Chapter 40 - THE WEIGHT OF THE CROWN

02:00 AM

Sector 7 Headquarters Balcony – Overlooking the Ironport Skyline

Silent. The party has ended. Den, Selina, Ricky, and the rest of the team are fast asleep in their respective rooms. Only the sound of the cold night wind and the faint hum of Mia's computer systems still running in the distance remain.

Rion stood on the balcony, gazing at the city lights he now controlled. In the darkness, he felt like the only person truly awake in a dreaming world. However, footsteps he knew all too well echoed behind him.

Ren approached, draping a silk shawl over her shoulders. She stood beside Rion, not looking at him, but staring in the same direction.

A Conversation About the Future

"They're all asleep," Ren said softly. "Those kids... Mia, Mako, Krow. They look so peaceful when they sleep, as if they aren't the monsters who just took down a cartel."

Rion exhaled a long breath. "They aren't monsters, Ren. They're just products of this broken city. My job is to make sure they never have to go back to those cold streets again."

Ren gave a thin smile, a trace of sadness in her eyes. "Sometimes I wonder... if this city ever truly becomes clean, is there a place for people like us to have a normal family? To have children who grow up without ever needing to know how to hold a gun or hack a server?"

The question hung in the air. Rion remained silent for a long time. Until now, he had only thought about tactics and survival. But imagining Ren as the mother of his children—in a peaceful world—was the most dangerous yet beautiful thought he had ever had.

A Declaration in the Dark

Rion turned, looking at Ren with an intensity that made her feel exposed under his gaze.

"I don't know about a peaceful world," Rion's voice was heavy and low. "But I know one thing. The reason I built all of this... the reason I'm making sure Ironport is under my control... it's not just for them. It's for you."

Rion stepped forward, closing the distance between them. "I've spent my whole life not caring about anyone. But you... you are the only variable I can't calculate. I love you, Ren. And I would burn this city to the ground if it meant keeping you safe by my side."

The Cold Denial

The air seemed to freeze. Ren was paralyzed. Her heart raced—a feeling she had locked deep away in the furthest chamber of her heart long ago. However, her common sense quickly took over—a defense mechanism that had saved her countless times.

Ren let out a small laugh, though her voice trembled slightly. She took a step back, creating a painful distance between them.

"Rion... you're drunk on victory," Ren said, trying hard to keep her voice flat and professional. "Don't confuse our working chemistry with foolish feelings like that. We are business partners. We are the shadow rulers. Love will only make your hands shake when you need to pull the trigger."

"You know I'm not drunk, Ren," Rion countered, his eyes unblinking.

"No," Ren cut him off quickly, her eyes sharp yet evasive. "Don't say it again. If we want Nero Familia to survive, we must remain what we agreed to be: the brain and the muscle. Not a pair of lovers who will crumble if one goes missing. Forget what you said, Rion. It never happened."

Ren turned and walked away with quick strides, leaving Rion alone on the balcony. Rion didn't chase her. He simply watched her silhouette disappear into the darkness of the corridor, knowing that behind that rejection lay a massive wall of fear he would eventually have to tear down.
