Her eyes.

The slight tension in her voice.

Then answered simply—

"She's my childhood sweetheart."

Silence followed.

Emily blinked once.

Then again.

Her shoulders relaxed—

just slightly.

Like something inside her had loosened.

"…Oh."

That was all she said.

But it meant more than it sounded.

Something in her chest calmed.

But not completely.

Because the next thought came immediately.

"…So she's not your girlfriend?"

This time—

her voice was quieter.

More careful.

As if she was trying not to reveal something.

Adrian looked at her.

A little longer than necessary.

Then asked lightly—

"Why?"

A small pause.

"…Are you jealous?"

Emily froze.

For just a moment—

her thoughts stopped.

Her expression shifted.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

"Who's jealous?"

Her response came faster than expected.

Too fast.

"I'm just curious."

A beat.

"…That's all."

But even as she said it—

something felt off.

Not to him.

To herself.

Her words didn't match what she felt.

And that contradiction—

made her slightly uncomfortable.

Inside her mind—

a question formed.

Then why did it bother me?

She didn't answer it.

She avoided it.

Because the answer…

felt unclear.

And uncomfortable.

[Ding!]

[Evaluation: Under Control]

[Host performance: Mediocre]

Adrian exhaled quietly.

"…Still mediocre."

But stable.

That was enough.

For now.

"Anyway," he said calmly, "I have class."

Emily nodded.

"…Me too."

There was nothing else to say.

At least—

nothing either of them wanted to say.

As Adrian turned and walked away—

he could feel it.

Her gaze.

Following him.

Not intense.

Not obvious.

But present.

And that presence—

lingered.

Emily remained where she stood.

For a few seconds.

Then—

slowly—

she looked down at her hand.

Her fingers curled slightly.

Why did I ask that?

No answer came.

Only a faint sense of discomfort.

And something else.

Something quieter.

…Why did I care?

Inside the classroom—

the atmosphere returned to normal.

Students talking.

Chairs moving.

Pages turning.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing out of place.

Adrian took his seat near the window.

Placed his bag down.

And sat back.

For a moment—

everything felt ordinary again.

Almost peaceful.

But that feeling didn't last.

The door opened.

And the room fell silent.

She walked in.

Measured steps.

Straight posture.

Every movement precise.

Controlled.

Her presence alone shifted the atmosphere.

Not because she demanded attention—

but because she naturally commanded it.

Her long black hair fell neatly over her shoulders.

Her glasses reflected a faint glint of light.

Her figure was refined.

Elegant.

Balanced perfectly with her calm expression.

Not warm.

Not cold.

Just composed.

Her eyes swept across the classroom.

One glance.

Enough to take everything in.

Then—

they paused.

Just briefly.

On Adrian.

So brief—

it could have been imagined.

Then they moved on.

"Good morning."

Her voice was clear.

Calm.

Firm.

Without force.

"I'm your class instructor."

A small pause.

"Evelyn Blake."

[Ding!]

Adrian didn't react outwardly.

But internally—

his thoughts stopped.

[New Side Mission Assigned]

[Target: Evelyn Blake]

[Mission: Increase target favorability to 60 (Love) within 7 days]

[Failure: Host will experience emotional collapse through "irreversible personal loss condition."]

"…You've got to be kidding me."

His gaze remained forward.

Unmoving.

But his mind—

was not calm.

This is a teacher.

This is not the same as before.

His fingers tightened slightly against the desk.

This crosses a line.

A very clear one.

He spoke internally.

System… are you serious?

A brief silence followed.

Then—

a response.

[Host concern detected]

[Clarification: Emotional connection parameters are not restricted by social hierarchy]

[There is no age gap in love]

Adrian went silent.

"…That's your logic?"

No answer.

Just silence.

Cold.

Unresponsive.

He leaned back slightly.

Eyes half-lidded.

Trying to process.

This isn't just about relationships anymore.

This is expansion.

Targets increasing.

Complexity increasing.

Risk increasing.

At the front—

Evelyn Blake began writing on the board.

Calm.

Focused.

Completely composed.

As if nothing in the world could disturb her.

Or perhaps—

as if she simply didn't allow it.

Adrian watched her for a moment.

Not as a man.

Not as a student.

But as someone evaluating a variable.

How do you even approach someone like that?

She wasn't like Lily.

Direct.

Open.

Emotionally expressive.

She wasn't like Emily.

Subtle.

Conflicted.

Unaware.

No—

Evelyn Blake felt different.

Controlled.

Guarded.

Distant.

This won't be simple.

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

"…Fine."

If this was the system's game—

then he would play it.

But not blindly.

And not recklessly.

Because now—

he understood something clearly.

This wasn't about love.

It wasn't even about control anymore.

It was about balance.

Too much attention—

and someone would spiral.

Too little—

and someone would collapse.

And somewhere in between—

was the only place he could survive.

Outside the classroom—

someone stood quietly.

Unseen.

Unnoticed.

Watching.

Emily Carter.

Her gaze fixed on Adrian through the window.

Unmoving.

Her expression calm.

But her thoughts—

were not.

Childhood sweetheart…

The words echoed faintly.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Her fingers tightened slightly.

Then why…

A pause.

Why did it feel like that?

No answer came.

Only silence.

And a growing sense of something she couldn't name.

Inside the classroom—

Adrian looked forward.

Unaware of her exact thoughts.

But aware of something else.

Something subtle.

Something shifting.

[Ding!]

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

[Multiple Target Emotional Activity Increasing]

[Stability Risk: Rising]

Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

"…So it begins."

Because now—

it wasn't just one.

It wasn't just two.

It was spreading.

Quietly.

Naturally.

Inevitably.

And once it reached a certain point—

there would be no controlling it anymore.
