Chapter 114 - Chapter One Hundred Fourteen : The Dream Returns

Chapter One Hundred Fourteen

The Dream Returns

The country house. One month after Lilith told Kat the story. Late summer.

Kat had been sleeping peacefully for weeks.

The first hunger dream—the one at ten months—had faded into memory. Maya had hoped it was a one-time thing. A fluke. A random firing of neurons in a developing brain.

But tonight was different.

"Mama."

Maya woke with a start.

The voice was small. Young. Terrified.

"Mama!"

She ran to Kat's room.

Kat was sitting up in bed, her eyes wide, her hands gripping the blankets. Her face was wet with tears.

"What is it, baby?" Maya lifted her from the bed.

"The dream. The hunger dream. It came back."

"What did you see?"

"A woman. She was old. Her hair was white. Her hands were shaking. She was sitting in a garden, surrounded by flowers."

"That sounds like Grandma Lilith."

"No. It wasn't Grandma Lilith. It was Katerina. The one I'm named after. She was hungry."

Maya's blood went cold.

"What did she do?"

"She reached for me. She said, 'Come here, little one. Let me taste you.' I was scared. I ran. But she kept coming. She kept reaching."

"That was just a dream, baby. She can't hurt you. She's gone."

"She didn't feel gone. She felt real."

---

The living room – The same time.

The family gathered.

Lilith. David. Marcus. Eleanor. The younger Katerina. Sam. All of them. All of her village.

Kat sat on Maya's lap, her face buried in her mother's chest.

"Tell us about the dream," Lilith said.

"There was a woman. Old. White hair. Shaking hands. She was in a garden."

"Katerina's garden."

"Yes. She reached for me. She said, 'Come here, little one. Let me taste you.'"

The younger Katerina gasped.

"That's what she used to say. To me. When I was young. When she was hungry."

"Is she still hungry?" Maya asked.

"No. She changed. She learned to give instead of take. To love instead of consume. To live instead of just exist."

"Then why is she reaching for Kat?"

"Because the hunger doesn't die. It lingers. It echoes. It passes from one generation to the next."

"What do we do?"

"We help her. Like we helped you. Like Katerina helped me. We teach her that hunger is not a curse. It's a gift. A terrible, beautiful, dangerous gift. But a gift nonetheless."

---

The circle – The living room. Afternoon.

The family formed a circle.

Lilith. David. Marcus. Eleanor. The younger Katerina. Sam. Maya. Leo.

Kat sat in the center.

"Close your eyes," Lilith said.

Kat closed them.

"Breathe."

She breathed.

"Feel the hunger. It is small now. But it will grow. And when it grows, you must remember what I taught you."

"What?"

"The hunger is not a curse. It is a gift. A terrible, beautiful, dangerous gift. But a gift nonetheless."

"I'm scared."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

"What do I do with the fear?"

"You breathe. You feel it. You let it wash over you and through you and past you. And then you choose."

"Choose what?"

"Choose love. Choose touch. Choose connection. The hunger will whisper. But you are stronger than it. You have always been stronger. You will always be stronger."

Kat opened her eyes.

"I love you, Grandma Lilith."

"I love you too, little one."

---

The garden – Evening.

Maya walked among the flowers.

Kat was in her arms, her eyes drooping, her mouth curved in a small smile.

"Maya."

She turned.

Lilith stood at the edge of the garden.

"How do you feel?" Lilith asked.

"Different."

"Different how?"

"Different because I'm not scared anymore. Different because I trust her. Different because I trust myself. Different because I think she's going to be okay."

"That's growth."

"It's terrifying."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

Lilith walked to her.

Looked at Kat.

"She has your eyes."

"And Katerina's hunger."

"She's going to need it."

"I know."

Lilith touched Kat's face.

"You are loved, little Katerina. You are wanted. You are enough. And when the hunger whispers—and it will whisper—you will remember who you are. Not a monster. A woman. A woman who chooses. A woman who loves. A woman who lives."

Kat opened her eyes.

"I love you, Grandma Lilith."

"I love you too, little one."

---

The porch – Night.

Maya sat on the porch swing.

Leo sat beside her. Kat slept in his arms.

The stars were bright. The moon was full. The world was quiet.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Different."

"Different how?"

"Different because I'm not afraid anymore. Different because I trust her. Different because I trust myself. Different because I think she's going to be okay."

"That's growth."

"It's terrifying."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

She leaned into him.

He put his arm around her.

"I love you," she said.

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Maya. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

She kissed him.

"I love you too."

The stars shone.

The moon glowed.

And Maya—the daughter of former servants, the granddaughter of a former goddess, the mother of a new generation—sat on the porch swing, held by the man she loved, her daughter in his arms, and felt something she had never felt before.

Courage.
