Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8 : A Quiet Shift

The office settled into its usual rhythm by the afternoon.

Work continued without interruption. Phones rang at regular intervals, keyboards clicked steadily, and quiet conversations drifted through the air before fading again. A few employees stood near the hallway discussing reports, while others remained focused on their screens.

Everything moved as it always did.

Nothing looked different.

Nothing felt urgent.

And yet—

inside Zhao Chen's office, the atmosphere was not the same.

He sat at his desk, staring at the screen in front of him.

The same file was still open.

He had already checked it twice after Lin Xue corrected it earlier.

Everything looked fine.

The numbers matched.

The structure was clear.

There were no visible mistakes.

And still—

he didn't close it.

His fingers hovered above the keyboard for a moment before slowly lowering.

After a brief pause, he began checking the file again.

This time, more slowly.

More carefully.

Line by line.

Number by number.

Nothing.

Zhao Chen leaned back in his chair and let out a quiet breath.

He stared at the ceiling for a second before lowering his gaze again.

This wasn't normal.

He had always trusted his work.

Mistakes were rare, and when they did happen, they were minor.

Nothing like yesterday.

Nothing that would be pointed out in front of others.

His jaw tightened slightly.

The meeting replayed in his mind.

The investor's voice.

The question.

The silence that followed.

And the way the room had changed in that moment.

It had been subtle.

But he felt it clearly.

The trust—

had shifted.

Zhao Chen rubbed his forehead again.

Then his thoughts turned, almost without him noticing.

To Lin Xue.

She had been calm.

Focused.

Clear.

She found the issue quickly.

Explained it without hesitation.

Fixed it without delay.

Just like she always did.

Zhao Chen frowned slightly.

Something about it felt…

too smooth.

Not wrong.

But not entirely right either.

He couldn't explain it.

After a moment, he shook his head lightly.

He was overthinking.

That had to be it.

He straightened in his chair and looked at the file again.

Everything was correct.

Everything was stable.

So why—

didn't it feel that way?

Outside, Lin Xue sat quietly at her desk.

She was reviewing a set of documents, her eyes moving steadily across the page.

Her movements were calm.

Measured.

Unhurried.

Nothing about her stood out.

From a distance, she looked exactly the same as she always did.

Focused.

Reliable.

Easy to overlook.

But her mind was clear.

She didn't need to check anything.

She didn't need to confirm.

She already knew.

Zhao Chen was still thinking about it.

Doubt didn't disappear quickly.

It didn't fade just because the numbers were corrected.

Once it appeared—

it stayed.

And slowly—

it grew.

Lin Xue turned a page quietly.

Her expression didn't change.

In her previous life, she would have gone to his office by now.

She would have checked everything again.

Explained things carefully.

Made sure he felt reassured.

She would have tried to fix the feeling.

Now—

she didn't.

She let it stay.

A few minutes later, Zhao Chen stood up.

He looked at the file one last time before closing his laptop.

Then he opened the door and stepped out.

His eyes moved across the office floor briefly before settling on Lin Xue.

"Are you free?" he asked.

Lin Xue looked up.

"Yes."

"I want to go through the report again," he said.

Lin Xue paused for a second.

Then nodded. "Okay."

She stood up and followed him back to the office.

The door closed behind them.

Zhao Chen sat down and opened the file again.

"I know we already checked this," he said, "but I want to be sure."

Lin Xue didn't react.

"That's fine," she said.

She stepped closer and looked at the screen.

Zhao Chen began scrolling through the document again.

Slower than before.

More careful.

"This section," he said after a moment. "Check it again."

Lin Xue leaned slightly closer.

Her eyes moved across the numbers quietly.

"It's correct," she said.

Zhao Chen didn't respond immediately.

He checked it himself again.

His eyes moved over the same numbers.

The same data.

Then he nodded slowly.

"Alright."

The room fell quiet.

Zhao Chen leaned back in his chair again.

This time, he didn't look at the screen.

Instead—

he looked at Lin Xue.

She stood there calmly.

Waiting.

"You've been handling most of this lately," he said.

Lin Xue met his gaze.

"It's part of my work."

The answer was simple.

Straightforward.

But something about it felt distant.

Zhao Chen couldn't explain it.

He had heard her say similar things before.

Many times.

But this time—

it didn't feel the same.

He looked away first.

"Still," he said after a moment, "you've been helping a lot."

Lin Xue didn't respond immediately.

She had heard those words before too.

In another time—

they would have meant something.

Now—

they didn't.

"It's nothing," she said.

Her tone remained calm.

Zhao Chen nodded slightly.

But the conversation didn't continue.

Because neither of them had anything more to say.

After a moment, Lin Xue stepped back.

"If there's nothing else, I'll go back," she said.

Zhao Chen nodded.

"Send me the final version later."

"I will."

She turned and walked toward the door.

Her steps were steady.

Unhurried.

When she opened the door and stepped out, she didn't look back.

Inside the office, Zhao Chen remained seated.

He stared at the screen again.

Everything was correct.

And yet—

he didn't trust it completely.

That feeling remained.

Small.

But persistent.

He opened the file again.

Scrolled through it once more.

Then stopped.

This wasn't about the numbers anymore.

It was about something else.

Something he couldn't define.

Back at her desk, Lin Xue sat down again.

She picked up the same document and continued working.

Her movements were smooth.

Natural.

As if nothing had changed.

But her thoughts were clear.

Zhao Chen would check things more now.

He would hesitate before making decisions.

He would question himself.

And that—

was enough.

She didn't need to do more.

Not yet.

Because doubt—

worked slowly.

And once it started—

it didn't need help to grow.

As the afternoon passed, the office gradually quieted down.

Some employees left early.

Others packed their things and prepared to go.

The noise faded.

The movement slowed.

By the time the sun began to set, only a few lights remained on.

Lin Xue closed her laptop.

She gathered her things calmly.

She didn't rush.

Before leaving, she paused for a moment.

Her eyes moved briefly toward Zhao Chen's office.

The door was still closed.

She didn't go there.

She didn't knock.

She didn't need to.

She turned and walked toward the exit.

Her reflection appeared faintly in the glass doors.

Calm.

Steady.

Unchanged.

But inside—

everything had already shifted.

Not suddenly.

Not visibly.

But enough.

Doubt had taken root.

And from here—

it would grow on its own.

Lin Xue stepped outside.

The evening air was cool.

The city moved as it always did.

Nothing looked different.

But she knew—

things were no longer the same.

"This is just the beginning," she thought quietly.

And this time—

she would not stop halfway.
