Chapter 4 - The First Words

Some conversations don't start with confidence… they begin with hesitation, silence, and a small moment of courage that changes everything.

The silence between us had become familiar.

Not awkward.

Not uncomfortable.

Just… natural.

Days had passed with the same routine.

The same place.

The same time.

The same quiet presence.

And yet… something had changed.

That brief moment when our eyes met the previous day…

It stayed with me.

It was just a second.

But it felt longer.

Deeper.

Like something unspoken had passed between us.

And now…

That silence didn't feel empty anymore.

It felt like it was waiting.

Waiting for something.

Maybe for words.

Maybe for courage.

Or maybe… just the right moment.

That evening, I walked to the bench again.

My steps were slow.

But my thoughts…

They were louder than usual.

"What if today something changes?"

"What if nothing happens again?"

I didn't understand why I was thinking so much.

This was just another day.

Just another evening.

And yet… it didn't feel ordinary.

When I reached there, they were already sitting.

In the same place.

In the same calm way.

Looking at the sky.

Lost in their own world.

For a moment…

I stood there.

Not moving.

Just watching.

Something inside me hesitated.

Should I go and sit like always?

Or should I just leave?

Why was this suddenly so difficult?

I had been coming here every day.

Nothing had changed.

But still…

Everything felt different.

I took a deep breath.

Trying to calm myself.

And then slowly…

I walked towards the bench.

And sat down.

At the same distance.

Close enough to feel their presence.

Far enough to stay safe.

For a few minutes…

Nothing happened.

Just silence.

The wind moved gently.

The surroundings were quiet.

Everything felt normal.

But inside me…

There was a quiet storm.

Thoughts.

Questions.

Doubts.

"Say something," a voice inside me whispered.

But I didn't.

Because I didn't know how.

How do you start a conversation with someone you don't even know?

What if they ignore you?

What if they think you're strange?

What if it becomes awkward?

I looked down, avoiding everything.

Trying to hide my nervousness.

Trying to calm my racing thoughts.

And then…

"You come here every day."

The voice was soft.

Calm.

And close.

For a second…

Everything stopped.

Did they just talk to me?

I slowly looked up.

They were looking at me.

Not in a strange way.

Not in a judging way.

Just… calmly.

Like it was normal.

Like it wasn't a big deal.

But for me…

It was.

Because it had been a long time since someone spoke to me like this.

Without pressure.

Without expectation.

Just… simply.

"I… yeah," I replied softly.

My voice felt small.

Uncertain.

But at least… I spoke.

"That's nice," they said.

And then…

Silence again.

But this silence was different.

It wasn't empty anymore.

It had meaning now.

Because it carried words.

Simple ones.

But important ones.

I didn't know what to say next.

So, I stayed quiet.

And surprisingly…

It didn't feel uncomfortable.

It felt… peaceful.

After a few seconds, they spoke again.

"It's peaceful here."

I nodded slowly.

"Yes… it is."

Another small reply.

But something inside me felt lighter.

Because I wasn't completely silent anymore.

A small conversation had started.

And somehow…

It didn't feel difficult.

We both looked ahead.

Not at each other.

Just at the open space in front of us.

Like we were sharing the same moment.

Without forcing anything.

"What do you think about when you sit here?" they asked.

The question caught me off guard.

I wasn't ready for that.

Because the truth was complicated.

Too deep.

Too heavy.

"I don't know," I said after a pause.

"Just… everything."

They nodded slowly.

Like they understood.

"I get that," they said quietly.

And those three words…

They felt different.

Because it didn't feel like sympathy.

It felt like understanding.

Real understanding.

And that made something shift inside me.

For the first time…

I felt like someone didn't need a long explanation to understand me.

We sat there for a long time.

Talking occasionally.

Small conversations.

Simple words.

Nothing too deep.

Nothing too intense.

But still…

It felt meaningful.

Because it was real.

There was no pressure to impress.

No need to pretend.

Just… being there.

Before leaving, they stood up slowly.

"I'll see you tomorrow," they said.

It wasn't a question.

It wasn't forced.

Just a simple statement.

And for some reason…

It made me feel something.

A quiet warmth.

"Yeah," I replied softly.

That night…

When I lay on my bed…

My thoughts were different.

Not heavy.

Not overwhelming.

Just… calm.

Because now…

There was something new.

Something simple.

But real.

A connection.

The next day, I noticed something strange.

I was waiting.

Not consciously.

But naturally.

Waiting for the evening.

For that place.

For that moment.

And when I reached there…

They were already there.

This time…

I didn't hesitate.

I walked straight to the bench and sat down.

Without overthinking.

"You're early today," they said.

I looked at them and gave a small smile.

"Maybe," I replied.

That smile…

It surprised me.

Because it came naturally.

Not forced.

Not fake.

And that felt important.

We talked again.

A little more than before.

Still simple.

Still calm.

But comfortable.

"What's your name?" they asked.

For a moment…

I hesitated.

Because sharing something personal felt strange.

But then…

I said it.

Softly.

They repeated it.

Like they were remembering it.

And then they told me theirs.

That moment felt small.

But important.

Because now…

We weren't just strangers anymore.

We were something more.

Not friends.

Not yet.

But not strangers either.

As days passed…

Our conversations grew.

Slowly.

Naturally.

Without pressure.

Without expectations.

And with every passing day…

I noticed something.

I was changing.

Not completely.

Not suddenly.

But slowly.

I wasn't as lost in my thoughts.

I wasn't as overwhelmed.

Because now…

I had something to look forward to.

Something real.

Something simple.

Something that made me feel… less alone.

And maybe…

That's how healing begins.

Not with big changes.

Not with sudden happiness.

But with small moments.

Small conversations.

Small connections.

That slowly…

Change everything
