Chapter 94 - Chapter Ninety-Four : The Goodbye

Chapter Ninety-Four

The Goodbye

The original Katerina's bedroom. The night she died. Her perspective.

She had been dying for a long time.

Not in the way humans die—quickly, suddenly, without warning. She had been dying for centuries, slowly, piece by piece, each feeding taking something she could never get back. But she had not noticed. The hunger had been too loud. The need had been too strong.

Now the hunger was quiet.

And she could finally hear herself think.

"Katerina."

Lilith's voice. Soft. Tender. Loving.

"I'm here."

"I know."

"Are you in pain?"

"No. Just... tired."

"Tired of what?"

"Tired of being hungry. Tired of being afraid. Tired of being alone."

"You're not alone. I'm here. We're all here."

"I know. That's why I'm not afraid."

---

She closed her eyes.

The room faded.

And she was somewhere else.

---

A village. A long time ago. Before the hunger. Before the hunt. Before the emptiness.

She was young. Her hair was dark. Her hands were smooth. Her heart was full.

"Katerina!"

A child's voice. Her daughter. Sofia.

"Mama, come see! The flowers are blooming!"

She walked to the garden.

The flowers were everywhere—roses, lavender, honeysuckle. The colors were bright. The smells were sweet. The world was beautiful.

"They're beautiful," she said.

"Like you, Mama."

"You're sweet."

"I love you, Mama."

"I love you too, little one."

She held her daughter.

The sun was warm. The birds were singing. The world was peaceful.

And then the priests came.

---

The bedroom. The present.

"Katerina."

Lilith's voice. Pulling her back.

"Where did you go?"

"To the beginning. Before the hunger. Before the priests. Before I became a monster."

"What was it like?"

"Beautiful. Peaceful. Full."

"What happened?"

"The priests happened. They took my daughter. They burned my village. They carved the hunger into my flesh."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. It wasn't your fault."

"I know. But I'm sorry anyway."

---

She closed her eyes again.

The room faded.

And she was somewhere else.

---

A temple. Dark. Cold. Hungry.

She was on her knees. Priests surrounded her. Their hands were on her body—carving, cutting, blessing.

"You will be the hunter," they said. "You will find the goddess. You will destroy her. You will feed."

"I don't want to feed."

"You don't have a choice."

They carved the symbols into her flesh.

The hunger entered her.

And Katerina—the mother, the healer, the woman who had loved her daughter—ceased to exist.

In her place was something else.

A hunter.

A weapon.

A hunger.

---

The bedroom. The present.

"Katerina."

Lilith's voice. Gentle. Grounding.

"Where did you go?"

"To the temple. To the beginning of the hunger."

"What was it like?"

"Dark. Cold. Empty."

"Are you still there?"

"No. I'm here. With you."

"Good. Stay with me."

"I'm trying."

---

She opened her eyes.

Lilith was beside her. The younger Katerina was beside her. Sam was beside her. David was beside her. All the people she had hurt. All the people she had loved.

"I'm sorry," she said.

"For what?" Lilith asked.

"For everything. For making you. For leaving you. For not teaching you how to live."

"You taught me how to survive. I taught myself how to live."

"That's beautiful."

"It's true."

---

She closed her eyes again.

The room faded.

And she was somewhere else.

---

A garden. Flowers everywhere. Roses, lavender, honeysuckle.

Lilith was there. The younger Katerina was there. Sam was there. David was there. All the people she had hurt. All the people she had loved.

"Is this real?" she asked.

"It's whatever you want it to be," Lilith said.

"I want it to be real."

"Then it's real."

They walked among the flowers.

The sun was warm. The birds were singing. The world was peaceful.

"I love you," she said.

"We know," Lilith said.

"Say it back."

"We love you, Katerina. We love you. We love you. We love you."

"Again."

"We love you."

"Again."

She wept.

They held her.

And Katerina—the first hunger, the mother of monsters, the woman who had started everything—felt something she had never felt before.

Peace.

---

The bedroom. The final moment.

"Katerina."

Lilith's voice. Soft. Fading.

"I'm here."

"Are you ready?"

"Yes."

"Are you scared?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm not hungry anymore. Because I'm not alone anymore. Because I'm loved."

"You are loved."

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Lilith. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

She reached out.

Touched Lilith's face.

"Thank you," she said.

"For what?"

"For forgiving me. For staying. For loving me."

"Thank you for changing. For becoming someone worth loving."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

Katerina closed her eyes.

And let herself go.

---

The garden. After.

She was walking among the flowers.

Roses, lavender, honeysuckle. The sun was warm. The birds were singing. The world was beautiful.

"Mama!"

She turned.

A child was running toward her. Dark hair. Dark eyes. A smile that made her heart burst.

"Sofia."

"Mama, you came back!"

"I never left, little one. I was just... hungry. But I'm not hungry anymore."

"Will you stay?"

"Forever."

She held her daughter.

The sun was warm. The birds were singing. The world was peaceful.

And Katerina—the first hunger, the mother of monsters, the woman who had started everything—was finally home.
