Chapter 8 - THE COST OF POWER

The silence after battle didn't feel like victory.

It felt like a warning.

Eli stood still, staring at where the creature had collapsed.

Gone.

Reduced to nothing.

Just like the others.

But this time—

Something felt different.

"…You're thinking too much again."

Mira's voice cut through his thoughts.

Eli exhaled slowly.

"…Maybe."

She stepped beside him, scanning the area.

"…You handled that well."

Eli smirked faintly.

"…Wow. That almost sounded like praise."

"…Don't get used to it."

"…Yeah, yeah."

But even as he joked—

His hand trembled slightly.

Just for a moment.

Barely noticeable.

But real.

"…You feel it too, don't you?" Mira said quietly.

Eli froze.

"…Feel what?"

She looked directly at him.

"…That it wasn't stable."

Silence.

Eli clenched his fist.

"…It was controlled."

"…For now," she replied.

He didn't answer.

Because she wasn't wrong.

Later – Safe Zone

The tension lingered.

Even after they returned underground.

People whispered.

Moved faster.

Stayed alert.

Something had changed.

Eli sat against the wall again.

Same spot.

Different feeling.

"…You're pushing too fast."

He glanced up.

Mira again.

Of course.

"…You ever not show up when I'm thinking?"

"No."

"…Figures."

She crossed her arms.

"…You improved today."

"…I noticed."

"…But you're still forcing growth."

Eli tilted his head.

"…Isn't that the point?"

"No," she said. "Survival is the point."

Eli stared at the ground.

"…If I stay weak…"

He paused.

"…I die anyway."

Mira didn't respond immediately.

"…Then get stronger the right way."

"…And what's that?"

"…Control first. Power second."

Eli chuckled softly.

"…Yeah… that sounds slower."

"…It is."

"…And dangerous."

"…So is what you're doing."

Silence settled between them.

Eli leaned his head back against the wall.

"…I felt it again."

Mira didn't react outwardly.

"…Explain."

"…The core."

He tapped his chest lightly.

"…It didn't like what I did."

"…Of course it didn't."

"…But it didn't explode either."

Mira narrowed her eyes slightly.

"…So you think you're adapting."

"…I am."

"…Or it's adapting to you."

That made him pause.

"…That's… not reassuring."

"It shouldn't be."

Training Chamber – Night

Eli didn't sleep.

Not really.

He returned to the chamber alone.

"…One more time."

He stepped into the center.

Raised his hand.

Focused.

"Shadow Fracture."

The ripple formed—

Clean.

Stable.

Controlled.

Eli smiled.

"…See? I—"

[WARNING: CORE INSTABILITY RISING]

"…Wait—"

The energy surged suddenly.

Violent.

Sharp.

Unpredictable.

"—!"

Eli staggered.

"…No, no, no—"

Pain exploded in his chest.

Worse than before.

"AH—!"

He dropped to his knees.

The energy didn't calm.

Didn't stabilize.

It grew.

[CORE OVERLOAD IMMINENT]

"…Not now…!"

Eli tried to suppress it—

But that made it worse.

"STOP—!"

The energy lashed out—

Cracking the ground beneath him.

Flash

For a moment—

Everything went dark.

Then—

He wasn't in the chamber anymore.

Inside the Core

A void.

Endless.

Dark.

Heavy.

Eli stood alone.

"…What… is this?"

A pulse echoed.

Louder.

Closer.

Then—

A voice.

"…You take…"

Eli froze.

"…Who's there?"

"…You take what is not yours…"

The darkness shifted.

Moved.

Formed something—

Not quite visible.

But present.

"…Give it back."

Eli's expression hardened.

"…Yeah… that's not happening."

The presence surged—

Pressing down on him.

"…Then break."

Reality – Training Chamber

Eli's body convulsed.

Energy spiraled around him violently.

Cracks spread across the floor.

Mira burst into the room.

"…Eli!"

She froze.

"…No…"

The energy around him—

Was different.

Darker.

Heavier.

"…He's losing control."

Inside the Core

Eli struggled to stand.

"…You think you can scare me?"

The presence didn't respond.

It simply—

Pressed harder.

"…You're inside me," Eli said.

"…That means…"

He clenched his fist.

"…this is my space."

For a moment—

Silence.

Then—

The pressure increased.

"…Prove it."

Reality

Eli's eyes snapped open.

Glowing faintly.

"—MOVE!"

The energy exploded outward.

Mira barely dodged.

"…Damn it!"

Eli stood—

But not fully himself.

"…Too much…" he muttered.

"…Too loud…"

The energy surged again.

Mira stepped forward cautiously.

"…Eli."

No response.

"…If you can hear me…"

She steadied herself.

"…Fight it."

Inside the Core

Eli dropped to one knee.

"…This again…"

The pressure was overwhelming.

Crushing.

But—

Not absolute.

"…You're strong," Eli said.

"…I'll give you that."

He looked up.

"…But you're not me."

He stood slowly.

Every movement heavy.

Painful.

"…And I don't lose control that easily."

The presence surged again—

But this time—

Eli pushed back.

Not with force.

With will.

Reality

The energy around Eli flickered.

Unstable—

But shifting.

Mira watched carefully.

"…Come on…"

Inside the Core

Eli stepped forward.

Into the pressure.

"…You're part of me now."

The darkness twisted.

Resisting.

"…So you follow my rules."

For a moment—

Everything stopped.

Then—

The pressure cracked.

Reality

The energy burst—

Then—

Collapsed inward.

Silence.

Eli fell forward—

Catching himself barely.

Breathing hard.

"…Okay…"

"…That sucked."

Mira exhaled slowly.

"…You almost died."

Eli laughed weakly.

"…Yeah… getting used to that."

She stepped closer.

"…What happened?"

Eli hesitated.

"…It talked to me."

Mira's expression darkened.

"…That's not good."

"…Yeah, I figured."

He sat down heavily.

"…It wants control back."

"…Of course it does."

"…But…"

He looked at his hands.

"…I pushed back."

Mira studied him.

"…And?"

Eli smiled faintly.

"…It listened."

Silence.

"…That's worse," she said.

"…Why?"

"…Because now it knows you can fight it."

Eli leaned back.

Exhausted.

"…Good."

Mira frowned.

"…You think this is a win?"

Eli closed his eyes.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But it's not a loss either."

System Notification

[CORE STABILIZATION: PARTIAL SUCCESS]

[NEW TRAIT UNLOCKED: RESISTANCE]

[WARNING: ENTITY AWARENESS INCREASED]

Eli opened one eye.

"…Yeah… definitely not a win."

Elsewhere

Veyr's eyes glowed brighter.

"…He made contact."

A slow smile spread.

"…Perfect."

Back in the Chamber

Eli slowly stood.

Still shaking.

Still tired.

But—

Standing.

Mira looked at him.

"…You're not ready."

Eli nodded.

"…I know."

He looked at his hand.

Then clenched it.

"…But I'm getting closer."

The core pulsed again.

Quieter.

But watching.
