Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: The Day the Palace Held Its Breath

The palace woke differently that morning.

Not louder.

Not busier.

But heavier.

As if something unseen had settled over every corridor, pressing down on stone and breath alike.

Elara felt it the moment she opened her eyes.

There was no clear reason.

No announcement.

No visible change.

And yet—

Everything felt wrong.

---

She sat quietly as Lina helped prepare her for the day, dressing her in simple palace attire. Her long reddish-brown hair fading into pink was brushed carefully, falling smoothly over her shoulders. Crimson eyes watched her reflection in the mirror without blinking.

"You are quiet today, Your Highness," Lina said gently.

Elara's voice came after a moment.

"…Something is happening."

Lina hesitated.

"Nothing has been announced—"

"It doesn't need to be announced," Elara interrupted softly.

Her gaze shifted slightly toward the window.

"He already knows."

---

At the same time, deep within the imperial council chamber, Emperor Kaelion Virelith stood at the head of the long table.

The nobles were not speaking.

They were waiting.

For his reaction.

For his judgment.

For anything.

But Kaelion remained still, his amber-red eyes fixed on the sealed report before him.

A second attempt.

Different route.

Same intent.

The pattern was no longer coincidence.

It was design.

"…Confirm the source," he said finally.

A noble stepped forward cautiously.

"Your Majesty, it traces back to internal movement within the palace structure. Not foreign influence."

Silence followed.

That answer changed everything.

Kaelion's expression did not shift.

But the air around him did.

Sharper.

Colder.

More absolute.

"Lock down all secondary access routes," he ordered. "No movement without direct authorization."

No one questioned him.

No one dared.

But when the council adjourned, the weight of unspoken fear followed them out.

---

Elara was already in the garden when he arrived.

Earlier than usual.

She did not look up immediately.

She already knew.

The air had changed again.

Not in the way it did when guards were nearby.

Not in the way it did when nobles whispered.

This was different.

This was him.

---

Kaelion stopped at the edge of the garden.

He did not sit immediately.

That alone was enough to signal that today was not like the others.

Elara finally lifted her gaze.

He stood there for a moment longer than usual.

Then he spoke.

"Leave the garden."

Her fingers paused around the teacup.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Calculation.

"…Is something wrong?"

His eyes met hers directly.

"That is not your concern."

A pause.

Elara slowly set the cup down.

"…It involves me."

It was not a question.

Kaelion did not answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

---

He stepped forward.

Not toward the table.

Toward her.

That small shift changed the entire atmosphere.

The space between them, once routine, suddenly felt smaller than it should have.

"You will remain within secured quarters until further notice," he said.

Elara studied him carefully.

"…Because of the attack?"

Kaelion's gaze narrowed slightly.

"Because someone is still moving inside this palace."

The words settled heavily.

Inside.

Not outside.

Not unknown.

Inside.

---

Elara was quiet for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

"…You are certain it is not random?"

Kaelion's voice dropped slightly.

"It is not."

Another pause.

Then—

"You are the target."

---

The wind shifted through the garden, but neither of them moved.

Elara did not show shock.

Or fear.

Only understanding.

That, more than anything, made Kaelion's gaze linger.

Because most people reacted.

She analyzed.

---

"…Then restricting my movement is logical," she said calmly.

Kaelion nodded once.

"It is necessary."

A pause.

Then, quieter—

"Do not leave the east wing."

The order was absolute.

Final.

---

Elara looked at him for a moment longer.

Then she nodded.

"…Understood."

No resistance.

No argument.

Just acceptance.

---

Kaelion turned slightly, as if preparing to leave.

But Elara spoke again.

"…You are staying close."

It was not a question.

He stopped.

"…That is irrelevant."

But he did not deny it.

---

Silence stretched between them.

Longer than usual.

He should have left.

She should have returned to her room.

That was the logical outcome.

And yet—

Neither moved immediately.

---

Finally, Kaelion spoke.

"You will follow instructions."

Elara met his gaze.

"I always do."

A pause.

Then, softer—

"…But you do not trust anyone inside the palace."

Kaelion's expression did not change.

But something in his eyes sharpened slightly.

"That includes you."

The words were blunt.

Honest.

Unsoftened.

---

Elara did not react immediately.

Then she nodded once.

"…Good."

That answer was unexpected.

Even for him.

His gaze lingered a fraction longer.

Then he turned away.

And left.

---

Elara remained seated after he was gone.

The tea had gone cold.

The garden felt quieter now.

But not empty.

Not anymore.

Her fingers rested lightly on the table as she looked at the empty chair across from her.

"…So it's already reached this point."

Her voice was barely audible.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Just acknowledgment.

---

Somewhere deeper in the palace, Kaelion moved through silent corridors, guards stepping aside instantly as he passed.

His expression remained composed.

But his thoughts did not.

She accepted it too easily.

That was the problem.

Not resistance.

Not fear.

Acceptance.

And in a place like this—

That meant she understood more than she should.

---

Above them, the palace continued to breathe in silence.

But beneath that silence—

Something had begun to close in.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Unseen.

And neither of them yet realized—

That whatever was targeting the princess…

was also already watching the emperor.
