Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The Network Grows

The crystal processing initiative launched quietly the following week.

It was framed publicly as Aegis expanding into "integrated resource management" — a deliberately dull phrase that caused financial journalists to write three-paragraph summaries and move on, which was exactly the intended effect.

Privately, it involved Arthur Vance's construction subsidiaries building twelve new processing facilities in locations that Elias had identified as both logistically optimal and deliberately chosen to be in regions Harlan Graves had not yet penetrated. Magnus Valerius's Crimson Dawn Guild, in exchange for a favorable revenue arrangement and the continued assurance that Aegis was not targeting them, contributed mining rights in three territories their own hunters had been working.

The Sterling Family provided the technical expertise — Aria's people had, it turned out, been quietly studying mana crystal processing for a decade as a long-term investment and had solved several efficiency problems that the established facilities had not bothered to address.

Elias contributed the organizational architecture, the Gate clearance operations that sourced the raw crystals, and the Shadow Inquisitors whose Abyssal Light trait had proven, through careful experimentation, to dramatically accelerate the purification process when used with precise, controlled application on unrefined crystal material.

This last contribution was not in any public document.

By the end of the third week, the first three facilities were operational. By the end of the fifth week, Aegis's crystal output was sufficient to supply itself and a small number of partner guilds. By the end of the second month, the alternative network was large enough that the market had noticed it without yet understanding its source or implications.

Harlan Graves noticed too. Elias knew because Renata Cho's Seventh Spire Guild made two attempts in the same period to acquire land permits in the territories where the new facilities were being built, both of which Arthur's regulatory network quietly denied on technical grounds that were entirely valid and entirely deliberate.

The response to the denied permits was the second message.

It arrived through the same untraceable routing as the first and contained more words this time.

You are building toward something. So am I. We could do this the destructive way, or we could talk.

Elias read it. He considered it.

Then he wrote back.

Send Renata Cho. Neutral location. She has forty-eight hours.

He sent it and returned to his work.

Aria appeared in the doorway of the office three hours later. "Seventh Spire just requested an emergency meeting with Aegis. They're proposing the old government convention center as a neutral location."

"Accept it," Elias said.

"Are you going to tell me what you're planning to say?"

"I'm going to listen," Elias said. "Whatever Harlan Graves wants to tell me through Renata Cho is more useful to know than anything I could tell him."
