Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF A RESOURCE

The port of Dead Ledger smelled like everything Caelum had forgotten. He smelled bread, tar, human sweat and cheap spices. It was all so familiar. It felt like a lifetime ago that he had last experienced these smells. The port of Dead Ledger was a place that brought back a lot of memories for Caelum.

Walking along the dock felt like a wake-up call. It was like being slapped into reality. People passed by him busy with their problems. For the time in a year Caelum did not feel like a resource on a list but something worse. He felt like a stranger in a world that had not stopped for him. The port of Dead Ledger was a place and Caelum felt out of place.

Nami and Carina walked a steps ahead of him. They moved with an ease that he envied. They stopped in front of an alley that led to the back of a supply warehouse. Nami said to him "Listen, Thunder-Beard you go around back and make a scene. I need the guards distracted." Caelum looked at the place the port of Dead Ledger. Saw guards at the entrance reinforced windows and busy streets.

He shook his head. " Idea " he said. "If I make noise it will not just be the guards. The whole dock will come down on us." Nami turned slightly looking annoyed. Caelum kept going "Get me up to that ledge " he said, pointing at a window. "I can open it quietly. You go in I watch." The port of Dead Ledger was not a place to take risks. Caelum knew that.

There was a pause. Then Carina said, " noise, fewer problems. It makes sense." Nami did not answer,. She did not argue either. That was enough. Caelum climbed with controlled effort. His muscles responded better than before. The fatigue was still there hidden beneath his skin. Caelum, Nami and Carina were a team. They had to work together.

At the window he placed his hands on the iron bolts. He focused, using the heat to soften the metal. The metal became malleable under his hands. There was a creak. Caelum froze. He heard footsteps. A guard passed below muttering to himself. The guard kept walking. Caelum exhaled slowly. He finished the job. The window came loose. Nami and Carina slipped inside like shadows. From the ledge Caelum kept watch. He listened to the wind, voices and the flow of people. Everything was different. His mind worked the same. He was organizing, evaluating and preparing.

For a moment he almost felt in control. An hour later they were in a rented room above a tavern. The loot was medicine, clothes, coins. Carina counted the money quickly. Nami studied a map. She tossed a package and a razor toward Caelum. "It worked " she said, without looking at him. Caelum, Nami and Carina had done it they had survived another day.

Caelum moved to a basin. He heated the water enough. Steam rose slowly. He looked at his reflection. For a moment he hesitated. The face he saw was not the one from the island. It was not the one from the office either. He started shaving. Each stroke erased months of neglect. The beard the salt was gone. The image changed. Caelum was changing he was becoming a person.

When he finished he stared a seconds longer. He did not smile he just accepted it. He put on the clothes: a linen shirt and dark trousers. He felt lighter more functional. Carina said from the bed "Turns out you were human along." Caelum adjusted his belt without answering. He packed his tools then he spoke. "The raft stays " he said. "It's useless for what comes " Nami looked up. "What exactly comes next?" Caelum met her gaze. "A real ship " he said. "Better decisions."

Nami watched him in silence, measuring and evaluating. "We're not friends " she said at last. "Perfect " Caelum replied. He sat across from her looking at the map. "The best arrangements are the ones that benefit everyone involved." Caelum, Nami and Carina were not friends. They were partners.

The air in the room shifted. It was not trust something useful: balance. For the time since arriving in this world Caelum was not just surviving. He was participating. Nami adjusted the sail without looking at him. "Somewhere money matters more than the law " she said. Her eyes flicked toward him for a second. "Get some rest Caelum. Tomorrow you're going to work." Caelum closed his eyes. His body still felt heavy his energy unstable. He was 27 years old in the middle of the sea with two 17-year- girls who clearly understood this world better than he did.

He had just accepted, without realizing it his job outside everything he once knew. Monday no longer existed. Now there was survival. Caelum, Nami and Carina were all, in this together now. They were going to have to rely on each other if they wanted to make it. Caelum was ready to do that. He was ready to start his life and see where it would take him. Caelum, Nami and Carina were ready to face whatever came next.
