"And that makes me suspicious?"
"No," Daniel answered quietly. "It makes you look trained."
The sentence landed heavily in the room.
Alaric's gaze instinctively moved toward Elena again because suddenly… he remembered, the way she controlled every expression on her face, the way she never reacted impulsively, the strange emptiness of her phone, the sleepless nights, the hidden hospital searches.
Even he started wondering… What kind of life creates someone this guarded?
Elena slowly uncrossed her legs before standing from the couch.
The movement was graceful. Controlled but colder than before.
"If your interrogation is over," she said quietly, "I'd like to leave now."
Daniel watched her carefully. "You still haven't answered my question."
Elena stopped. Finally looked directly at him. "And what question is that?"
Daniel's voice lowered slightly. "What are you hiding from us?"
