Chapter 105 - Chapter One Hundred Five : The Birth

Chapter One Hundred Five

The Birth

The country house. Seven months into Maya's pregnancy. Late winter.

The contractions started at dawn.

Maya woke with a gasp, her hands flying to her belly, her body clenched in a vice of pain and need. The hunger surged—not the soft hunger of the past months, but the old hunger. The one that tasted like honey and smoke. The one that demanded to be fed.

"Leo," she gasped.

He was awake instantly.

"What is it?"

"The baby. It's time."

"I'll get Lilith."

"No. Stay. Please. I'm scared."

He held her.

"I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."

"The hunger. It's back. It's so strong."

"Fight it. You're stronger than it. You've always been stronger."

"What if I'm not?"

"Then we'll fight it together."

---

The bedroom – Morning.

The family gathered.

Lilith. David. Marcus. Eleanor. The younger Katerina. Sam. Delia. Morrison. Irene. All of them. All of her village.

Maya lay in bed, her body drenched in sweat, her hands gripping Leo's.

"The hunger is getting worse," she said.

"What does it feel like?" Lilith asked.

"Like I'm starving. Like I haven't eaten in weeks. Like I would do anything to feel someone's desire on my tongue."

"That's the hunger. Not you."

"It feels like me. It feels like all of me."

Lilith knelt beside the bed.

"Maya, look at me."

Maya looked.

"The hunger is not you. It is a test. A test of who you are. A test of who you want to be. A test of who you can become."

"What if I fail the test?"

"Then you try again. And again. And again. That's what mothers do."

"I'm scared."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

---

The contraction – The same time.

Another wave of pain.

Maya screamed.

The hunger surged—red and pulsing and needy.

"I need to feed," she gasped.

"No," Lilith said.

"I can't control it."

"Yes, you can. Remember the circle. Remember the energy. Remember how to feed without consuming."

"I can't. It's too strong."

"Then let us help you."

Lilith looked at the family.

"Form a circle. Hold hands. Pour your energy into her."

They formed a circle.

Marcus and Eleanor. David and Lilith. The younger Katerina and Sam. Delia and Morrison. Irene and Patel. All of them. All of her village.

"Close your eyes," Lilith said.

They closed them.

"Breathe."

They breathed.

"Feel the energy in the room. The love. The connection."

They felt it.

"Now send it to Maya. Not taking. Giving. Let it fill the places where the hunger lives."

They sent it.

The energy flowed into Maya—warm and golden and life-giving.

The hunger quieted.

Not gone. But softer.

"How do you feel?" Lilith asked.

"Full."

"Full how?"

"Full like I've been fed. Not consumed. Nourished."

"Good. Now push."

---

The birth – The same time.

Maya pushed.

The pain was blinding. The hunger surged again—but the energy held it back.

"I see the head," Eleanor said.

"Keep pushing."

Maya pushed.

"One more."

She pushed.

The baby cried.

A girl. Small. Perfect. Hungry.

"She's beautiful," Leo whispered.

"She's hungry," Maya said.

"What do you mean?"

"I can feel it. The hunger. It's in her. Like it was in me. Like it was in Lilith. Like it was in Katerina."

"Then we'll teach her. Like Lilith taught you. Like Katerina taught Lilith. We'll show her that hunger is not a curse. It's a gift. A terrible, beautiful, dangerous gift. But a gift nonetheless."

"I'm scared."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

He kissed her.

"I love you."

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Leo. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

She kissed him.

"I love you too."

---

The naming – The living room. Afternoon.

The family gathered.

Maya sat on the couch, the baby in her arms. Leo sat beside her.

"What are you going to name her?" Lilith asked.

"Katerina," Maya said. "After the original. After the one who started everything. After the one who changed."

"She would be honored."

"I hope so."

Lilith touched the baby's face.

"Hello, Katerina. Welcome to the world. You are loved. You are wanted. You are enough."

The baby cooed.

Everyone laughed.

And Maya—the daughter of former servants, the granddaughter of a former goddess, the mother of a new generation—felt something she had never felt before.

Completion.

---

The bedroom – Night.

Maya lay in bed.

The baby slept in a bassinet beside her. Leo lay beside her.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Different."

"Different how?"

"Different because I'm not hungry anymore. Different because I'm full. Different because I have a daughter."

"That's growth."

"It's terrifying."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

He kissed her.

"I love you."

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Leo. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

She kissed him.

"I love you too."

---

The garden – The next morning.

Maya walked among the flowers.

The baby was in a sling against her chest. The roses were blooming. The lavender was fragrant. The honeysuckle was climbing the trellis. Snow was melting—spring was coming.

"Maya."

She turned.

Lilith stood at the edge of the garden.

"How do you feel?" Lilith asked.

"Different."

"Different how?"

"Different because I'm not alone anymore. Different because I have a daughter. Different because I have a future."

"That's growth."

"It's terrifying."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

Lilith walked to her.

Looked at the baby.

"She has your eyes."

"And Leo's stubbornness."

"She's going to need it."

"I know."

Lilith touched the baby's face.

"Hello, little Katerina. You have a long road ahead. But you are not alone. You have your mother. Your father. Your grandparents. Your village."

"We will teach you. We will guide you. We will love you."

"And when the hunger whispers, you will remember who you are. Not a monster. A woman. A woman who chooses. A woman who loves. A woman who lives."

The baby cooed.

Maya wept.

Lilith held her.

"I love you," Maya said.

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Maya. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

Maya kissed her cheek.

"I love you too."

---

The porch – Evening.

Maya sat on the porch swing.

Leo sat beside her. The baby slept in her arms.

The sun was setting. The sky was orange and pink and purple. The world was beautiful.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Different."

"Different how?"

"Different because I'm not afraid anymore. Different because I trust you. Different because I trust myself. Different because I think I can actually do this."

"That's growth."

"It's terrifying."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

She leaned into him.

He put his arm around her.

"I love you," she said.

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Maya. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

She kissed him.

"I love you too."

The sun set.

The stars came out.

And Maya—the daughter of former servants, the granddaughter of a former goddess, the mother of a new generation—sat on the porch swing, held by the man she loved, her daughter in her arms, and felt something she had never felt before.

Joy.
