Chapter 102 - Chapter One Hundred Two : The Decision

Chapter One Hundred Two

The Decision

The country house. One month after Maya and Leo's conversation. Evening.

The family gathered for dinner.

The table was long. Food covered every surface—dishes that Lilith had learned to cook, recipes she had collected from every corner of the world. The children ran around the table. The adults talked and ate and remembered.

But tonight, Maya had something to say.

"Everyone," she said, standing. "I have an announcement."

The table went quiet.

"Leo and I have decided to try for a baby."

---

The reaction – Silence.

Then—

"What?" Eleanor said.

"A baby?" Marcus said.

"You're so young," Delia said.

"You're never too young," Morrison said.

"Are you sure?" Priya said.

"Are you ready?" Cole said.

Maya laughed.

"We're not sure. We're not ready. But we want to try. And we wanted you to know."

Lilith stood.

Walked to Maya.

Took her hands.

"I'm proud of you," she said. "Not because you're having a baby. Because you're choosing. Choosing love. Choosing family. Choosing hope."

"Thank you, Grandma Lilith."

"You will be a wonderful mother."

"How do you know?"

"Because I've watched you. Because I've seen you grow. Because I've seen you choose love over hunger. Every day. Every hour. Every time the old need whispers."

Maya wept.

Lilith held her.

---

The advice – Lilith.

Later, they sat in the living room.

The fire crackled. The wine was open. The world was quiet.

"Can I give you some advice?" Lilith asked.

"Yes."

"Don't try to be perfect. Perfect mothers don't exist. Good mothers do. Mothers who try. Mothers who learn. Mothers who love."

"What about the hunger? What if I pass it on?"

"Then you'll teach them. Like I taught you. Like Katerina taught me. You'll show them that hunger is not a curse. It's a gift. A terrible, beautiful, dangerous gift. But a gift nonetheless."

"What if I fail?"

"Then you'll try again. And again. And again. That's what mothers do."

Maya hugged her.

"I love you, Grandma Lilith."

"I love you too, little one."

---

The advice – Eleanor.

Eleanor sat beside Maya on the couch.

"Can I give you some advice?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Sleep when the baby sleeps. Everyone says it. No one does it. But try. You'll need it."

"What about Leo? How do I keep him involved?"

"You let him. You don't take over. You don't assume you know better. You trust him."

"That's hard."

"Yes. But it's worth it."

Maya hugged her.

"I love you, Mom."

"I love you too, sweetheart."

---

The advice – Marcus.

Marcus sat on Maya's other side.

"Can I give you some advice?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Don't forget about each other. The baby will take everything. Your time. Your energy. Your sleep. But don't forget that you were a couple before you were parents."

"How do we do that?"

"Date nights. Even if it's just sitting on the couch. Even if it's just holding hands. Even if it's just remembering."

"That's beautiful."

"It's true."

Maya hugged him.

"I love you, Dad."

"I love you too, sweetheart."

---

The advice – The younger Katerina.

The younger Katerina sat in the corner, her scars soft in the firelight.

"Can I give you some advice?" she asked.

"Yes."

"The hunger will whisper. When you're tired. When you're scared. When you're alone. It will tell you that feeding would be easier. That taking would be simpler. That consuming would be safer than loving."

"What do I do?"

"You remember who you are. Not a monster. A mother. A woman who chose love over hunger. Every day. Every hour. Every time the old need whispers."

"That's beautiful."

"It's true."

Maya hugged her.

"I love you, Aunt Katerina."

"I love you too, little one."

---

The advice – Sam.

Sam sat beside the younger Katerina.

"Can I give you some advice?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Don't forget to ask for help. You don't have to do this alone. You have all of us. Your parents. Leo's parents. Lilith. Everyone."

"I don't want to be a burden."

"You're not a burden. You're family. And family helps each other."

"That's beautiful."

"It's true."

Maya hugged her.

"I love you, Aunt Sam."

"I love you too, little one."

---

The advice – Delia and Morrison.

Delia and Morrison sat together, holding hands.

"Can we give you some advice?" Delia asked.

"Yes."

"Don't forget to laugh. Parenthood is hard. It's exhausting. It's terrifying. But it's also hilarious. The things they say. The things they do. The things they destroy."

"Like what?"

"Like the time Morrison tried to change a diaper and the baby peed in his face."

"I thought we agreed never to talk about that."

"We agreed no such thing."

Everyone laughed.

Maya hugged them both.

"I love you, Aunt Delia. I love you, Uncle Morrison."

"We love you too, little one."

---

The bedroom – Night.

Maya and Leo lay in bed.

The candles were low. The world was quiet.

"How do you feel?" Leo asked.

"Different."

"Different how?"

"Different because I'm not scared anymore. Different because I trust you. Different because I trust myself. Different because I think we can actually do this."

"That's growth."

"It's terrifying."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

He kissed her.

"I love you."

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Leo. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

She kissed him.

"I love you too."

---

They made love slowly.

Not desperate. Not tender. Hopeful.

Leo entered her.

"Like this?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Faster?"

"No. Slower."

"Slower?"

"Yes. I want to feel every inch. Every breath. Every heartbeat. I want to remember this. I want to savor this. I want to make this last."

He slowed.

They moved together—not to reach a climax, but to connect. To be present. To create.

She came around him.

A sigh. A tear. A kiss.

He came inside her.

A groan. A smile. A promise.

They lay tangled in the sheets, the candles burning low, the world quiet.

"That was perfect," she said.

"It always is."

"Don't get cocky."

He laughed.

"I love you, Maya."

"I love you too, Leo."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

She kissed him.

"I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you."

He held her.

And they dreamed of the future.
