Chapter 36 - The Voice That Shouldn't Exist

Night had a way of stretching itself when sleep refused to come.

For Isha, it wasn't just another night. It was one of those long, suffocating hours where silence felt louder than noise, where every second dragged like it was carrying something heavy behind it. The room was dim, lit only by the faint yellow light of a table lamp that flickered once in a while, as if even it was struggling to stay alive.

She sat near the window, her knees pulled close, her arms wrapped around them tightly. Outside, the city still moved, but slower now. A few distant vehicles, a dog barking somewhere far away, the occasional whisper of wind brushing past the buildings _____ everything felt distant.

Disconnected.

Just like her.

Her eyes weren't really looking outside. They were lost somewhere in between memory and emptiness.

Vikram.

His name alone was enough to make her chest tighten again.

She could still remember the way he used to stand quietly, never saying too much but always understanding. The way his presence felt like calm in the middle of chaos.

And now…

Nothing.

Just silence.

"I didn't even say it…" she whispered under her breath, her voice breaking slightly.

The words felt heavier tonight.

Like regret had finally found its place.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her arms as she closed her eyes, trying to stop the thoughts, trying to push everything away for just a few seconds.

But that's when it happened.

"Isha…"

Her eyes snapped open instantly.

Her heart skipped.

The voice was soft.

Low.

Almost like a whisper carried by the wind.

But it was clear.

Too clear.

She froze.

For a moment, she didn't move at all.

Her breathing slowed, her ears straining to catch even the smallest sound.

"Hello…?" she said cautiously, her voice barely above a whisper.

No response.

The room stayed the same.

Still.

Silent.

She quickly stood up, her eyes moving around the room.

Door closed.

Window slightly open.

Curtains moving gently with the wind.

"No…" she muttered, shaking her head. "I imagined it."

It had to be that.

Her mind was already fragile.

Her emotions unstable.

Maybe this was just… stress.

Grief.

Something breaking inside her.

She let out a shaky breath and turned back toward the window.

But before she could take another step—

"Find… the truth…"

The voice came again.

This time clearer.

Slower.

Broken.

Her entire body stiffened.

Her heartbeat rose sharply, echoing in her ears.

"No…" she whispered, stepping back slightly. "Who's there?"

Her voice trembled.

But there was no answer.

Just silence.

The same suffocating silence.

She turned quickly, walking toward the door and opening it.

"Maa?" she called out.

No reply.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

She stepped out into the hallway, checking every corner, every shadow.

Nothing.

No one.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly as panic slowly started creeping in.

"This isn't real…" she whispered to herself.

"It's just in my head…"

But deep down…

She knew it wasn't.

Because she had heard it.

Clearly.

"Isha…"

Her name again.

Right behind her.

She turned instantly.

Nothing.

But this time, the fear wasn't the only thing inside her.

There was something else.

Curiosity.

Confusion.

And a strange pull she couldn't explain.

"What do you want?" she asked, her voice steadier now, though her fingers still trembled.

For a few seconds, there was nothing.

Then—

"Go… back…"

The words came slowly.

As if each one was being forced out.

"Where… it began…"

Isha's breath caught.

Her mind immediately went to one place.

That road.

That night.

The accident.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"No…" she said quickly, shaking her head. "I'm not going there again."

Silence.

For a moment, she thought it was over.

That maybe whatever this was… had stopped.

But then—

"You… want answers…"

The voice returned.

Softer this time.

But sharper.

And that was enough.

Because it was true.

She did want answers.

More than anything.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

Her fear didn't disappear.

But something else started rising above it.

Determination.

If there was even a small chance that this… whatever it was… could lead her to the truth—

She couldn't ignore it.

"I'm not crazy…" she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

Then after a pause—

"Fine."

The word came out quietly.

But firmly.

"I'll go."

...

The road looked different at night.

Colder.

Darker.

More dangerous.

The broken streetlight cast uneven shadows across the turn, making everything look distorted. The wind was slightly stronger here, carrying with it a faint chill that made Isha pull her jacket closer.

Her steps slowed as she reached the exact spot.

Her heartbeat had started rising again.

Not just from fear.

But from something else.

Anticipation.

She stood there for a moment, looking around.

Nothing.

Just an empty road.

A few passing vehicles in the distance.

The same place.

But now—

It felt alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

"This is stupid…" she muttered under her breath.

But even as she said it, she didn't move.

Because something inside her told her to stay.

A sudden gust of wind passed.

The loose wire on the broken pole rattled softly.

And then—

...

Headlights.

Bright.

Blinding.

A loud horn.

The screech of brakes.

A shadow moving quickly.

And a voice—

"Now!"

...

Isha gasped sharply and stumbled backward.

Her hands instinctively moved to her head as a sharp pain shot through it.

Her breathing turned uneven.

"What… what was that…?" she whispered, her voice shaking.

Her vision blurred for a second before clearing again.

The road was normal.

Empty.

Silent.

Like nothing had happened.

But she had seen it.

She knew she had.

"That wasn't a memory…" she said, her voice barely steady.

"I was never here when it happened…"

Her heart pounded harder now.

"If I didn't see it… then how do I know it…?"

Her thoughts stopped abruptly as the realization hit her.

Cold.

Clear.

Terrifying.

"This wasn't an accident…"

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"There was someone else…"

"You… are close…"

The voice came again.

Right next to her ear.

She flinched instantly, turning around.

No one.

Her breathing grew faster.

"Who are you?" she asked, fear and frustration mixing in her voice.

No answer.

Just the wind.

Just the silence.

But this time…

It didn't feel empty.

It felt like something was hiding inside it.

Watching her.

...

By the time she reached home, her body felt drained.

Her head still ached slightly, and her thoughts refused to settle.

But one thing was clear now.

Something was guiding her.

Something that knew more than she did.

And that was more dangerous than anything else.

She walked into her room slowly and stood in front of the mirror.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Pale.

Tired.

Changed.

"This isn't normal…" she whispered.

Her fingers moved slightly as she touched the edge of the table.

"What's happening to me…?"

Silence.

For a moment, she thought it was over again.

That the voice had disappeared.

That maybe it had done its part.

But then—

"Turn… around…"

The whisper came so close that she felt it brush against her ear.

Her entire body froze.

Her heartbeat pounded loudly in her chest.

Slowly…

Very slowly…

She turned.

...

Nothing.

The room was empty.

Exactly the same.

No one.

No shadow.

No movement.

Her breath came out in a shaky exhale.

"I'm losing my mind…" she whispered.

But just as she turned back toward the mirror—

Her phone vibrated on the table.

She looked at it.

Unknown number.

Her fingers hesitated for a second before she picked it up.

A message.

Three words.

Simple.

Cold.

Terrifying.

> "Stop… before it's too late."

Her grip on the phone tightened instantly.

Her heartbeat spiked again.

And in that moment…

Everything inside her went still.

Because this time—

It wasn't just a voice in her head.

Someone else knew.

Someone else was watching.

____ And somewhere in the darkness…

someone smiled…

because the game had finally begun🔥....
