Chapter 6 - Day One of Change

Change doesn't feel powerful in the beginning.

It feels awkward.

Unnatural.

Uncomfortable.

Loid Ainsworth realized that the moment he walked into class the next day.

Nothing had changed.

Same classroom.

Same people.

Same noise.

But his mindset was different.

And that made everything harder.

"Alright," Jay said, leaning over his desk. "Today's the day."

Loid didn't look at him. "…I know."

"Then start."

Simple.

Too simple.

Loid's eyes moved across the room.

Groups forming.

People talking.

Natural conversations flowing like they always did.

And him—

standing at the edge of it.

"…Anyone," Jay reminded him.

Loid exhaled slowly.

Then stood up.

Step one.

His legs felt heavier than usual.

Step two.

His mind started overthinking every possible outcome.

Step three—

"Hey."

The word left his mouth before he could stop it.

A boy near the next desk turned.

Noah Bennett.

"Yeah?" Noah asked casually.

Loid froze.

Just for a second.

But Noah noticed.

"…What's up?"

Loid forced himself to speak.

"Uh… did you understand yesterday's assignment?"

Not smooth.

Not confident.

But not silent either.

Noah shrugged. "Yeah, kinda. Why?"

Loid nodded. "…Same."

A pause.

Awkward.

Then—

"Oh, okay," Noah said, turning back.

Conversation over.

Loid stood there for a second.

Then slowly sat down again.

Jay stared at him.

"…That was painful to watch."

Loid exhaled. "I know."

"But you did it."

Loid looked at him.

Jay smirked. "That's step one."

It didn't feel like progress.

But it was.

Loid knew that.

Even if it didn't feel like it.

The class continued.

This time—

Loid didn't avoid raising his hand.

He hesitated.

Of course he did.

But when the question came—

his hand went up.

Not fast.

Not confidently.

But it went up.

Mr. Harrison noticed.

"Yes, Loid?"

Every eye turned.

That same pressure returned.

But this time—

Loid didn't freeze completely.

He spoke.

"…I think the answer is C."

A pause.

Then—

"Correct," the teacher said.

And something small—

shifted.

No applause.

No reaction.

But no dismissal either.

It was… neutral.

And for now—

that was enough.

From the front of the class—

Charlotte glanced back.

Just for a moment.

Loid noticed.

Of course he did.

But he didn't look away this time.

Not immediately.

Then—

she turned forward again.

Like nothing happened.

But it was something.

Even if it was small.

After class—

Loid didn't rush out.

He stayed.

Waiting.

Not for Charlotte.

For someone else.

Julian Cross.

The topper.

The one who never seemed lost.

Julian packed his books calmly, as always.

"Julian," Loid said.

Julian looked up.

"…Yeah?"

Loid hesitated.

Then—

"Can you help me with studying?"

Straight.

Clear.

No excuses.

Julian studied him for a moment.

Not judging.

Just observing.

"…You're serious?"

"Yes."

A pause.

Then Julian nodded.

"Alright."

That was it.

No big reaction.

No questions.

Just acceptance.

Loid felt something settle inside him.

Not confidence.

Not yet.

But direction.

Jay appeared beside him again.

"…You're moving fast."

Loid shook his head slightly.

"No."

Then, after a second—

"Just finally moving."

Jay smiled.

"…Yeah. I can see that."

As they walked out of the classroom—

Loid didn't look toward Charlotte.

Not because he didn't want to.

But because for the first time—

she wasn't the focus.

He was.

And that—

was new.

And maybe…

that's where everything really started.
