Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Things That Remember You First

Chapter 9: The Things That Remember You First

The entity from Sector 6 remained in front of Riven Azure. It stood perfectly still. It was not restrained or afraid. It simply stayed near him.

Riven studied it quietly. "…You're not hostile," he said. No response came. But the air softened slightly.

Recognition filled the silence. The thing did not move. Yet it somehow answered.

The Directorate systems suddenly erupted with alerts. Screens changed faster than staff could react. Warnings spread across every sector.

"Containment movement detected in Sectors 2, 4, and 9!" someone shouted. "Multiple chambers opening?" another asked.

"No," a technician replied. "…They're unlocking from inside." Silence spread through the room.

That phrase was becoming familiar. No one liked hearing it again.

A new message appeared across all monitors. It displayed itself without command.

> PROXIMITY RESPONSE EXPANDING

Then another line followed immediately.

> ADDITIONAL ENTITIES IN TRANSIT

The suited man's expression hardened. "How many?" he asked.

The system paused before replying.

> COUNTING METHOD INSUFFICIENT

No one spoke after that. The answer was worse than numbers.

Riven glanced down the long corridor. It no longer felt empty. Something was approaching from several directions.

Not footsteps. Not movement. Presence itself.

"…That's a lot," he murmured. The Sector 6 entity beside him remained still. It seemed to have arrived first on purpose.

The woman researcher checked the live data rapidly. "They aren't breaching aggressively," she said. "They're bypassing obstacles without damage."

"Meaning?" someone asked.

"They're preserving the facility while moving through it." The suited man narrowed his eyes. "…They know where they're going."

Another alert appeared at once.

> ENTITY RECOGNITION RESPONSE ACTIVE

Then a second line followed.

> SUBJECT IDENTIFIED PRIOR TO FIRST CONTACT

The room froze. "What does that mean?" a technician whispered.

The woman answered slowly. "It means some of them recognized him… before meeting him."

Three intersections ahead darkened. Then brightened. Then changed shape slightly.

Doorways opened by themselves. Security barriers disengaged. Paths straightened ahead.

The facility itself was helping them arrive.

Riven sighed softly. "…Now even the building is participating."

A nearby terminal activated instantly.

> CORRECTION: STRUCTURE RESPONDING TO FLOW

He glanced at it. "That's worse wording."

The first new anomaly appeared. It was a floating metallic sphere covered in shifting symbols. It hovered beside Riven silently.

The second arrived moments later. A tall faceless silhouette of folded shadow stood several meters away. It only watched.

The third never appeared visually. Temperature changed first. Then pressure changed. Then everyone knew it was there.

None attacked. None fled. They only gathered.

"This is mass breach protocol!" someone shouted.

"No," the suited man said sharply. "This is assembly."

The room fell silent again. That idea was far more dangerous.

All monitors refreshed together. A new system notice appeared.

> CONTAINMENT STATUS: OBSOLETE

Then another line followed.

> NEW PRIMARY FUNCTION: MONITOR CONVERGENCE

A researcher stepped back. "It changed the purpose of the facility…"

"No," the woman said quietly. "…Reality did."

Riven looked around at the anomalies surrounding him. Different forms stood together. Different rules existed beside each other.

Yet they all shared one thing. Recognition.

"…You know me," he said softly.

No voice answered. But every presence reacted at once. A synchronized stillness filled the corridor.

The system displayed one final message.

> SUBJECT FUNCTIONS AS REFERENCE POINT

Then another line appeared.

> SOME ENTITIES REMEMBER PRIOR TO CONTACT

Riven's eyes narrowed slightly. "That shouldn't be possible."

A pause followed. Then the Sector 6 entity moved for the first time.

It raised one hand. It pointed upward. Not to the ceiling. Beyond it.

The suited man stared at the feed. "They're not gathering because of him."

The woman turned sharply. "Then why?"

He answered quietly. "…Because something above noticed first."
