The clinking of cutlery was the only sound left in the dining hall. Breakfast had just ended, but no one made an attempt to leave.
Elena sat still, her posture was straight and her expression remained composed. The strange calm granted by the system still lingered faintly within her, dulling the edges of her thoughts.
No one spoke. Not like they had any permission or a reason to do so.
At the head of the table, Regulus Vanderborne set his utensils down with quiet precision. That alone was enough.
Every gaze shifted subtly, carefully toward him. "You will introduce yourselves." he said.
His voice was calm. Completely effortless but there was finality in his tone.
A pause followed.
That seemed to be happening a lot lately. It felt as if the room itself needed time to process the command. Elena thought.
"Starting from the left." Regulus said.
Elena's eyes flickered slightly. She wasn't the first. That was good. She let out a sigh of relief.
The girl seated at the far left straightened almost immediately. She was calm, composed and looked completely elegant. Elena couldn't help but feel jealous of her fellow woman. That aura wasn't something that could easily be acquired.
The young Lady must have put in a ton of effort. Elena thought.
She placed her hands neatly on her lap before speaking.
"My name is Alice Nirvana, daughter of Viscount Nirvana."
Her voice was smooth, almost melodic. Her smile was gentle and perfectly measured.
"I am honored to be invited here, Your Excellency."
She lowered her gaze briefly. Everything about her felt… practiced. It felt perfect because it didn't look forced at all.
Elena watched her carefully. There was no hesitation or wasted movement to be seen. Even her breathing seemed controlled. She's dangerous, Elena thought.
Not because she stood out but because she didn't need to. Alice lifted her gaze again.
For a brief moment, her eyes met the Duke's. Then she looked away as if that alone was enough to captivate his heart.
Next.
A chair shifted slightly.
"My name is Rubella Gray, daughter of Baron Gray."
Her tone was much brighter. It was warmer, more cheerful. It felt like being welcomed by spring. And yet there was a faint sharpness beneath it.
"I'm very grateful to be here."
She smiled, a little wider than necessary.
Her fingers tapped lightly against the table once before going stil.
Elena noticed this. It wasn't nervousness per se but it didn't feel like she was restraining herself either.
Rubella glanced toward the Duke. She held the look for a second too long. Then she smiled again, this time softer than before. As if to correct the previous one.
Next.
A pause.
Yep, those pauses were dangerously always close by. Elena she might get a headache if this continued but after remembering her earlier predicament. She suddenly didn't mind the pauses after all.
Then, "My name is Anastasia Grant." Her voice was quiet. It was barely audible.
"Daughter of Count Grant."
That was all she said. Adding nothing else. No smile. No extra words. Her posture remained straight, but relaxed. It was strangely … detached.
Elena's gaze lingered on her. The Silent Watcher. There was no tension in her. It was like she existed slightly outside of everything happening.
Anastasia lifted her eyes. And for a brief moment their eyes met. They were still and unmoving. Yet, she looked away first. Elena felt something tighten in her chest.
"My name is Alya Vermont."
The next voice was soft. It was… Gentle.
"I am the daughter of Marquis Vermont." She gave a small, polite smile.
"I hope we can all get along during our stay." Her words were simple, honest and would have been out of place if the room didn't already have a lot of unique… characters.
Elena studied her for a moment. There was no pressure behind her tone. Just… warmth but somehow, that made her harder to read.
Elena felt it. It was her turn. She closed her eyes and inhaled slowly. Then exhaled before standing up.
"My name is Elena Valendis, daughter of Viscount Valendis." Her voice came out steady.
"I am grateful for this opportunity, Your Excellency." She kept it short.
As she lifted her gaze, her eyes met his just for a fraction of a second.
"| Passive Progress Detected |"
Elena's fingers twitched slightly beneath the table.
Not now…
"| New Task Generated |"
Her pulse quickened.
"| Objective: Maintain the Duke's attention for 5 seconds |"
"| Condition: Direct engagement |"
"| Reward: Insight |"
"| Failure: Penalty |"
Elena kept her expression neutral.
Direct engagement…?. She couldn't just stare again. She wasn't stupid. That would be too obvious.
Her gaze lowered slightly, as if in thought.
Then she spoke.
"Your Excellency."
The room shifted slightly yet everyone noticed. Elena continued, her tone was calm. Completely free as if she had rehearsed her next words ten thousand times.
"You mentioned that we are free to act as we wish. Does that include… approaching you directly?"
Silence. Every girl at the table was now paying attention. Even Alya. Regulus looked at Elena properly for the first time.
"Yes." The answer was simple but the weight behind it settled heavily.
Elena held his gaze. One second. Two. Three. Four. Five.
"| Task Complete |"
"| Reward Granted: Insight |"
Something shifted inside her. It didn't grant her any hidden information. Just a feeling. A feeling that felt like she was noticing a pattern she hadn't seen before.
Regulus looked away first. "Do not waste the opportunity." That was all he added.
It felt like a warning. Clearly failing to erase the tension. Instead it deepened it further
Rubella's fingers stilled completely now but Alice's smile remained unchanged. Though her eyes flickered ever so slightly towards Elena.
Anastasia didn't move or react. Alya glanced between them, her expression soft, but thoughtful.
No one spoke after that.
The introductions were over but something else had begun.
Elena lowered her gaze to her plate. As her mind replayed the moment.
She had gained insight. Not through a voice or the system just a realization that Regulus didn't respond to words. He responded to intent, presence and control.
Her fingers tightened slightly. She was beginning to understand the game. She looked up again. This time more carefully than the last.
Regulus wasn't looking somewhere else. He wasn't even pretending to. He was watching them.
Elena felt it then and there that, this wasn't a selection but an observation. And they were already being judged.
