Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 – The Distance That Disappeared

As the first light of dawn fell over the forest, the air was still cold.

The Centaur lay collapsed on the ground. His breath was uneven, his body weak… but his eyes were still open.

As if closing them meant never opening them again.

The Beast was kneeling beside him.

He wasn't moving.

But for the first time… he wasn't running away either.

His fingers rested on the Centaur's shoulder.

Not quite holding. Not quite letting go.

Somewhere in between.

"Can you hear me?" the Beast said.

He tried to make his voice sharp, but there was a crack underneath it.

The Centaur slowly opened his eyes halfway.

"Barely… I can."

The Beast swallowed.

That answer scared him more than anything.

"I'm waiting for you to tell me to leave," he said.

The Centaur let out a short breath. Almost like a painful smile.

"Telling you to leave… never worked before."

Silence.

Even the wind seemed to retreat.

The Beast leaned in a little closer.

Not like an attack this time… but like a refuge.

"Are you going to die?" he asked.

Even the question felt heavy.

The Centaur closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

That honesty… left the Beast helpless for the first time.

A moment later, the Beast grabbed his arm.

Not harsh this time.

But not gentle either.

Uncontrolled… yet certain.

"I won't let you do this," he said.

The Centaur opened his eyes again.

Tired gaze.

"Let… me?"

For the first time, the Beast raised his voice.

"Yes. I won't let you."

Then he fell silent.

As if even he was hearing his own words for the first time.

The Centaur slowly turned his head.

His eyes locked onto the Beast's face.

"You don't control me anymore," he said.

The Beast's hand trembled slightly.

But he didn't let go.

"I don't control you," he said more quietly.

"I just… don't lose."

That sentence stopped the Centaur.

He stared for a long time.

Then spoke very slowly:

"You never had control over losing me."

The Beast's breath tightened.

He stepped closer.

Now there was no distance.

Only two broken beings.

"Don't go," he said.

It was no longer an order.

It was collapse.

The Centaur turned his head slightly.

And for the first time, the Beast saw him this close.

Worn.

Pale.

But still… alive.

"You're losing me by holding on," the Centaur said.

The Beast's grip tightened.

"If I don't hold on, you'll leave."

The Centaur closed his eyes.

"Maybe I should."

That sentence… broke something inside the Beast.

But he didn't let go.

Instead, he pulled the Centaur closer.

It was sudden.

But not violence—fear.

The Centaur staggered.

The space between them disappeared completely.

Their breaths mixed.

"Don't do this," the Centaur said softly.

The Beast didn't answer.

He just looked.

For a very long time.

Then whispered:

"What will I become when you're gone?"

The Centaur's voice was almost gone:

"You'll stay."

The Beast shook his head.

"I don't know how to stay."

That sentence hung between them.

Then the Centaur spoke very slowly:

"You have to learn how to let me go."

The Beast let out a broken laugh.

"If I let go… everything inside me collapses."

The Centaur opened his eyes.

For the first time, they were clear.

"You're already collapsing."

Silence.

No escape this time.

The Beast placed his hand on the Centaur's chest.

He could feel his heartbeat.

Weak. But real.

"Don't go," he said again.

This time softer.

Closer.

More… dangerous.

The Centaur whispered:

"This isn't love."

The Beast's fingers tightened slightly.

"What is it then?"

The Centaur didn't answer.

Because he knew.

But he didn't want to say it.

The Beast leaned closer.

Now their breaths collided.

"Look at me," he said.

The Centaur did.

And in that moment…

nothing was romantic.

Nothing was safe.

Only two broken beings existed.

Too close to each other.

The Beast whispered:

"If I don't let you go… will you hate me?"

The Centaur stayed silent for a long time.

Then:

"We're already hurting each other."

The Beast's hand trembled.

But he didn't pull away.

He only moved closer.

"I don't know how to fix this," he said.

The Centaur closed his eyes.

"Neither do I."

And for the first time…

there was no solution between them.

Only existence.

Heavy as night.

Close as breath.

And as dangerous as a bond that can never return the same.
